The journey covers Srinagar to Sonamarg, over the Zoji La pass (3,528m), through Dras (the second coldest inhabited place on Earth), past Kargil, and over the Fotu La pass (4,108m) before descending into the Indus Valley and reaching Leh.

Why do this road by Tempo Traveller

The Srinagar to Leh highway is one of the great road journeys: green valley, snow-capped passes, the cold desert beyond the Zoji La and the broad Indus valley at the end. It is also long and tiring, so comfort matters. A Tempo Traveller carries a group in one vehicle with push-back seats and large windows, and the driver stays with you throughout, which is easier than changing cars halfway.

Day by day

• Day 1: Srinagar to Sonmarg and over the Zoji La, down through the Dras valley to Kargil, where you spend the night. Plan about 204 km and five to six hours of driving.
• Day 2: Kargil to Leh over the Fotu La and through the Indus valley, with halts for photographs and meals. Arrive in Leh in the afternoon, with time to rest at altitude.

The old Mulbekh and Lamayuru stretches are some of the most photographed parts of the route, and your driver knows where a halt is worth making.

Which Tempo Traveller to choose

Season, altitude and permits

The road is usually open from about June to September. The Zoji La and Fotu La can close in bad weather or heavy snow, and sections of the highway are sensitive to landslides. Altitude is the other risk: the climb is gradual, but Leh is high. Drink water, eat lightly and rest on arrival before any further climbs. Some stretches and onward destinations need permits; we help with the paperwork and confirm what applies to your dates.

After Leh
