Betaab Valley
Let us plan your trip
Betaab is a bowl-shaped meadow ringed by pine and deodar, with a clear stream running through it and snow peaks above the tree line. It earned its name from the 1983 film Betaab, shot here, and many films have used it since. The ground is grass and gravel, so it is easy to walk, and tea stalls and ponies wait near the entrance. It is more developed and busier than its neighbour Aru, which makes it a good first stop for families and first-time visitors.
The road from Srinagar runs to Pahalgam, and Betaab lies on the valley road above the town. The usual practice is to base yourself in Pahalgam and take a local cab from there, because the valley roads are served by local taxis and an outside vehicle usually drops and collects only at your hotel. Our Srinagar to Pahalgam taxi guide explains who drives what. Our package tables list the Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari trip as an extra, paid directly.
| Leg | Time and distance | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar to Pahalgam | About 2.5 to 3 hours on a dry day | Leave in the morning; stops for saffron fields and orchards add time |
| Pahalgam to Betaab | About 15 km, roughly half an hour | Local cab, paid directly; narrow in places |
| In the valley | One to two hours on foot | Wear shoes with grip, because the grass can be wet and uneven |
| Betaab Valley | Aru Valley | Chandanwari | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character | A sheltered pine valley with a stream, popular with film crews and day visitors | A wide alpine valley with open meadows and trail heads | The road end of the Amarnath Yatra route |
| Feel | Busier, with stalls and ponies | Quieter, with room to walk | Functional; snow can linger into early summer |
| Suits | A first visit and easy walking | A slower half-day | A look at the stark upper valley |
If you have time for only one stop, choose Betaab for ease and Aru for quiet. Read our Pahalgam guide for the wider area.
| Season | What to expect | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | Snow can block the road and lie on the meadow | Access may be restricted, so ask us first |
| Spring | Melting snow, full streams and a green meadow | Cold and wet; some stalls may not yet be open |
| Summer | The greenest weeks and the busiest days | Showers are common, and Amarnath Yatra traffic affects the Pahalgam road in July and August |
| Autumn | Golden light, clear air and fewer visitors | Short days; the sun drops early behind the mountains |
For a month-by-month view of the town, see our Pahalgam seasons guide.
Stay in Pahalgam, not in the valley itself. The town has riverside resorts, lodges and budget guesthouses along the Lidder. Our Hotel Booking Pahalgam page lets you ask for options and rates for your dates, and our guide to where to stay in Pahalgam compares the riverside, the town centre and Aru. Our valley packages, such as the 3N/4D Kashmir Quick Getaway from Rs 11,950 and the 4N/5D Kashmir Classic from Rs 13,800, include a Pahalgam stay. These are per person on twin sharing.
Send your dates and group size through our contact page, and we confirm the road and access before you pay.
About 15 km on our Betaab guide, roughly half an hour by local cab on a narrow valley road. Rain, traffic and checks can add time. Most travellers combine it with Aru Valley and Chandanwari in one half-day outing, and we confirm the road on the morning.
It is named after the 1983 Hindi film Betaab, which was shot here and made the meadow famous. Many other films have been shot in the valley since, and local guides enjoy pointing out where. The valley itself is a quiet pine meadow with a stream.
One to two hours is enough for a walk, tea, photographs and a short pony ride. Count a half-day if you add Aru Valley and Chandanwari. Go early to avoid the crowd and the afternoon shade.
Usually not beyond Pahalgam. The valley roads are served by local cabs, and an outside vehicle drops and collects at your hotel. A local cab to Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari is paid directly. We explain the arrangement when we plan the day.
Roughly May to October is the usual window, with summer the greenest and busiest and autumn the clearest. Winter snow can block the road. Tell us your dates and we say honestly what to expect and whether access is open.
Tourist sites in the valley, Betaab among them, have been closed by order at times and reopened later. We cannot promise the position for a future date, so we check it before you pay and tell you in writing. Our safety guide keeps the dated picture.
