Choose the place before the hotel
A Kashmir trip is usually a loop through three or four places, and each has a different kind of stay. Srinagar is the city, with lake, gardens and houseboats. Gulmarg is the high meadow and ski town. Pahalgam is the river valley. Sonmarg is the glacier meadow on the road to Ladakh. Because the places are different, the hotels are different too, and the best one is the one that suits what you will do in that place. Decide how many nights each place deserves, then pick the stay.

What to check before you book anywhere
Ask how the room is heated, whether hot water is reliable, how far the hotel is from the main sight, what meals are included and what the cancellation terms are. In hill places, ask about the road in winter and in heavy rain. A good hotel answers these questions plainly, and we will help you ask them.
A simple way to choose
If you are unsure, start from the trip. A honeymoon wants a lake or a river and a quiet room; a family wants space, meals and a short drive; a ski trip wants the slope; a road trip to Ladakh wants a good last night in Srinagar and a comfortable first night in Sonmarg or Kargil. Write down the one or two things that matter most, such as a view, a spa, a short transfer or a budget, and let those decide. The rest is detail, and we can help you with it.
Seasonal differences you should know
Hotels in the hills change with the season. In summer, rooms are cooler and views are the point; in winter, heating, hot water and a short walk to the lift matter more than the star rating. Some properties close for the coldest months, and some restaurants stop serving. Ask what is open on your dates, not only what the website shows, and ask about the road: after heavy snow or rain, the transfer can take much longer than usual.

Should I stay on a houseboat or in a hotel?
A houseboat is an experience, with carved wood and a lake setting, and simpler facilities. A hotel is easier for comfort. Many travellers do one night of each.
When should I book Kashmir hotels?
Book early for May to August and for winter weekends in Gulmarg, when the best properties fill first. Shoulder months are easier, and we can check availability on your dates.
Are hotels open in winter?
Srinagar and Gulmarg hotels are open, but Sonmarg is accessible mainly from May to November and some Pahalgam properties close or limit services in winter.
