How do you fit a shikara into your Srinagar days?

If you sleep on a houseboat, the lake is at your door. If you stay in a hotel in the city, the ghats are a short drive away. A good rhythm is the Mughal Gardens and the old town in the day, and the shikara at the end, so the sunset slot closes the day. Is a shikara ride safe, and what should you bring?

We cannot promise a boat ride is without risk. Shikaras rock when you board, weather can turn on the lake, and wet steps at the ghats are slippery. Sit still, do not stand, and keep children seated and close. Tell us about any mobility needs and we choose an easier landing.

• A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses for the glare off the water.
• A warm layer for dawn and evening, even in summer.
• A light rain jacket in spring and summer.
• Small cash for any purchase you choose to make from shop boats.
• A phone strap or waterproof pouch, so nothing goes into the lake.

How do you book a shikara on Dal Lake?

1. Send your date, preferred time (dawn, daytime or sunset), group size and ages, and whether you want a meal on board, through our contact page or on WhatsApp.
2. We confirm the ride, the length, the stops and the rate in writing, and tell you when to be at the ghat.
3. Keep to the agreed rate on the day, and tell us if anything differs.
