How do you get to Gurez from Srinagar?

The road leaves Srinagar for Bandipora and then climbs to the Razdan Pass before descending into the valley beside the Kishanganga river. The drive is long and winding, and some stretches are rough, so we recommend a sturdy vehicle. Our Srinagar to Gurez taxi page explains the route and the vehicles.

What is there to do in Gurez?

• Walk beside the Kishanganga river, which runs cold and clear through the valley.
• Visit Habba Khatoon Peak, the pyramid-shaped mountain named after the Kashmiri poet, and the spring at its foot.
• See the wooden houses and terraced fields of the villages near Dawar, the main town.
• Meet the Shina-speaking community, whose culture and food differ from the rest of the valley.
• Go on to Tulail, further up the valley, by union cab.

When should you go?

Do you need a permit for Gurez?

Gurez is a border valley on the Line of Control, and access has been governed by the district administration and the security forces. Rules for Indian and foreign nationals differ, and published sources do not always agree, so we do not state one rule here. Our permits and ID guide explains why, and we confirm what applies to your passport and dates with the issuing office before you pay. Carry government photo ID, and expect checkposts on the road.

Where should you stay in Gurez?

Choices are limited and simple: government tourist bungalows, local guesthouses, homestays and riverside camps. Book ahead, especially in July and August. Expect basic comfort and warm hospitality, and do not count on constant electricity, hot water or mobile signal; see our SIM card guide. How long should you spend in Gurez?

Allow one night as a minimum and two if you can. Our taxi page offers day trips, but about 130 km each way makes that a very long day for little time in the valley. What does a two-day plan look like?

1. Day 1: leave Srinagar early, cross the pass and reach Dawar by the afternoon; visit Habba Khatoon Peak and the spring before dark.
2. Day 2: walk by the river or visit the villages; go on to Tulail by union cab if time and the road allow.
3. Return to Srinagar the same evening or on the next morning, with a long day of driving.

What should you know about access and safety?

• This is a sensitive border area. Follow instructions at checkposts, and do not photograph military installations or personnel.
• The road is long and winding, and weather changes quickly. We check the road on the morning of the drive and keep a spare day where we can.
• Carry cash, because remote places may not accept cards or have working ATMs.
• Bring warm layers even in summer, as nights are cold.
