How to choose where to stay in Pahalgam
Pahalgam is a small town strung along the Lidder river, with pine slopes on either side and meadows beyond. Because it is compact, the choice of hotel has little to do with distance and a lot to do with setting: a room that looks onto the river, a resort tucked among the pines, a quiet cottage with its own lawn or a simple hotel close to the market. Decide how much you want the hotel itself to be part of the trip, and the rest follows.
Mid-range resorts and spas
The Chinar Resort & Spa offers traditional Kashmiri architecture with a spa and a swimming pool, and Eden Resorts & Spa is a riverside resort with modern amenities and arrangements such as evening bonfires. These properties give the feel of a resort at a more moderate rate and are popular with couples and families who want to be beside the water.
Budget hotels and cottages
Hotel Heevan is a comfortable mid-range hotel with views of the Lidder. Kolahoi Green Resort is an eco-minded property with a glacier backdrop. For privacy, riverside cottages offer a home-like stay with a lawn and a view of the water, and are a good fit for groups of friends or a family that wants a kitchen-free, quiet base. Check what is included and how far each is from the road, as some cottages are a short walk from where the car stops.
When to come and when to book
April to October is the ideal season: green meadows, a full river and comfortable weather. July and August are busy with Amarnath Yatra traffic, so rooms go early. Winter brings snow and a quiet town, with fewer open restaurants and a few properties closed. Our best time to visit Pahalgam guide explains each season.
What to ask before you book
- Is the room facing the river or the road, and how loud is each?
- How is the room heated, and is hot water available all day?
- Are meals included, and is there a vegetarian choice and a late dinner?
- How far is the car park from the room, and is luggage help available?
- What are the cancellation terms if weather affects the road?
Using Pahalgam as a base
A stay of two or three nights lets you visit the nearby valleys: Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, the base for the Amarnath trek, are all a short drive away. Our Pahalgam itinerary shows how to arrange the days, and the Pahalgam destination guide describes the town itself.
How we help
Families, couples and groups
Families do best in a resort with space and a lawn, where children can play while parents rest, and in a room that sleeps everyone without moving beds. Couples tend to prefer the quieter riverside resorts and cottages, where the room and the view are the main event. Groups of friends often take a cottage or a block of rooms together, which keeps the cost down and the evenings social. Older travellers should ask about steps, distance from the car and heating, because some of the prettiest properties have the longest walk from the road.
Food, noise and the small things
Pahalgam is a quiet town, and most hotels serve meals on site, often with Kashmiri dishes and local trout. Ask about vegetarian options and a late dinner if you arrive late. Riverside rooms are beautiful but the river is audible at night, which many people love and some do not; ask for a room on the quieter side if you are a light sleeper. In summer, check for mosquito screens and in winter for bedding and heating, and carry a torch for power cuts, which happen in mountain towns.
We book Pahalgam hotels as part of a Kashmir plan, and can tell you which properties are open, which are best for your dates and which are better avoided in a given season. See hotel booking in Pahalgam for how that works, and tell us your dates, the number of travellers and the kind of stay you want.
A word on choosing honestly
The most expensive hotel is not always the right one. A family with young children may prefer the space and the lawn of a cottage; a couple on a short trip may value the spa; a group of friends may care most about the price and the river view. Tell us what the trip is for and we suggest accordingly, and we will say plainly if a property is not the best fit for your plan.
