Leh

Let us plan your trip

How do you get to Leh?

Most visitors fly in, which is quick but sharp on the body, because you go from the plains to about 3,500 m in a couple of hours. Others come by road and climb in stages, which many people find gentler.

Way inWhat it is likeOur advice
FlightThe fastest way, from Delhi and a few other cities; schedules and fares changeKeep the first day free
Road from SrinagarAbout 434 km over Zoji La, usually in two days; see our Srinagar to Leh road trip guideGentler on the body. Our Ladakh taxi and tempo traveller pages list vehicles
Road from ManaliA high, remote road via Sarchu, open only part of the yearKeep a buffer day for snow or slides

How do you cope with the altitude in Leh?

  • Rest for the whole first day, walk slowly, drink water often and skip alcohol until you feel settled.
  • Do not go up to a high pass or lake on day one or two. We put Nubra Valley and Pangong after your Leh nights.
  • Tell your driver or hotel at once about a headache, nausea or breathlessness.
  • See your doctor first if you have a heart, lung or blood pressure condition, are pregnant, or travel with a young child or an older parent. Our package pages list heater charges and oxygen cylinders as extras.

What is there to see and do in Leh?

PlaceWhy people goPlanning note
Leh PalaceA former royal palace above the old town, with views over the rooftopsClimb slowly; allow an hour or two
Shanti StupaA white-domed stupa on a hilltop in Chanspa, popular for the late lightOur itineraries visit it in the late afternoon of arrival day
Leh MarketPashmina, apricot products, Tibetan handicrafts and Ladakhi ornamentsCarry some cash
Sangam, Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Patthar SahibWhere the Zanskar and Indus rivers meet, a gravity-hill illusion and a gurudwara in memory of Guru NanakA morning's drive, usually with Spituk Monastery and the Army-run Hall of Fame
Hemis, Thiksey and Shey PalaceLarge monasteries and a former royal palace in the Indus valleyUsually seen on the way back from Pangong

When should you go to Leh?

MonthsWhat to expectWhat to weigh
November to MarchVery cold, snow on the passes, the Srinagar road shut for long spells, many hotels closedWe do not plan the road trip in these months
April to MayCold mornings and roads that open on dates that change each yearAsk us first and keep a spare day
June to SeptemberThe usual window: open passes, long days, the busiest weeks; nights stay coldBook rooms and vehicles early
OctoberClear, cold and quiet, but early snow can close a pass at short noticeKeep a buffer day at the end

Where should you stay in Leh?

Most visitors stay near the main market, where restaurants, shops and the palace are a short walk away. Quieter stays sit on the edge of town with open mountain views. Our Hotels in Leh page lets you ask for options and current rates for your dates. Every Ladakh package lists hotels in four tiers, Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Premium, so you can compare before you choose.

How many nights do you need, and what does a first day look like?

Plan at least two nights in Leh at the start. Our shortest circuit, the Short Trip to Ladakh, takes four nights, and most travellers are more comfortable with five or six, as on the Ladakh Expedition with Nubra & Pangong. A gentle first day runs like this:

  1. Arrive, check in and rest. Drink water and do very little.
  2. Late afternoon: Shanti Stupa for the light, then Leh Palace and the market.
  3. An early dinner and an early night, with a warm layer to hand.

What should you know about permits and safety?

  • Leh and the monasteries around it are visited on photo ID. Nubra Valley, Pangong, Hanle and Tsomoriri need permission arranged before the trip. See our permits and ID guide; we confirm what your group needs.
  • Carry original photo ID, because checkposts may ask for it, and expect patchy mobile signal outside town.
  • The sun is strong, the air is dry and the nights are cold. Our packing list covers the layers.
  • We check roads, passes and weather on the morning of each drive.

Send us your dates and group size through our contact page, and we confirm vehicles, rooms, permits and pass conditions before you pay.

Questions travellers ask

How high is Leh, and will I get altitude sickness?

Leh is at about 3,500 m. Many visitors feel a headache or breathlessness at first, and fitness does not decide who is affected. Rest on day one, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your driver or hotel about any symptoms. See a doctor first if you have a heart or lung condition.

How many days do I need in Leh?

Allow at least two nights at the start for rest and local sights. A circuit with Nubra Valley and Pangong takes four nights on our shortest package, and most travellers are more comfortable with five or six. Ask us to match the nights to your fitness and dates.

When is the right time to visit Leh?

Roughly June to September is the usual window, when the passes are open. Spring and late autumn are less certain because snow can close a pass quickly, and winter is very cold with many hotels closed. Tell us your dates and we say honestly what to expect.

Do I need a permit to visit Leh?

Leh and its monasteries are visited on photo ID. Permission is needed for border areas such as Nubra Valley and Pangong, and the rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change. Our Ladakh packages list inner line permit fees as included, and we confirm your needs when you enquire.

Should I fly to Leh or drive from Srinagar?

Flying is faster. Driving is gentler on the body because you climb in steps with a night in Kargil, but it is about 14 to 16 hours of driving in all and usable only in the warmer months. If your time is short, we suggest the flight.

Can I visit Leh with children or older parents?

Many families do, but altitude affects children and older travellers more, and medical help is limited outside town. Talk to your doctor, keep the first day free and let us slow the plan. We can hold Pangong, which is higher, until you have spent nights in Leh.
