- Choosing a base, sizing a day trip and deciding which places not to put in the same day
- How we plan it
- One big excursion a day, an early start and a check of the road on the morning of the drive
Most travellers want to know one thing before they plan a day: how long will it take to get there? This chart, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, lists rough road distances and usual drive times from Srinagar to about twenty places. It is a planning aid, not a measured survey. Sources differ by several kilometres depending on where in Srinagar they start, and the time on the day depends on traffic, weather and road work. Treat the numbers as ranges and let us confirm the drive for your dates.

How far apart are Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg?
They lie in three different directions, so you travel back through the Srinagar area to go from one to the next. That is why the times below are longer than the kilometres suggest.
| From and to | How the road runs | Rough time |
|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg to Pahalgam | Back down through Tangmarg and the Srinagar area, then south through Anantnag | About 3 to 5 hours, depending on the route and traffic |
| Gulmarg to Sonmarg | Back through Srinagar, then north-east along the Sindh river | About 4 to 5 hours |
| Pahalgam to Sonmarg | North through Anantnag and Srinagar, then up the Sindh valley | About 5 to 6 hours |
| Srinagar to any of the three | A day trip out and back | One and a half to three hours each way |
Our package pages give shorter Gulmarg to Pahalgam times than some cab guides do, so we ask the driver for the likely time on your day. See our honeymoon packages page, which notes the difference.
Why does drive time matter more than distance?
- Climbs. The last stretches to Gulmarg, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are slow hill roads, while the Budgam plain before them is fast.
- Town traffic. Pampore, Anantnag, Baramulla and Srinagar itself slow the day, especially in school hours and on market days.
- The pass. Zoji La traffic is held and released in turns, so the time to Dras and Kargil is the least predictable on the chart.
- Weather. Rain, snow, fog and landslides can add hours or close a road for the day.
- Stops. A tea halt at Sonmarg, a photo stop in the saffron fields or a queue for the gondola all add time.
What can you combine in a single day?
| Combination | Works? | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg and the Mughal gardens | Yes, with an early start | Gulmarg in the morning, the gardens late in the afternoon |
| Pahalgam and the saffron fields | Yes, in autumn | Stop in Pampore on the way, then carry on |
| Sonmarg and anything else | Rarely | Sonmarg alone uses most of the day |
| Gulmarg and Pahalgam | No | Different directions; give each its own day |
| Doodhpathri or Yusmarg and anything else | Rarely | Keep the meadow for the late morning and the walk back |
Our own packages follow the same rule: one big excursion a day. The 3N/4D Quick Getaway, for instance, takes Gulmarg and Pahalgam on separate days from a Srinagar base, and the 4N/5D Kashmir Classic adds Sonmarg on a third.
Where should you base yourself?
Srinagar suits most travellers, because every day trip returns to the same bed. Staying in the hills saves a long drive at both ends of the day. Our Gulmarg stay package puts a night near the meadow, our 6N/7D Summer Special puts nights in both Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and our 5N/6D Explorer puts one night in Pahalgam. If you are unsure, our Gulmarg vs Pahalgam vs Sonmarg guide helps you choose.
How do the seasons change the chart?
In winter the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road can need anti-skid chains or a local 4x4 when it snows, and Sonmarg can be hard to reach in heavy snow. The road to Ladakh closes for long spells. In spring and summer the roads open up, but rain, rockfalls and crowds add delays. In monsoon months landslides can close a road for part of a day. Our winter packages page and month-by-month guide say more.
What is the next step?
Tell us which places you want, your dates and your group size through our contact page, and we send a day-by-day plan with drive times that match your season. Our site says a planner replies within 30 minutes. If you want a vehicle for a single day, our Kashmir taxi service page lists the fleet, and we confirm the road on the morning you travel.
Questions travellers ask
How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar?
Roughly 50 to 60 km by road, depending on the source and where you start in Srinagar. Plan on one and a half to two hours each way, longer in snow or heavy traffic. The last climb from Tangmarg is slow, so we advise an early start.
How far is Pahalgam from Srinagar?
About 90 to 95 km, and a drive of two to three hours each way. The road runs through Pampore and Anantnag, and the time depends on town traffic. Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari lie further up the same valley road.
How far is Sonmarg from Srinagar?
About 80 to 87 km, and our itineraries allow about three hours each way. The road follows the Sindh river, and the time depends on traffic and weather. Sonmarg alone usually fills a day, so do not add a second excursion to it.
How far is Srinagar from Leh by road?
About 434 km, which we plan over two days with a night in Kargil, about 204 km from Srinagar. The driving time is around 14 to 16 hours in all, and Zoji La traffic and weather decide the rest. Read our Srinagar to Leh road guide for the stops and the season.
Can I visit Gulmarg and Pahalgam on the same day?
We advise against it. They lie in different directions, so you would drive back through the Srinagar area between them, and the day would be mostly in the car. Give each its own day, or sleep in one of them to save a long drive.
Why do distance websites disagree on these figures?
They start from different points in Srinagar, use different routes and round differently. Mountain roads also change when tunnels open or a slope slips. We give ranges and ask you to plan with the time, not the kilometres. We confirm the likely drive for your dates.
