What Pahalgam is like
Pahalgam is the Kashmir people picture when they dream of a hill station: a wide green valley, a fast clear river, pine forest on the slopes and a small town of wooden shops and cottages. It is quieter than Srinagar, cooler than the plains and slower than Gulmarg. Most people come for the scenery and stay for the calm, and it is a favourite for honeymooners, families and walkers. The drive is part of the pleasure, through saffron fields, apple orchards and pine forest.
Getting there and around
The road from Srinagar runs through Pampore and Anantnag and takes about two and a half hours in good conditions. Cabs are the easiest way; shared taxis and buses run on the same road. Inside Pahalgam, local taxis usually handle the sightseeing runs to the nearby valleys, and a union rule often applies to vehicles from outside, so we arrange your local transport with this in mind. Mobile coverage in Jammu and Kashmir has its own rules, and prepaid SIM cards from other states often do not work, so ask your operator before you travel. Drink bottled water, eat freshly cooked food and follow local advice on trails.

Betaab Valley is a wide meadow ringed by forest, a short drive from town and easy to walk across. Aru Valley lies a little further, quieter and greener, a start point for treks and a place to sit beside a stream. Chandanwari is a rocky, dramatic road head where the Amarnath trek begins, with snow bridges that last into summer in some years. Each is a half-day, and together they fill a full day if you start early. We confirm that each is open before we plan around it.
Food, shopping and evenings
Pahalgam's food is simple and good: grilled trout, Kashmiri breads, rice and mutton or chicken dishes, and kahwa to end a meal. The town has a small market with shawls, dry fruit and handicrafts, and hotels often serve meals on site, so evenings are early and quiet. If you want a lively night out, Srinagar is the better place; Pahalgam is for stars, a fire and a walk by the river.
