Yusmarg (Yousmarg) is the easy meadow: open grass, scattered walnut and pine, a stream and room to wander, within a morning's drive of Srinagar. Our Yusmarg destination page describes carpets of wildflowers, walnut groves and mirrored streams, and calls it a gentle escape into the pastoral soul of Kashmir. This page, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, covers the taxi: the route, the time, the vehicles, what the fare depends on, and the practical points that decide whether the day goes well. The name is usually glossed as the meadow of Jesus; the same place appears as Yusmarg and Yousmarg.
Roughly 45 km each way, and about one and a half to two hours on a good day. Published distances differ by a few kilometres depending on where you start and which route the driver takes, so we give the distance as a rough guide and the time as the figure to plan with. Weekends, school hours, rain and the occasional slow vehicle on the climb can add to it.
| Stretch | What it is like | What slows it down |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar to Budgam | Flat roads through towns and farmland | Morning traffic, market days |
| Budgam towards Charar-i-Sharief | A quieter road through villages and fields; the shrine town lies on the way | Narrow stretches, local traffic, cattle |
| Onward to the meadow | A gradual climb through forest, then open grass | Rain, mud, oncoming vehicles on a single-lane road |
| Return | The same road, downhill | Evening traffic into Srinagar, early dusk in cooler months |
The road usually runs through Budgam and the shrine town of Charar-i-Sharief, though a driver may choose differently on the day. Leave Srinagar by about 8 or 9 am, so you reach the meadow in the late morning, have several hours there and are back in the city before the light goes.
It is a meadow on a gentle slope, ringed by forest, with a mountain stream, the Doodhganga, running nearby. A short distance away lies the small lake of Nilnag. The pace is the attraction. People sit, picnic, walk the paths, ride a pony and take photographs, and there is little to buy or tick off. It suits families with children, older travellers who want a drive and a picnic, and couples who want a day away from the bustle of Srinagar. It is less suited to travellers who want an itinerary packed with sights.
It is also an easy way to add a day of countryside to a city stay. Our Srinagar destination guide covers the lake and the gardens, and our offbeat Kashmir tours page covers the less-visited places further out.
Both are meadows in Budgam district, and both are day trips. In general, they feel different.
| Yusmarg | Doodhpathri | |
|---|---|---|
| The feel | Open lawns on a gentle slope, with scattered trees | A bowl-shaped valley with a milky stream and denser forest |
| The road | A steady climb on a mostly easier road | A longer hill road with a slower last stretch |
| Good for | A picnic, a stroll, a pony ride, an easy day with children or older parents | A quieter, wilder day, with the stream and the forest |
| Watch for | Weekend crowds in summer | Mud and a rough last stretch in wet weather |
If you have two days, you can do one on each. Our Doodhpathri destination page describes the second meadow, and our Srinagar to Doodhpathri taxi page covers its road. We would not do both in a single day, since the day would be mostly driving.
Yusmarg is a seasonal place. It is easiest from late spring to autumn, and in winter, snow can affect the road and the meadow. We do not quote opening dates, because conditions change by year and notices appear at short notice. We check the road for your date before you set out.
| Months | What to expect | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| April to June | Fresh green grass, cool air, wildflowers beginning | A jacket for the morning; showers possible |
| July to September | The greenest weeks and the busiest; picnic season | Weekend crowds; rain can make paths muddy |
| October to November | Cold, clear days and autumn colour | Short days; start early and leave by mid-afternoon |
| December to March | Snow and cold; the road may be affected | We do not plan this as a day trip unless the road is confirmed that morning |
Our month-by-month guide puts these months next to the rest of the valley, and our hidden gems guide covers other quieter places.
We do not print a fixed fare on this page, because it depends on the vehicle, the season, the hours the driver waits and whether you return the same day, and these change. We quote on WhatsApp and confirm the fare before you pay. When you compare quotes, compare what each includes. Our taxi packages include a dedicated vehicle with an experienced driver, fuel, toll tax and driver allowance, so ask any other operator whether the same applies, as well as the hours of waiting, any parking or entry charge at the meadow, and what happens if the road is closed. Our Kashmir taxi service page covers the fleet and the service.
Ask too whether the cab can go all the way to the meadow or whether the last leg goes by a local vehicle or on ponies. At several Kashmir meadows, local operators control the last leg, and we tell you before you pay if that applies here.
| Group | Vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two or three travellers | Swift Dzire sedan | Economical, and suitable on this road in dry weather |
| Four to six travellers | Innova or Innova Crysta | Space for a family and a picnic, with more comfort on the climb |
| Seven to twelve travellers | 8-seater or 14-seater tempo traveller | One vehicle for a larger group; confirm the road suits the size |
| A wet or muddy day | An SUV such as the Scorpio or Fortuner | More ground clearance |
Pony rides are paid directly to the operator, so agree the price before you mount; our pony ride page explains how they work elsewhere in Kashmir.
Please take your rubbish home and keep to the paths. Our packing list has the longer version for a Kashmir trip.
Send your hotel, date, number of travellers and preferred vehicle through our contact page. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. For other road trips from the city, see our pages on Doodhpathri, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, and our taxi packages for multi-day plans.

Roughly 45 km each way, though published figures differ by a few kilometres depending on the start point and the route. The time is the better guide: about one and a half to two hours each way on a normal day. We confirm the route with the driver on the day.
Plan on about one and a half to two hours each way. The plains section through Budgam is quick, and the last climb is slower. Weekends, rain and local traffic can add time. We suggest leaving by 8 or 9 am so you have several hours at the meadow and are back before dusk.
The fare depends on the vehicle, season, waiting time and whether you return the same day, so we do not print one figure. We quote on WhatsApp and confirm before you pay. Ask what the price includes: fuel, toll, driver allowance, waiting hours and any parking or entry charge.
Both spellings are used for the same meadow. The name is usually glossed as the meadow of Jesus. We write Yusmarg on this site, and our destination page uses Yousmarg in its address. Whichever spelling you search, a taxi to either goes to the same place in Budgam district.
Choose Yusmarg for open lawns, an easier road and an easy picnic day, and Doodhpathri for a wilder valley with a milky stream and denser forest. Both are day trips, and we would not combine them in one day. If you have two days to spare, you can do one on each.
Late spring to autumn is the easy season: April to June is fresh and green, July to September is greenest and busiest, and October to November is cold and clear. Snow in winter can affect the road. We check conditions for your date and do not promise access.
Yes, it is one of the gentler day trips from Srinagar, with open grass and short walks. The drive is a couple of hours each way, so bring snacks, warm layers and a rain jacket. Tell us if anyone has mobility or health needs, and we shape the pace and choose a comfortable vehicle.
Most visitors go for the day and return to Srinagar. Overnight stays near the meadow are limited and depend on the season and the road, so we do not plan on one unless the road is confirmed. Ask us if you want a night, and we check what is available for your dates.
