What is Kokernag?
Kokernag is the name of both a small town and the spring beside it. Cold, clear water rises from the ground at the foot of a wooded hill, spreads into channels and pools and runs on into the streams of the Anantnag valley. A garden has been laid out around the spring, with lawns, flower beds and shaded paths, and a trout farm stands nearby. The place has the slow pace of a family picnic.
How do you get to Kokernag from Srinagar?
The road runs south on the main highway to Anantnag, then turns east towards the hills. Our Kashmir distance chart gives roughly 70 to 85 km and two to two and a half hours, depending on the route and the traffic. A sedan is fine in good weather. For a group, ask us about the right vehicle through our Kashmir taxi service page.
| Leg | Distance and time | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar to Anantnag | The valley highway, most of the journey | Pass orchards and, in season, saffron fields |
| Anantnag to Kokernag | A smaller road into the foothills | Slower after rain; roadside stalls and fruit sellers |
| At the garden | Two to three hours | Flat paths, easy for children and older travellers |
What is there to do at Kokernag?
- Walk the garden paths, see the spring come out of the ground and listen to the water.
- Watch the trout in the farm's tanks, and ask staff what visitors may see.
- Picnic on the lawns in the shade. Food stalls are few, so carry lunch and water.
- Take photographs in the morning, when the light is soft and the paths are quiet.
- Drive on to Daksum and Sinthan Top in the warm months if the road is open, for forest views.
- Ask us about fishing. Angling in Kashmir is controlled by the fisheries department, so do not pack a rod without checking.
Can you combine Kokernag with other gardens?
Yes. Kokernag sits in a part of south Kashmir known for its springs and old gardens, and the same district also holds the Mughal-era gardens at Achabal and Verinag. You can see two of them in a long day. Our Mughal gardens guide covers the gardens in Srinagar.
| Place | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Kokernag | A spring, a landscaped garden and a trout farm | A slow, shaded day |
| Achabal | A Mughal-era garden with water channels and terraces | History and symmetry |
| Verinag | A spring and garden that is a Mughal-era site | A calm half-hour by the water |
| Aharbal | A forest waterfall on another road in south Kashmir | A separate day for water and shade |
When should you go to Kokernag?
| Season | What to expect | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Green lawns, blossom and cool days | Rain can make the road and paths muddy |
| Summer | Shade and cool spring water while the valley is warm | Busy at weekends and holidays |
| Autumn | Clear air and golden leaves | Short days; start early |
| Winter | Cold, and at times snow on the roads beyond | We do not plan day trips here in snow weeks |
Where should you stay?
Most visitors make Kokernag a day trip from Srinagar, where Dal Lake houseboats and hotels are based. A few simple lodges and tourist huts exist near the garden, with basic comfort, and you should book ahead if you want a night there. Our Hotels in Kashmir page lets you ask for options and current rates, and our Srinagar guide describes the base.
Where does Kokernag fit in a Kashmir trip?
It is not part of a standard package, but you can ask us to add it as a day. It suits a trip with a spare day, such as the 5N/6D Kashmir Explorer from Rs 15,900 or the 4N/5D Kashmir Classic from Rs 13,800, both per person on twin sharing. To compare day trips, read our hidden gems guide. If you prefer meadows to gardens, see Doodhpathri.
What does a day at Kokernag look like?
- Leave Srinagar after an early breakfast, with lunch, water and a light jacket.
- Stop in Anantnag for tea or fruit, then reach the garden by late morning.
- Walk the paths, see the spring and the trout farm, and picnic in the shade.
- Visit Achabal on the way back if time and light allow, and be in Srinagar before dark.
What should you know about access and safety?
- Tourist sites in the valley, Kokernag among them, have been closed by order at times in recent years and reopened later. Our safety guide keeps the dated picture, and we check the position for your dates.
- Do not assume the spring water is fit to drink. Carry bottled water.
- Paths and stones near the water are slippery. Keep children close, and do not wade into the channels.
- Carry cash, because stalls and ATMs are few, and take your litter away with you.
Send your dates and group size through our contact page, and we confirm the road and access before you pay.
Questions travellers ask
How far is Kokernag from Srinagar?
Roughly 70 to 85 km, which our distance chart puts at two to two and a half hours by road, via Anantnag. Rain and traffic can add time. We suggest an early start so that the drive back is finished before dark.
What is Kokernag known for?
A cold, clear freshwater spring with a landscaped garden around it, shaded paths and a trout farm nearby. It is a calm picnic spot rather than a place of big sights, and it suits families and older travellers who prefer a flat, easy walk.
When is the right time to visit Kokernag?
Roughly April to October. Spring brings green lawns and blossom, summer offers shade and cool water, and autumn brings clear air and gold leaves. Winter is cold and the road can be affected by snow. Tell us your dates and we say honestly what to expect.
Can I drink the water from the Kokernag spring?
We do not advise it. The water looks clear and is very cold, but we cannot vouch for it, and a stomach upset can spoil a trip. Carry bottled water, and enjoy the spring by looking and listening.
Is one day enough for Kokernag?
Yes. The garden takes two to three hours, and the drive is the larger part of the day. If you add Achabal or Verinag, plan a full day. Most visitors return to Srinagar the same evening.
Is Kokernag open to tourists now?
Tourist sites in the valley, Kokernag among them, have been closed by order at times and reopened later. We cannot promise the position for a future date, so we check it before you pay and tell you in writing.
