How to think about a Srinagar stay
Most visitors spend the first and last nights of a Kashmir trip in Srinagar, and many spend three or four, so the choice matters more than it seems. The city is spread out: lake, old town, gardens and the airport road all take time to cross, and traffic can be slow. The best question to ask is what you want from the night: a palace garden, a lake view from a bed, the convenience of a brand hotel or the quiet of a houseboat. Pick that first and the shortlist is short.
Palace and luxury
The LaLiT Grand Palace Srinagar was once the winter residence of Maharaja Hari Singh and still reads as a palace, with landscaped grounds and views towards Dal Lake. It is the most iconic address in the city and suits couples, special occasions and travellers who value history; read our LaLiT Grand Palace page for what to expect. Taj Dal View is another luxury name on the lake side; see Taj Dal View.
Brand hotels
Radisson Hotel Srinagar, the Radisson Collection by the Jhelum, Fortune Resort Heevan and Four Points by Sheraton offer brand-standard rooms, reliable service and predictable comfort. They suit business travellers, families who want familiar systems and anyone arriving late or leaving early for a flight. Compare them on the pages for Radisson Hotel Srinagar, Radisson Collection and Four Points by Sheraton.
Boutique and heritage
Karan Mahal is a restored heritage property that mixes old-world character with modern comfort. The Kabo is a boutique hotel with personal service. These smaller properties are quieter and more distinctive than the big hotels, with fewer rooms and more attention. If you like a place with a story, they are the ones to look at, and they usually need earlier booking in peak weeks.
Houseboats
A night on a houseboat is the Srinagar experience many travellers want. WelcomHeritage Gurkha Houseboats, Sukoon Houseboat and Butt's Clermont Houseboats are examples of heritage and luxury boats on the lake, with carved wood, a dining room, a sun deck and a shikara to take you ashore. They are atmospheric rather than modern: heating, hot water and space vary by boat and grade, so ask before you book. Read boat house in Srinagar and our comparison of Dal Lake vs Nigeen Lake houseboats.
Garden retreats
The Orchard Retreat & Spa is a quiet garden property away from the city bustle, for travellers who want to rest after the road. The trade-off is distance: it is less convenient for a short stay and a late flight. See The Orchard Retreat & Spa for details.
Choosing by area and by purpose
- For Dal Lake views and the shikara: a lake-side hotel or a houseboat.
- For the airport and the road to Gulmarg: a hotel on the airport side of the city.
- For the old city and the Jhelum: a riverside hotel.
- For gardens and calm: the retreats and heritage properties.
- For first and last nights: whichever is easiest to reach after or before a flight.
What to check before you book
Heating matters from October to March, hot water matters all year and the distance to the lake or the road matters for a city that is slow to cross. Ask about meals, late check-in, airport transfers and what happens if a strike or a road closure delays you. For houseboats, ask which lake, which grade and how you get ashore. Our hotel booking in Srinagar page explains how we book.
A sample three-night shape
A common pattern is one night in a hotel near the airport or the city on arrival, one or two nights on a houseboat for the lake and the shikara and a final night in a hotel that makes the departure easy. That mixes comfort with atmosphere and keeps the first and last days simple. If you want only one kind of stay, a lake-side hotel gives you the view without the houseboat's quirks, and a houseboat stay gives you the quirks without the view you could not get any other way.
Seasons and noise
Srinagar is hot enough in July and August to want a cool room, and cold from November to February, when heating is essential. Lake-side rooms are quiet at night but can hear early traffic and the call to prayer, which many visitors enjoy. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the road. In the busiest weeks, rooms in the best properties are held weeks ahead, and prices follow demand.
How we help
We book Srinagar hotels and houseboats as part of a Kashmir plan or on their own, tell you which suit your dates and say plainly if a property is not the right fit. Tell us your dates, the number of travellers and the kind of stay you want.
Questions travellers ask
What is the best hotel in Srinagar?
It depends on the trip. The LaLiT Grand Palace is the most iconic, brand hotels such as Radisson and Four Points offer reliable comfort, and houseboats and heritage stays offer atmosphere.
Should I stay in a hotel or a houseboat?
A houseboat is an experience, with a shikara ride, carved wood and a lake view, but with simpler facilities. A hotel is easier for comfort and convenience. Many travellers do a night of each.
Which area of Srinagar is best to stay in?
Dal Lake side for views and shikaras, the airport side for early flights and the road to Gulmarg, and the Jhelum side for a riverside setting. Traffic can be slow, so choose by the main thing you want to do.
When should I book Srinagar hotels?
Book early for May to August and for winter weekends, when the best properties fill first. Shoulder months are easier, and we can check availability on your dates.
Can you book my Srinagar hotel?
Yes. We book hotels and houseboats as part of a Kashmir plan, and confirm the property and terms in writing before you pay.
