What is a Dal Lake houseboat, and does it move?

A houseboat here is built to be moored, not to travel. It sits at a fixed place on the lake with a sitting room, a dining room, bedrooms and a deck, and a small crew who cook and look after you. Walls and ceilings are usually carved wood. You do not sail it: you cross to the shore by shikara. To sleep somewhere new, book a different boat for another night.

How do you get to the boat?

Some boats have a lane to the door, others are reached only by shikara from a landing point called a ghat. That changes your first evening, especially with luggage or a late flight. These are sellers' words, not one official scale. The Tourism Department grades houseboats separately from any star label, so ask for the grade too, then compare boats room for room: view, bathroom, heating and distance from the road. Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake?

Dal Lake is larger and livelier, with the Boulevard, the markets and the gardens close by. Nigeen Lake is smaller and quieter, and some travellers find it too secluded.
