Deciding when to visit Gulmarg depends entirely on what you want to see and do. The Meadow of Flowers wears vastly different moods across the year — and each season has its loyalists.
Winter (December to March) — Ski Season
This is Gulmarg at its most famous. The meadow is buried under 3–5 metres of powder snow, and the Apharwat Peak becomes a playground for skiers from around the world. December sees the first serious snowfall; January and February are the deepest months. The Gulmarg Gondola runs to Phase 2 (3,980 m) when weather permits, offering panoramic views of Nanga Parbat. Temperatures range from −8°C to −2°C. Pack serious thermals, insulated boots, and ski gear. This is also the most expensive season — book accommodation at least 2–3 months ahead.
Spring (April to May) — Transition Season
Snow begins to melt, and the meadow slowly reveals patches of green. It is a quiet, in-between period. The gondola runs but Phase 2 is often closed due to residual snow and wind. Temperatures are 2°C–10°C. Fewer tourists mean lower prices and uncrowded slopes. The landscape is a mix of snow patches and emerging grass — not the iconic green of summer, but beautiful in a raw, transitional way.
Summer (June to early September) — Meadow Season
This is when Gulmarg lives up to its name — a meadow of flowers. Wild iris, gentian, and daisies carpet the valley. Temperatures are a pleasant 12°C–22°C. The gondola runs reliably, horse-riding is in full swing, and the Gulmarg Golf Course — the highest green golf course in the world — opens for business. This is the best time for non-skiers, families, and photographers. Evenings are cool (8°C–12°C), so a light jacket is essential.
Autumn (mid-September to November) — Golden Season
The crowds thin out, the air turns crisp, and the meadow takes on a golden hue. The gondola operates, but Phase 2 may close sporadically due to early snow. Temperatures range from 0°C to 15°C. This is a wonderful time for photographers and couples seeking solitude. The snow line creeps lower each week, and by November, the first flakes begin to fall.
Our Recommendation
For first-timers, June to September is the safest bet — reliable weather, full gondola access, and the full Gulmarg experience. For skiers, January–February is non-negotiable. For budget travellers, April–May and October–November offer good value with fewer crowds.
