Almost every Kashmir plan has the same question in the middle of it. You have three famous hill destinations, you have only so many days, and each one is a long day out from Srinagar. This guide, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, compares them honestly: what each is really like, who it suits, which season suits each one and which to drop if you must. It describes the usual pattern of each place, not a forecast, so we confirm roads and seasons for your dates before you book.

When is Gulmarg the right choice?
Choose Gulmarg when you want open space, big views and, in winter, snow. The gondola is the headline, with Phase 1 taking you to Kongdoori. The meadows are a place to walk, ride and sit. In winter Gulmarg is Kashmir's snow destination, with skiing, sledging and other snow activities. It is also the shortest drive of the three, so it is the easiest to fit into a short trip.
- Tickets for the gondola are bought separately, and the lift can stop for weather or maintenance. See our gondola page.
- In winter the Tangmarg road can need anti-skid chains or a local vehicle when it snows, and snow cannot be promised for any date. See snowfall in Gulmarg.
- Activities include skiing, an ATV ride and walks. See our ski packages, ATV ride and skiing guide.
- The full picture is in our Gulmarg guide.
When is Pahalgam the right choice?
Choose Pahalgam when you want a river valley, gentle walking and several short outings in one place. The Lidder runs through the town, and the surrounding valleys give you choices: Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, with ponies to the Baisaran meadow. It is the most relaxed of the three, which is why families and older travellers often prefer it. In the rafting season, the river itself is an activity.
- Local outings are paid directly, and our packages list them as extras.
- A night in Pahalgam is worth it on longer trips, because it splits the long drive and gives you the river in the evening.
- See our Pahalgam travel guide, Pahalgam itinerary, Aru Valley guide and rafting page.
When is Sonmarg the right choice?
Choose Sonmarg when you want a glacier day and the feel of the high Himalaya. The road follows the Sindh river, the meadow opens at the end, and a pony ride or walk takes you to Thajiwas Glacier, where snow stays through the year. Sonmarg is also where the road to Ladakh begins, so it is the natural taste of the north. The cost is the longest drive of the three, so we usually pair it with an easy day before and after.
- It suits late spring to early autumn. In heavy snow it can be hard to reach.
- Pony fees to the glacier are paid directly, and we suggest agreeing the price before you start.
- See our Sonmarg guide and Srinagar to Sonmarg taxi page. If the road to Leh interests you, read our Srinagar to Leh road guide.
Sonmarg vs Gulmarg for families: which is easier?
| Question | Gulmarg | Sonmarg | Pahalgam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive with children | About 1.5 hours; the shortest | About 3 hours; the longest | About 2 to 3 hours |
| Things children enjoy | The gondola ride, snow play in winter, meadow space | Pony ride, glacier snow, riverside stones | Ponies, riverside play, short walks |
| Cold and wind | Strong, especially at the top | Strong at the glacier | Moderate |
| Altitude | Higher, with cold air | Higher, with cold air | Lower |
| Our suggestion | A good half-day with warm clothes | A full day only for older children | The easiest base for a mixed-age group |
For families with toddlers, older grandparents or anyone with a heart, lung or blood pressure condition, ask your doctor about altitude and cold before you plan the higher places. Our family tour packages and Kashmir family trip guide cover the details, and we adapt the pace for the ages in your group.
Which suits honeymooners and older travellers?
- Honeymooners: a night in Gulmarg or Pahalgam beats a day trip, because the evenings are the romantic part. See our honeymoon packages.
- Older travellers: Pahalgam, with short outings and a heated hotel. Gulmarg works if the gondola is running and the day is not too cold. Sonmarg is a long day. See our senior citizen packages.
Which one in which season?
| Season | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Pahalgam or Gulmarg | Blossom and green slopes; Sonmarg can still be cold and snowy |
| Summer | Any of the three | All roads and meadows are open, and Sonmarg is at its most accessible |
| Autumn | Pahalgam | Clear air and colour; Sonmarg gets cold quickly |
| Winter | Gulmarg | Snow is possible, not certain; Sonmarg and Pahalgam are cold and depend on the roads |
Snow cannot be promised for any date, and our winter packages page says plainly what we do and do not recommend in the cold months. For the full picture by month, read our month-by-month guide.
How many of the three can you fit in?

Questions travellers ask
Should I choose Gulmarg or Pahalgam for a short trip?
Choose Gulmarg for meadows, the gondola and winter snow, and Pahalgam for a river valley and gentler walks. Gulmarg is a shorter drive. For a three-day trip choose one of them, and for four days do both on separate days.
Is Sonmarg or Gulmarg easier with children?
Gulmarg is the shorter drive, about an hour and a half, and children often enjoy the gondola. Sonmarg is about three hours each way and colder at the glacier. Pahalgam is usually the easiest of all. Dress children in layers and keep each day light.
Can I see Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg in one trip?
Yes, with at least five days, so that each place has its own day. They lie in three different directions from Srinagar, so combining two in one day means most of it is in the car. Our five-day itinerary does all three.
Which of the three has the most snow?
Gulmarg is the usual winter snow destination, and Sonmarg has snow too, but its access depends on the road. Pahalgam sees less. Snow cannot be promised for any date, so choose the season for the experience you want and let us check conditions.
Which one costs the least to visit?
Cost comes from the vehicle, the activities and whether you stay overnight, not from the place alone. In our packages, gondola tickets, ponies and local trips are paid separately. Ask us for the day priced as its own line, and compare what each quote includes.
Which place should a first-time visitor choose?
For most first-timers we suggest Gulmarg or Pahalgam, because the drives are shorter and the days are easier. Add Sonmarg if you have five days or more. The right choice depends on your season, your group and your pace, so tell us and we recommend a plan.
