Sonamarg, the Meadow of Gold, is Kashmir’s gateway to Ladakh and home to the magnificent Thajiwas Glacier. Accommodation here ranges from modern resorts to charming mountain lodges.
Mid-Range Comfort
Hotel Village Walk offers easy access to Sonamarg’s trekking trails and glacier viewpoints. The Villa Himalaya provides cozy mountain villa accommodation with breathtaking Himalayan vistas. Rah Villas offers peaceful villa stays surrounded by alpine scenery.
Budget-Friendly Stays
Hotel Snow Land Sonamarg is a reliable budget option with glacier views and essential amenities. Glacier Heights offers elevated panoramic vistas at affordable rates. Nature’s Nest provides a rustic eco-stay experience for travellers who want to connect with Sonamarg’s wilderness.
Important Notes
Sonamarg is accessible only from May to November (road closes in winter). Book well in advance for the peak summer season (June-August). All properties offer bonfire arrangements in the evenings. Contact TDI Holiday Ventures for exclusive rates and instant booking confirmation.
Do you need to stay overnight
Sonmarg is two to three hours from Srinagar, and many travellers see it as a day trip: glacier road, meadow, lunch, return. An overnight stay gives you the quiet of the evening and the early morning, when the meadow is empty and the light is soft, and it breaks up the road to Ladakh if you are going on. Stay the night if you want to walk, to see the sunrise, or if you are continuing to Kargil and Leh the next day; otherwise a day trip is simpler.
Mid-range villas and hotels
Hotel Village Walk is placed for access to trails and viewpoints. The Villa Himalaya offers a mountain-villa feel, and Rah Villas gives a quieter, home-like stay. These properties are popular with families and with couples who want space and a view without a resort price.
Budget lodges
Hotel Snow Land Sonamarg, Glacier Heights and Nature's Nest are examples of simpler stays, with essentials, mountain views and a more rustic feel. They suit groups, solo travellers and anyone who plans to be outdoors most of the day. Ask about heating, hot water and meals, which vary.
Season and road
The road to Sonmarg is open mainly from May to November. In winter heavy snow closes it, and most properties shut. In peak summer, from June to August, rooms go early. Weather in the mountains can change quickly, with rain and landslides occasionally closing the road for hours, so allow margin if you have a connection. We confirm the road status for your dates.
What to do from your hotel
- Walk to the meadow at dawn, when it is quiet.
- Ride a pony towards the glacier viewpoint; agree the price before you start.
- Picnic by the river, with food you carry or buy.
- Take an evening bonfire where offered, and watch the stars.
- Continue next day over the Zoji La towards Kargil and Leh if you are heading to Ladakh.
Who should choose Sonmarg
Sonmarg suits travellers who like mountains more than towns: families who enjoy a stream and a snowfield, photographers, walkers and anyone breaking the road to Ladakh. It is less suited to those who want nightlife, shopping or a long list of sights. Our Sonmarg destination page describes the place.
What the rooms and the nights are like
Sonmarg is high and its nights are cold even in July. Expect a warm blanket rather than air conditioning, simple furnishings and a window that looks at the mountains. Hot water may be on a schedule, and power cuts happen; ask the hotel about generators and heaters. Meals are usually fixed-menu and simple, with local dishes and good tea, and a bonfire in the evening is a pleasure in the cold. Pack a warm layer, a torch and patience, and the nights are among the best parts of the trip.
Getting to your hotel
The road from Srinagar climbs through the Sindh valley to the meadow and takes about two to three hours in normal conditions. After rain or landslide, it can take much longer, and convoys and checks may slow the road. Leave early, travel in daylight and keep a margin if you have a flight. If you are heading on to Ladakh the next day, the early morning start across the Zoji La is a reason to sleep in Sonmarg, and our Srinagar to Leh Tempo Traveller page explains the road.
Money and practical matters
Carry cash for ponies, tea and small purchases, because cards and ATMs are unreliable in the meadow. Ask your hotel to arrange ponies and guides at a fair rate and agree prices first. Mobile signal can be weak, so share your plans and a contact number with someone, and keep your phone charged. Respect the rubbish rules at the meadow, take your waste with you and keep the stream clean.

A word on expectations
Sonmarg is a mountain meadow, not a resort town. There are few shops, no nightlife and a simple choice of restaurants, and the point is the setting. Visitors who expect a busy tourist centre are disappointed; those who come for the cold air, the river and the glacier road are not. Plan one or two activities each day and leave the rest of the time open, and the stay will feel right.
Families do well in the villas, where rooms are bigger and meals are simple and filling. Couples like the resort rooms with a glacier view and a fire in the evening. Groups of friends often take lodges, which are cheaper and more social. Older travellers should ask about steps and distance from the car, as some properties are reached by a short walk on uneven ground, and about heating, which matters at night.
We build Sonmarg into a Kashmir plan, with a day trip or an overnight, and tell you honestly which suits your dates. See the Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg comparison if you are choosing how to divide your days, and our Srinagar to Ladakh taxi guide if you are going further.
Questions travellers ask
When are Sonmarg hotels open?
Mainly from May to November, when the road is open. In winter heavy snow closes the road and most properties shut.
Is it better to stay overnight in Sonmarg or visit for a day?
A day trip is simple. An overnight gives you quiet evenings and mornings, and suits anyone continuing to Ladakh the next day.
Which is the best resort in Sonmarg?
Snowland Resort & Spa and Country Inn & Suites by Radisson are the best-known premium options. Mid-range villas and budget lodges suit smaller budgets.
How early should I book?
For June to August, book as early as you can, because the best rooms go first. The shoulder months of May, September and October are easier.
Do hotels have heating and hot water?
It varies by property. Ask before you book, especially for the cold mornings and for the shoulder months.
