What is there to do in Srinagar?

Where should you stay in Srinagar?
The main choice is a houseboat or a hotel. A houseboat gives you the lake, carved walnut-wood interiors and a shikara at the door; a hotel gives you space, a bigger bathroom and an easier time in winter. How long should you spend in Srinagar?
Allow two nights for the city on its own: a day for the gardens, the temple and the lake, and a slower day for the old city, shopping and food. Add nights for the mountains, since Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg are each a day trip of one and a half to three hours each way. What does a one-day plan look like?
- Morning: Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh while the light is soft and the crowds thin.
- Late morning: Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal, or the Shankaracharya Temple for the view.
- Lunch: in a restaurant or at your hotel, with kahwa afterwards.
- Afternoon: Hazratbal or a walk through the old city lanes.
- Evening: a shikara ride on Dal Lake at sunset, then dinner at the hotel or houseboat.

How many days do you need in Srinagar?
Two nights cover the city on its own, with one day for the gardens, temple and lake and a slower day for the old city, shopping and food. Add nights if you plan day trips to Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonmarg, which are each one and a half to three hours away.
Is it better to stay on a houseboat or in a hotel in Srinagar?
