Kashmir
If Kashmir has a single picture, it is a shikara on Dal Lake with mountains behind it. This page, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, explains what the lake is, what you can do there, how a shikara ride and a houseboat stay work, how the seasons change it, and how we fit it into a trip. It is the hub for our pages on houseboats, shikara rides and the hotels around the water.
Dal Lake lies on the eastern side of Srinagar below the Zabarwan hills. The city runs along its shore on Boulevard Road, where hotels, restaurants and the boat ghats stand, and the Mughal gardens climb the slopes on the far side. The lake is a set of basins joined by channels. It holds houseboats, floating gardens where vegetables are grown on rafts of weed and soil, and small islands, including Char Chinar. A narrow channel leads to the smaller Nigeen Lake, which is quieter; see our Nigeen Lake houseboats page.
Everything on the water is reached by shikara, the long wooden boat with a canopy and cushions. Our Srinagar guide places the lake within the wider city.
| Experience | What it is | Time it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard shikara ride | A paddled loop past houseboats, floating gardens and lotus beds | One to two hours |
| Sunrise ride | A cool, quiet ride to see the early floating vegetable market | Early morning; the market's hours change with the season |
| Sunset ride | The most popular ride, when the light turns gold over the hills | One to two hours, late afternoon |
| Houseboat stay | A night in a carved wooden boat, with meals on board | One night or more |
| Char Chinar and lake visits | Stops at the island and in the quieter channels | An extended shikara ride |
| Boulevard walk | A walk along the shore with the mountains across the water | An hour or two, on foot |
Our shikara page lists standard rides of one to two hours, sunset rides, full-day lake exploration with lunch and special-occasion rides. A standard boat carries about four to six people, and life jackets are available on request for children and non-swimmers. Our Kashmir valley packages include a one-hour shikara ride.
A houseboat is the traditional stay, with walnut-carved rooms, a dining room, a deck and a shikara to take you ashore. A hotel is easier, with road access and, in many cases, heating that is more dependable in winter. Many guests do both: a night on the water and the rest of the trip in a hotel.
Our houseboats in Srinagar guide covers our six houseboats and what to ask before you pay, our Dal Lake houseboat page describes a stay, and houseboat or hotel helps you decide. For lake-view hotels, see Taj Dal View and The LaLiT Grand Palace, and for the full range, our Srinagar hotel booking page.
| Season | What the lake is like | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | Blossom on the shore, cold mornings and the tulip garden on the hill above | Pack layers; evenings on the water are cold |
| Summer (June to August) | Green banks, lotus in the shallows and the warmest days; the busiest weeks | Book early and ride at sunrise or sunset to avoid the midday sun |
| Autumn (September to November) | Clear air and chinar leaves turning red | A calm, photogenic time; nights cool quickly |
| Winter (December to February) | Mist at dawn, a frozen edge in cold spells and snow on the hills | Ask about heating, hot water and whether rides are shorter |
For longer detail, see our month-by-month Kashmir guide guide and, for the cold months, Kashmir in December and Kashmir in January.
We usually place the lake on the first or last Srinagar day, so that a houseboat night frames the trip: a shikara ride and a quiet evening on arrival, or a slow final night before the flight. The gardens go in the morning, when the light is soft. Our packages put a houseboat night in each of these valley itineraries, with a one-hour shikara ride, daily breakfast and dinner and Srinagar airport pickup and drop; all figures are per person, twin sharing, ex-Srinagar.

A standard ride is one to two hours, as our shikara page describes. Longer rides can include stops at the floating market or Char Chinar, and a full-day lake exploration with lunch is also possible. Our Kashmir valley packages include a one-hour shikara ride.
Sunset is the most popular, with golden light over the hills, and sunrise is the calmest and shows the early floating market. Midday is the least pleasant in summer, when the sun is strong. Evenings are cold in spring, autumn and winter, so carry a jacket.
Yes, on a houseboat, which is a moored wooden boat run as a small hotel, or in a hotel on the shore with lake views. A houseboat stay includes meals on board and a shikara to take you ashore. Our houseboat guide explains what to ask before you pay.
Yes, for the quiet, the mist and the snow on the hills, but it is cold. Parts of the lake can freeze at the edges in severe spells, and houseboats need dependable heating. Ask about heating, hot water and power backup, or choose a heated hotel on the shore.
A day is enough to see it, and a night on a houseboat makes it a stay. Most guests ride a shikara, visit the Mughal gardens and spend one night on the water, then go on to Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonmarg. Add a spare day if the weather turns.
Usually yes, with care. Life jackets are available on request for children and non-swimmers, and the ghat steps and boarding need a steady hand. Tell us if anyone has trouble with steps or balance, and we plan the ghat and the length of the ride accordingly.
Dal is larger and livelier, close to the Boulevard and the main sights. Nigeen is smaller and quieter, with fewer boats, and farther from the busiest stretch. Our Nigeen Lake houseboats page compares them and explains how we confirm the lake and ghat for your stay.
