Gulmarg, the Meadow of Flowers, offers some of Kashmir’s most distinctive accommodation. Whether you come for the skiing, the gondola, or the summer meadows, here’s where to stay.
The Flagship: Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa
Perched at 8,800 feet, The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa is Gulmarg’s flagship property. This 5-star ski-in/ski-out resort features an L’Occitane spa, fireplace suites, gourmet dining, and direct access to the slopes. It is one of Asia’s higher-altitude ski resorts and consistently rated among India’s best mountain hotels.
Heritage & Character
Highlands Park is a heritage hotel wrapped in deodar and pine forests — ideal for travellers who value character over star ratings. The Vintage Gulmarg offers boutique alpine charm with vintage decor and personalised service. Both properties capture Gulmarg’s old-world magic.
Meadow-Front Hotels
Hotel Hilltop lives up to its name with panoramic views of the Gulmarg meadow. Grand Mumtaz Resorts Gulmarg offers comfortable resort-style accommodation close to the gondola base. Royal Park Hotel and The Rosewood provide cozy stays surrounded by Gulmarg’s natural beauty.
Budget & Value
Shaw Inn, Pine Palace Resort, and Kolahoi Green Heights offer clean comfortable stays at budget-friendly prices. Gulmarg Ski Hill Resort caters specifically to skiers with equipment rental and slope access.
Seasonal Tips
Book at least 2-3 months in advance for December-February ski season. Summer (June-August) is also popular. The Khyber often sells out months ahead for peak season. Contact us for real-time availability and clear rates.
How to choose where to stay in Gulmarg
Gulmarg is small. One meadow, one main road and a handful of hotels spread around it, so the choice is less about neighbourhoods than about what you want from the stay. A skier wants to be on the slope, a couple wants a view and a fire, a family wants space and a budget traveller wants a clean room and a warm bed. Ask yourself which of those you are, and the list below shortens quickly.
The flagship: ski-in, ski-out and spa
The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa is Gulmarg's best-known property, a five-star resort high on the meadow with direct access to the slopes, fireplace suites, a spa and gourmet dining. It suits skiers and anyone who wants the full resort experience, and it is the hotel that sells out first in the ski season. Our Gulmarg ski packages page explains how a ski trip is usually put together.
Heritage and boutique stays
Highlands Park is a heritage hotel among deodar and pine, for travellers who value character over a star rating. The Vintage Gulmarg is a boutique stay with vintage decor and personal service. These are quieter and more atmospheric than the large resorts, and they work well for couples and for guests who like a slower trip.
Meadow-front hotels near the gondola
Hotel Hilltop has views over the meadow, Grand Mumtaz Resorts Gulmarg is a resort-style hotel close to the gondola base and Royal Park Hotel and The Rosewood are cosy stays among the pines. Being near the meadow and the gondola saves a walk in the cold, which matters more than it sounds in winter.
Budget and value
Shaw Inn, Pine Palace Resort and Kolahoi Green Heights are clean, comfortable and priced for value, and Gulmarg Ski Hill Resort caters to skiers with equipment rental and slope access. If you want to save more, consider staying in Tangmarg, the small town below Gulmarg, and driving up for the day; our Gulmarg budget trip guide weighs that trade-off.
When to book and what to ask
- For December to February, book two to three months ahead; the best rooms go first.
- Summer, June to August, is also busy.
- Ask whether heating is included, how far the room is from the gondola base and whether meals are served on site.
- Ask for the property's own cancellation terms in writing.
What a Gulmarg room is really like in winter
At this altitude the room matters as much as the view. Winter nights are well below freezing, so check how the room is heated: a fireplace, a room heater or central heating are very different experiences, and a hotel that stands on a ridge will feel the wind. Ask whether hot water is reliable, whether the bathroom is attached and whether power cuts are covered by a generator. A good Gulmarg hotel answers these without hesitating, and tells you honestly if the weather can affect the road to the door.
Meals are usually served on site, often as a set menu, because there is little else open in the evening in winter. If you have dietary needs, tell the hotel in advance. In summer the same hotels feel entirely different: the doors open to the meadow, evenings are cool and the terrace is the best seat in the house.
Getting around once you are there
Gulmarg is compact, but the cold and the snow change how far you want to walk. The gondola base, the meadow and the main shops are close together, and hotels on the far side of the meadow may offer a pickup. In snow, horses and sledges are the local transport, and in summer a walk across the meadow is the pleasure. If you plan to ski, ask the hotel whether it stores equipment and whether it can arrange lessons. Our Gulmarg gondola guide explains how the lift fits into a day.
A sample two-night stay
- Day 1: arrive from Srinagar in the morning, check in, walk the meadow and spend the afternoon at the lower gondola station. Early dinner and an early night.
- Day 2: ride the gondola early when the sky is clear, spend the middle of the day on the slopes or the meadow and return before the afternoon cloud. Hot soup, a warm room and an unhurried evening.
- Day 3: breakfast, a short walk to the church or a ride, and the drive back to Srinagar in daylight.
Two nights is the minimum that lets you see Gulmarg properly; one night leaves too little margin when the weather turns.
How we help
We book Gulmarg hotels as part of a Kashmir plan and can tell you what is open and available for your dates. See hotel booking in Gulmarg for how that works, and the Gulmarg destination guide for what to do once you are there.
