What kind of stay should you expect in Gurez?

Gurez lies near the Line of Control, in a valley along the Kishanganga river, and tourism here is young. Rooms are clean and simple, many with attached bathrooms, and meals are home-style Kashmiri food served at fixed hours. Do not expect a spa, a gym or reliable Wi-Fi. Mobile signal is patchy and changes with the network, so tell your family the plan before you leave Srinagar and ask us what to expect.

How far is Gurez, and how do you get there?

Gurez is about 130 km from Srinagar, a drive of roughly four to five hours or more, longer when weather, road works or the Razdan Pass slow the road. We plan an early start so you arrive in daylight. Book a Srinagar to Gurez taxi for a couple or family, or a tempo traveller for a larger group.

What can you do from your Gurez stay?

• Walk the terraced fields and old wooden houses of the villages, and talk to the families who live there.
• Visit Habba Khatoon Peak and the spring named after her, and sit by the Kishanganga river.
• Add Tulail Valley on a second day. Our package page notes that our vehicle cannot go up to Tulail, and a local union cab is paid directly.
• Choose a quiet evening with no screen: the valley is a place to stop, not to tick off sights.

Do you need a permit for Gurez?

When should you go, and how long should you stay?

Go between May and October, when the pass road is open and the weather is mild. Snow closes the road for much of winter, and stays may not be open or reachable. One night is the minimum we suggest; a same-day return is possible but very long. Two nights give you a full day in the valley.
