Tours & trip types
Srinagar is a city to see slowly: a big lake, terraced gardens built for emperors, a hilltop temple with a view, and a shrine on the water. A local sightseeing tour strings them together in one comfortable loop by private car. This page, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, covers what the tour includes, how long it takes, the order we suggest, what it depends on, and the small practical points that make the day easy.
These are the stops we use most. Our Mughal gardens guide gives the history of each garden, and our Srinagar destination page covers the city.
| Stop | What it is | Our note |
|---|---|---|
| Nishat Bagh | The largest of the Mughal gardens, built in 1633, on twelve terraces, per our guide | Go in the morning, when the sun lights the cascades |
| Shalimar Bagh | A garden built by Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan, with a black marble pavilion | Our guide suggests the morning for Nishat and Shalimar, to avoid crowds |
| Chashme Shahi | The smallest Mughal garden, built around a spring | Quiet and short; suits late afternoon |
| Pari Mahal | A terraced garden above the lake, with views over Dal | Good late in the day, for the light |
| Shankaracharya Temple | A hilltop temple above the city, with a wide view of the lake | There are steps, and a security check is normal; optional for those who prefer not to climb |
| Hazratbal | A revered shrine on the shore of Dal Lake | Dress modestly, remove shoes, and expect a crowd on Fridays |
| Dal Lake shikara | A slow ride on the water, usually an hour | Included for one hour in our packages; see below |
Some itineraries also add the Botanical Garden, which our 6N/7D Doodhpathri package lists on the first Srinagar day, and, in spring, the tulip garden; see our tulip garden ticket page.
The gardens run along the lake's eastern side, so the driver links them in a single loop. Hazratbal sits on the northern shore and fits at the start or the end of the loop. Roads along the lake can be slow in the morning and evening, so we do not squeeze too much into one day.
| Plan | Stops | Roughly how long | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half day | Shalimar and Nishat, then Chashme Shahi or Pari Mahal | About four to five hours | A first afternoon, a stopover, or a short stay |
| Half day, with a shrine | Hazratbal, then Shalimar and Nishat | About four to five hours | Travellers who want a mix of garden and shrine |
| Full day | The gardens, Shankaracharya Temple, Hazratbal, lunch, and a sunset shikara ride | About seven to eight hours with breaks | Guests with a free day and good energy |
| Full day with the old city | The above, plus a walk in the old city | A full day | Travellers who like heritage and markets; see our old Srinagar heritage walk guide |
Leave your hotel by 8 or 9 am if you want the gardens in the morning, and tell us if you would rather start later. If you arrive by air and want to begin the same day, say so, and we plan around your flight; our Srinagar airport taxi page explains the pickup.
Yes. Our packages put Srinagar sightseeing on the first day, usually with the airport pickup. The 4N/5D Kashmir Classic lists Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Pari Mahal, Chashme Shahi, Shankaracharya Temple and a one-hour shikara ride on day one. Every figure below is copied from the package's own price table, per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar, for two travellers.
| Package | Srinagar sightseeing on day one | Per person, 2 travellers |
|---|---|---|
| 4N/5D Kashmir Classic | Four Mughal gardens, Shankaracharya Temple, a one-hour shikara ride | ₹13,800 |
| 3N/4D Quick Getaway | Nishat and Shalimar after check-in at the houseboat | ₹11,950 |
| 6N/7D Kashmir with Doodhpathri | Nishat, Shalimar, the Botanical Garden and Shankaracharya Temple | ₹18,200 (its listing says valid July to September 2026, so ask for the rate on your dates) |
A stand-alone sightseeing day is for travellers who are not on a package, who are staying longer than the package covers, or who want a second day of the city. Our taxi packages page lists one-day local sightseeing among the plans we offer.
We do not print a fixed fare on this page. It depends on the vehicle, the number of hours or the length of the loop, and the season, and these change. We quote on WhatsApp and confirm the fare before you pay. Our taxi packages include a dedicated vehicle with an experienced driver, fuel, toll tax and driver allowance, so ask any other operator whether theirs does too. Garden entry fees, a guide, parking and the shikara ride are separate, and we say so in the quote. Our Kashmir taxi service page covers the fleet, and our shikara page covers the ride.
For two or three people a sedan such as the Swift Dzire is fine. For a family of four to six, an Innova has room for bags and children. Larger groups can ask about a tempo traveller.
Every season has a case, and each shows a different face of the gardens. Our Mughal gardens guide calls spring and autumn the most beautiful.
| Season | What you see | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Spring, March to May | Blossom and tulips, fresh green lawns | Cool mornings and showers; the tulip garden has its own dates |
| Summer, June to August | Flower beds, shade under the chinars, long evenings | Warm afternoons; go early for the gardens |
| Autumn, September to November | Golden and red chinar leaves | Cold evenings, early dusk |
| Winter, December to February | Bare trees, quiet gardens, a cold lake | Short days and early dusk; plan the day to finish by mid-afternoon |
Our month-by-month guide puts them next to the rest of the valley.

Send your hotel or houseboat, the date, the number of travellers and whether you want a half day or a full day through our contact page. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. If you are staying on a Dal Lake houseboat, tell us the ghat number so the driver can find you.

A half day is about four to five hours, which covers two or three gardens, and a full day is seven to eight hours with breaks and adds the hilltop temple, the shrine and a shikara ride. Traffic along the lake can be slow in the morning and evening, so we do not pack too much in.
The usual stops are Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal, Shankaracharya Temple, Hazratbal and a shikara ride on Dal Lake. In spring we can add the tulip garden. We choose the loop with you, depending on your time, your energy and the weather.
We suggest leaving by 8 or 9 am. Our Mughal gardens guide recommends the morning for Nishat and Shalimar, to avoid crowds, and the late afternoon for Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal, for the light. If you land later in the day, we start from your arrival and keep it short.
The fare depends on the vehicle, the hours and the season, so we do not print one figure. We quote on WhatsApp and confirm before you pay. Entry fees, a guide, parking and the shikara ride are separate. Our packages already include sightseeing on the first Srinagar day.
Often, yes, depending on your flight and how tired you are. Our packages combine the airport pickup with the first sightseeing, and we keep the afternoon light. If your flight lands late, we move the tour to the next morning and use the evening for a shikara ride.
Mostly. Our family guide calls the Mughal gardens largely flat and wheelchair-accessible, and the shikara ride is slow. The hilltop temple has steps, so it is optional. We plan slower stops and shorter loops for older travellers, and choose a vehicle that is easy to step into.
No. Guide charges are extra, as they are on our packages. Our Mughal gardens guide recommends hiring one, because the stories bring the gardens to life. Tell us if you want a guide, and we add it as a separate line on your quote.
Opening hours and weekly closures differ by site and change, so we check them for your day before we plan the loop. Shrines are busy at prayer times, especially on Fridays, and we plan around that. Nobody can promise a site is open on a particular day.
