How do you get to Sonmarg from Srinagar?

The road runs north-east from Srinagar through Kangan and the villages of the Sindh valley, then climbs gently beside the river to the meadow. The distance varies by a few kilometres between sources, and the time depends on traffic, road works and weather, so we give ranges. What is there to do in Sonmarg?

• Walk or ride a pony to Thajiwas Glacier: a few kilometres from the town, over meadow and then stony path. Agree the pony price before you start.
• Sit beside the Sindh river, which runs cold and loud through the valley.
• Look at the high peaks around the meadow, and take photographs in the early light.
• Go on to Zero Point or Zoji La by local cab, if the road is open and the weather is kind.
• Trek to the high lakes: the Kashmir Great Lakes route begins near Sonmarg. See our Great Lakes trek page.
• Combine Sonmarg with Ladakh: it is the last Kashmir stop on the road to Zoji La and Kargil.

Where should you stay in Sonmarg?

Most visitors return to Srinagar the same evening. Stay a night if you want the glacier trail early, a quiet evening by the Sindh river, or a head start on the Ladakh road. Choose between a hotel strip by the river, a lodge nearer the glacier trail, or a summer camp, and check heating, bedding, meals and the walk to the pony stand. How long should you spend in Sonmarg?

Allow one full day from Srinagar. Our distance chart shows that Sonmarg uses most of the day by itself and rarely combines with another sight. A night in Sonmarg splits the drive in two and gives you a longer time on the trail. It is a common choice before the road to Ladakh; see our Srinagar to Leh road trip guide.

What does a one-day plan look like?

1. Leave Srinagar early, with layers and a rain jacket.
2. Reach Sonmarg in about three hours, with a stop by the river on the way.
3. Walk or ride to Thajiwas Glacier and back, with the pony price agreed first.
4. Eat a simple lunch; the menu in the town is short, so carry snacks.
5. Add Zero Point only if the road is confirmed open and time allows.
6. Start back by mid-afternoon so you are in Srinagar before dark.

What should you know about access and safety?

• No special permit is needed for Sonmarg; carry government photo ID. See our permits and ID guide.
• The weather changes quickly. Mist, rain or snow can close trails or the road, and we check the road on the morning of the drive.
• The glacier path can be slippery. Wear shoes with grip and keep children close.
• Altitude is moderate here, but the cold is real. Carry layers even in summer.

Which packages include Sonmarg?

Sonmarg is a day trip on most of our circuits, such as the 4N/5D Kashmir Classic and the 5N/6D Kashmir Explorer. Pony rides to the glacier are paid directly, and lunch is not included, as our meals guide explains.
