What is camping in Gurez like?

Gurez is a remote valley near the Line of Control, with terraced fields, wooden houses and the Kishanganga River running through it. Camping here is simple and quiet: a tent by the river or on a meadow, a camp kitchen, an evening bonfire and mountains on every side. Expect few lights, thin phone signal and a great deal of sky. How do you get to Gurez, and what about permissions?

Gurez is about 130 km from Srinagar over the Razdan Pass, a winding drive of roughly four to five hours or more, and we suggest an SUV. Our Srinagar to Gurez taxi page describes the road.

Gurez lies in Bandipora district near the border. The entry arrangement has changed over time and published sources disagree, so we do not quote a rule from a blog. We ask the district office for your dates and your IDs and tell you the answer in writing before you pay. Carry an original photo ID for every adult, and if you are a foreign traveller, ask us first. What should you pack?

• Warm layers, including a down jacket and thermals, since the nights are cold even in summer.
• Sturdy shoes, a rain jacket and a hat.
• A headlamp or torch with spare batteries, and a power bank.
• Insect repellent, sunscreen and your regular medicines.
• Cash, because card machines and cash machines are scarce, and offline maps, because signal is patchy.
• A refillable water bottle.

Is camping in Gurez safe?

We cannot promise it is without risk. The valley is remote, medical help is far away, nights are cold and the weather can turn, so we use designated campsites, local guides and a vehicle that suits the road. Keep to the campsite and the paths your guide chooses, stay away from the river bank when the water is high, and keep your camera away from military and border sites. Tell us before you book about any medical need, because the altitude and the distance matter.
