How do you get to Gulmarg from Srinagar?
The road runs west from Srinagar through Tangmarg, the last town at the foot of the climb, and then up through pine forest to the meadow. Distances in different sources vary by a few kilometres, so treat the figure as rough; our distance chart explains why time matters more than kilometres in the mountains.

What is there to do in Gulmarg?

Where should you stay in Gulmarg?
Stay near the gondola base and meadow for early rides and short walks, or lower down at Tangmarg for a cheaper room and a short drive. Check heating, hot water, meals and the road in snow before you check the photographs. How long should you spend in Gulmarg?
A day trip works for most visitors and fits inside a Srinagar-based plan, such as the 3N/4D Kashmir quick getaway. Stay a night if you want the first gondola slot without a drive first, a walk on the meadow in the early light, or a spare morning in case the upper stage is closed by wind or cloud.
What does a one-day plan from Srinagar look like?
- Leave Srinagar early, with a booked gondola slot and warm layers.
- Drive via Tangmarg, about 1.5 to 2 hours in dry weather.
- Ride the first stage, and decide there whether to continue, depending on the wind and cloud.
- Walk or ride a pony on the meadow.
- Have lunch at a hotel or cafe in the resort, and warm up.
- Start back by mid-afternoon so you reach Srinagar before dark.
What should you know about safety, access and altitude?
- No permit is needed for Gulmarg, but carry government photo ID; see our permits and ID guide.
- The upper stage of the gondola is much higher than the town. Travellers with heart or lung conditions, or who are unsure about altitude, should ask a doctor before booking it.
- Snow, ice and wind can close the gondola or slow the road. We plan a spare morning where we can.

How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar and how long does the drive take?
Gulmarg is roughly 50 to 60 km from Srinagar, depending on the source, and the drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours in dry weather. In snow it can take longer, and chains are needed on the climb from Tangmarg. We confirm the road on the morning of your trip.
Is one day enough for Gulmarg?
One day is enough for the gondola and a meadow walk, if you start early. A night is worth it if you want the first gondola slot without a drive first, a quieter meadow in the early light, or a spare morning in case the weather closes the upper stage.
When does it snow in Gulmarg?
Snow usually covers the meadow from winter into early spring, but amounts vary by year and nobody can promise snow for a given week. If snow is your reason for going, plan for December to March and add a spare day. We explain the odds honestly when you enquire.
Do I need to book the gondola in advance?

Do I need a permit to visit Gulmarg?

Is Gulmarg suitable for children and older travellers?

Can beginners ski in Gulmarg?
