What is a night on a houseboat in Srinagar really like?
You reach the lake edge by road, at a landing point called a ghat, and a shikara carries you and your bags across to the boat. Inside, the rooms are usually panelled in carved wood, with a sitting room, a dining room and a deck on the roof or the water side. Meals are served on board, and our Dal Lake houseboat page lists a lake-view bedroom, an attached bathroom with hot water, wazwan in the dining room and a sun deck.
The boat does not move, and the evening is quiet, with the lake around you and the lights of the shore in the distance. It is also a boat, not a hotel, so steps, narrow passages and a shikara crossing are part of the stay. That is the charm for many travellers and a hurdle for a few, which is why we ask about your group before we recommend one.
