How do you get to Pahalgam from Srinagar?

The road leaves Srinagar southwards, passes the saffron fields and the cricket-bat workshops of the Anantnag area, and then follows the Lidder upstream into the valley. Published distances and drive times differ by a few kilometres and minutes, so we give ranges. Our Srinagar to Pahalgam taxi page explains the route and the vehicles.

OptionWhat it isOur advice
Private cab from SrinagarA car and driver for the whole tripThe easiest choice for families and for anyone with luggage
Tempo travellerA larger vehicle for a groupSee our 8-seater and 14-seater pages
Local union cab inside PahalgamUsed for Betaab, Aru and other local pointsSrinagar vehicles are usually not allowed to run these local trips, so the cost is on direct payment; we explain it when we plan the day

What is there to do in Pahalgam?

  • Walk beside the Lidder river, which runs fast and clear, and sit at a riverside cafe.
  • See Betaab Valley and Aru Valley, the two classic day trips from the town; Aru is about 12 km beyond Pahalgam.
  • Ride a pony along the forest trails, as described on our pony ride page.
  • Try river rafting in the season, with a briefing and life jackets.
  • Visit the old temple in the town, and the market for dry fruit and shawls.
  • Trek towards Kolahoi Glacier from Aru, a multi-day route that needs a guide and proper preparation.

Baisaran and Chandanwari have been reported closed to visitors in 2026, and access can change. We check what is open for your dates and plan around it; our Pahalgam taxi guide and safety guide carry the dated notices.

When should you go?

MonthsWhat to expectWhat to weigh
March to AprilCool, fresh, with trees leafing outRain and cold snaps; some higher trails still snowy
May to JuneGreen valleys, comfortable daysPopular with families; book stays early
July to AugustThe greenest weeks and the Amarnath Yatra seasonRain, crowds and traffic rules during the yatra; plan extra time
September to OctoberClear air, golden light and fewer crowdsCold evenings; short days towards October
November to FebruaryCold, quiet, with snow in placesFewer services; some trails closed; we check the road before you travel

Our Pahalgam month-by-month guide goes into more detail, and the Pahalgam travel guide and Pahalgam itinerary help you shape the days.

Where should you stay in Pahalgam?

A riverside hotel on the Lidder, a few minutes from the market, is the easiest base for most visitors. Choose the town centre for walking and ponies, the Aru road for quiet, and Aru Valley only for a simple, remote night. Check heating, meals, the walk to the market and the road in. Our where to stay in Pahalgam guide compares the choices, and our Pahalgam hotel booking page lets you ask for availability and rates for your dates.

How long should you spend in Pahalgam?

Two nights is the comfortable number: one day for the drive and the river, a second for Aru and Betaab. A single night works as part of a longer circuit, as on our 4N/5D Kashmir Classic package. A day trip from Srinagar is possible but means about five to six hours in the car.

What does a one-day plan look like?

  1. Leave Srinagar early; in autumn, stop at the saffron fields near Pampore on the way.
  2. Reach Pahalgam by late morning and take a walk by the river.
  3. Hire a local union cab for Aru or Betaab, with the price agreed before you set off.
  4. Have lunch in the market or at your hotel.
  5. Return along the Lidder valley with time in hand to reach Srinagar before dark.

What should you know about access and safety?

  • No special permit is needed for Pahalgam; carry government photo ID. See our permits and ID guide.
  • Pahalgam has been in the news since the April 2025 attack at Baisaran. Several sites were closed afterwards, and some stayed closed at the last check on our safety guide. Security is visible, and checkposts are routine.
  • In the Amarnath Yatra weeks, traffic rules, crowds and hotel demand change. See our Amarnath Yatra package.
  • Rain can swell the Lidder and close riverbank paths. Follow your guide's advice.
  • Foreign governments publish travel advisories for the region that change often. Read our safety guide and ask us about your dates.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Pahalgam from Srinagar and how long does the drive take?

Pahalgam is roughly 90 to 95 km from Srinagar, depending on the source, and the drive takes about 2 to 3 hours. Rain, road works and traffic in the yatra weeks can add time. We confirm the road and the timing before you set out.

Is one day enough for Pahalgam?

One day is enough for the drive, the river and one valley, but it is a long day. Two nights is comfortable: you see Aru and Betaab without rushing and enjoy the evening by the river. Pahalgam rewards a slower pace.

What is the right time to visit Pahalgam?

May to October is the usual window, with green valleys and open trails. July and August are the greenest and busiest, with the Amarnath Yatra adding traffic. September and October are clear and calmer. Winter is quiet, with snow in places.

Is Baisaran open?

Baisaran meadow has been reported closed to visitors, and no reopening was found at the last check on our safety guide. Access can change, so we check what is open for your dates and plan the day around it rather than promise a particular stop.

Do I need a permit for Pahalgam?

No special permit is needed for Pahalgam itself, but carry government photo ID. Checkposts are routine, and rules for border areas differ. Our permits and ID guide explains them, and we confirm anything that applies to your passport and dates.

Can I book local cabs in Pahalgam?

Local points such as Betaab and Aru are normally covered by local union cabs, which are paid directly. We explain this when we plan the day, so there are no surprises. Agree the price and the stops before you set off.

Is Pahalgam good for families and older travellers?

Yes, with simple planning. The riverside walks are gentle, ponies help on the trails, and a hotel close to the market limits walking. Tell us about mobility and the age of children, and we choose a base and a pace that suit.
