How is a Kashmir taxi fare set?

Operators quote one-way, return and day trips on different bases, so compare what a quote covers, not only the number. We do not print a fixed rate for every route here. The typical market ranges we have for the main Valley day trips are on the Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg pages, labelled as market ranges rather than our tariff.

What is included, and what can cost extra?

Our taxi tours list a dedicated vehicle with a driver, fuel, toll tax and the driver's allowance as included. For any single trip, ask the quote to state the same four items, then ask about the points operators often bill separately:

• Parking at the stops and at your hotel.
• Waiting time, for example at a gondola station or a temple.
• A driver's night halt on multi-day trips.
• Entry fees, tickets, guides, ponies and activities, which are rarely part of a taxi fare.

Who drives at the resorts?

At several hill resorts, local taxi unions handle the point-to-point sightseeing inside the resort, so your Srinagar car may drop you at the hotel or parking area and a local union cab takes you to the viewpoints. This varies by resort and by season. We tell you where the handoff happens on your route and what it is likely to cost before you pay.

What should you know about roads and seasons?

• Winter: snow, chains and road closures can change plans at Gulmarg, Sonmarg and the passes. Nobody can promise a clear road, and we confirm the situation for your dates.
• Spring and summer: the tulip weeks and school holidays are busy, so book early.
• Autumn: clear weather makes the roads easier, and the days get shorter in November.
• Highways: the Jammu and Leh roads are long and weather-dependent, so start early.
