Let us plan your trip

What is Yusmarg like, and who is it for?

Yusmarg is a meadow on a gentle slope ringed by forest, with walnut and pine scattered across the grass and a mountain stream running past. The name is usually glossed as the meadow of Jesus. It is a place to sit, picnic and walk without a plan, not one to tick sights off. Nobody here is in a hurry, and that is the point.

It suits families with young children, older travellers who want a drive and a picnic, and couples who want a quiet day away from the city. It suits less well those who want a packed programme, a ski slope or a high-altitude view.

How do you get to Yusmarg?

StretchWhat it is likeOur advice
Srinagar to BudgamFlat roads through towns and farmlandLeave by about 8 or 9 am to avoid the morning traffic
Budgam onwardA quieter road through villages and fields, passing the shrine town of Charar-i-ShariefDrive slowly; livestock and local traffic are common
The climb to the meadowA gradual rise through forest, then open grassRain can make the road slippery, so check the weather
ReturnThe same road, downhillLeave by mid-afternoon to be in Srinagar before dusk

Our Srinagar to Yusmarg taxi page covers the vehicles and what the fare depends on, and our Kashmir taxi service page covers the fleet. We confirm the road and the fare for your date before you pay.

What can you do in Yusmarg?

  • Walk the meadow and the paths by the stream. Do the walking first, while the day is cool.
  • Have a picnic on the grass. Bring your own food and water, because stalls on site are basic.
  • Ride a pony. Rides are paid directly to the operator, so agree the price before you mount.
  • Visit the small lake at Nilnag, if conditions and time allow.
  • Take photographs of the wildflowers in season, the forest edge and the light on the slopes.
  • Let children run, within sight and away from the stream edge.

Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, Gulmarg or Sonmarg: which meadow suits you?

MeadowThe feelGood for
YusmargOpen lawns on a gentle slope, with scattered treesAn easy picnic day, children and older parents
DoodhpathriA bowl-shaped valley with a milky stream and denser forestA wilder, quieter day
GulmargA high alpine meadow with a gondola and skiing in winterSnow, the gondola and a full day
SonmargA river valley with glacier views on the road to LadakhMountain scenery and a longer drive

If you have two days, you can do Yusmarg on one and Doodhpathri on the other. We would not combine them in a single day, since most of it would be driving.

Where do you stay near Yusmarg?

Most visitors go for the day and sleep in Srinagar, so a lake or city stay is the usual base. Overnight stays near the meadow are limited and depend on the season, so we do not plan one unless it is confirmed. Our Srinagar hotel booking page and our Dal Lake guide cover the city stays, and we can tell you which suits your group.

When should you go to Yusmarg?

MonthsWhat to expectWhat to weigh
April to JuneFresh grass, cool air and wildflowers beginningA jacket in the morning; showers are possible
July to SeptemberThe greenest weeks and the busiest; picnic seasonWeekend crowds; paths can be muddy after rain
October to NovemberCold, clear days and autumn colourShort days; start early and head back by mid-afternoon
December to MarchSnow and cold; the road may be affectedWe plan a visit only if the road is confirmed that morning

We do not quote opening dates, because conditions change each year. Our month-by-month guide puts these months next to the rest of the valley.

What does a good Yusmarg day look like?

  1. 8 to 9 am: pickup in Srinagar. Buy water and snacks before leaving the city.
  2. Late morning: arrive and walk the meadow and the stream.
  3. Midday: picnic or a simple meal, then a pony ride if you like.
  4. Early afternoon: Nilnag, or more time on the grass.
  5. Mid-afternoon: start back, to reach Srinagar before dusk.

What should you carry, and how do you look after the meadow?

Carry a warm layer, a rain jacket, shoes with grip, water, snacks, a bag for rubbish, small cash for ponies, parking or food, and a power bank, since phone signal can be patchy. Keep to the paths, keep away from the stream edge when it is running high, do not light fires and take every piece of rubbish home. Our packing list has the longer version.

To combine Yusmarg with a wider trip, see our offbeat Kashmir tours page, our hidden gems guide and the Srinagar guide. Send your dates and group size through our contact page, and we confirm the road before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Yusmarg from Srinagar?

Roughly 45 km each way, though published figures differ by a few kilometres. The time is a better guide: about one and a half to two hours on a normal day. Weekends, rain and local traffic can add time, and we confirm the route with the driver on the day.

Is it Yusmarg or Yousmarg?

Both spellings are used for the same meadow in Budgam district. We write Yusmarg on this site, and the page address uses Yousmarg. Whichever spelling you search or tell the driver, a taxi to either goes to the same place.

What is the best time to visit Yusmarg?

Late spring to autumn. April to June is green and fresh, July to September is the greenest and busiest, and October and November are cold and clear. Snow can affect the road in winter. We check conditions for your date and do not promise access.

Is Yusmarg suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes, it is one of the gentler day trips from Srinagar, with open grass and short walks. The drive is a couple of hours each way, so bring snacks, warm layers and a rain jacket. Tell us about any mobility needs and we choose a comfortable vehicle and pace.

Can we stay overnight at Yusmarg?

Most visitors go for the day and return to Srinagar. Overnight stays near the meadow are limited and depend on the season and the road, so we do not plan one unless it is confirmed. Ask us if you want a night, and we check what is available for your dates.

Should I choose Yusmarg or Doodhpathri?

Choose Yusmarg for open lawns, an easier road and a relaxed picnic day, and Doodhpathri for a wilder valley with a milky stream and denser forest. Both are day trips, and we would not combine them in one day. With two spare days, do one on each.
