Why take a Tempo Traveller to Gurez

Gurez is a remote border valley with terraced fields, wooden houses, the Kishanganga river and the Habba Khatoon peak, and it is far quieter than the better-known resorts. The road is long and in places rough, so a group is better off in one vehicle with a driver who knows it. A Tempo Traveller keeps friends or a family together, carries luggage for an overnight stay and gives everyone a seat that reclines on the climb to the pass.

The road, in plain terms

The drive leaves Srinagar and climbs through forest to the Razdan Pass before dropping into the valley. Expect about four to five hours when the road is clear, longer after rain or a landslide. The scenery is the point: snow peaks, dense forest and, once down, the river and the valley floor. Carry water, a warm layer even in summer, and some patience for slow stretches. Season and permits

Gurez is a seasonal destination. The road is usually open in the warmer months, roughly May to October, and winter snow can close it for long periods. It is also close to the Line of Control, so visitors are expected to follow entry formalities. These rules and the documents they need change from year to year, so we do not print a fixed list here; we check what applies to your dates and tell you before you pay.

Day trip or overnight

A day trip is possible in principle, but most of the day then goes on the road. We recommend at least one night in Gurez so you can see the valley in daylight and rest after the drive.
