What is the Srinagar to Leh road like?

The highway climbs from the green Kashmir Valley through Sonmarg, crosses Zoji La into the dry mountains of Ladakh, and follows the Indus towards Leh. The landscape changes more in two days than on almost any other Indian road.

How is the fare worked out?

We have not printed a fare for this route on this page, because it changes with the date, the vehicle and the plan. Compare what each quote covers, not only the number.

What is included, and what can cost extra?

Our taxi tours list a dedicated vehicle with a driver, fuel, toll tax and the driver's allowance as included. For Ladakh, ask the quote to state the same items, then ask about:

• The driver's night halts and meals on the way.
• Parking and any entry fees or environmental fees that apply to your plan.

Is the taxi for the drop only, or for Ladakh sightseeing too?

A Srinagar taxi usually delivers you to Leh. Local taxi unions in Ladakh normally run the sightseeing from Leh, such as trips to Nubra and Pangong, so plan those separately. How do you handle altitude on this road?

Leh is at about 3,500 m, and you cross passes above 3,500 m to reach it. Altitude sickness can affect fit people, so the usual rule is to go slowly:

• Take the two-day plan with a night in Kargil, and rest on your first day in Leh.
• Drink plenty of water, eat lightly and avoid alcohol on the first day.
• Headache, nausea and breathlessness are warning signs. If they get worse, tell your driver, go down and get medical help.
• Talk to your doctor before the trip if you have a heart or lung condition, or are pregnant, and carry any prescribed medicine.

What about the season, snow and the road?

• Zoji La is usually closed by snow for much of winter, and the high passes beyond it can be snowy too. The road reopens in spring, but the dates change from year to year.
• Traffic on narrow stretches is often regulated, so the drive can be held for hours. Start early.
• Landslides and swollen streams can close sections in the monsoon months.
• Afternoons are warmer, and melting snow can make some stretches muddy.

What about permits and ID?

Rules differ by place and by nationality, and they change. The Srinagar-Leh highway and the places beyond, such as Nubra and Pangong, can have different requirements. What should you pack?

• Layers and a warm jacket, since the passes are cold even in July.
• Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm for the strong mountain sun.
• Water, snacks, cash and a power bank, because services are sparse on long stretches.
• Any personal medicine, in your hand luggage.
