The road leaves Srinagar for Budgam and Chadoora, passes through village and orchard country to Khag, and then climbs through forest to the valley floor. The first stretch is flat and busy, and the last is a narrow hill road where rain, mud and oncoming traffic slow the drive. Published distances differ, so treat the figure as rough. Our Srinagar to Doodhpathri taxi page explains the route and the fare basis.
| Group | Vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two or three travellers | Swift Dzire | Comfortable on the plains; ask about ground clearance if rain is forecast |
| Four to six travellers | Innova or Innova Crysta | Room for a family, luggage and picnic gear |
| A wet or muddy day | An SUV | Better clearance on the last stretch |
There are few facilities. Expect at most a handful of stalls and basic toilets, and patchy signal, so treat it as a picnic day. See our meals guide for how to plan lunch on days like this.
| Months | What to expect | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| April to June | Fresh green meadow, cool air and early flowers | A jacket for the morning; showers are possible |
| July to September | The greenest weeks and picnic season | Rain can make the last stretch muddy; weekends are crowded |
| October to November | Cold, clear days and autumn colour in the trees | Short days, so start early and be back by dusk |
| December to March | Snow, with the hill road often affected | We do not plan this as a day trip unless the road is confirmed that morning |
Our Kashmir in summer guide and Kashmir in winter guide cover the wider seasons.
Most visitors return to Srinagar the same evening, because the meadow has little accommodation and nothing to do after dark. Stay in Srinagar, on a houseboat or in a hotel, and make Doodhpathri a day out. Our Srinagar hotel booking page and houseboats in Srinagar show the options.
Plan a full day with two to three hours at the meadow and the rest on the road. Our 6N/7D Kashmir with Doodhpathri package puts it on its own day inside the wider circuit of Srinagar, Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. If you like the idea of a quiet meadow but want a shorter drive, compare Yusmarg and its taxi page, and read our offbeat Kashmir guide.
Doodhpathri is roughly 40 km from Srinagar, though published figures differ. The drive takes about one and a half to two and a half hours each way, longer on busy days or after rain. The last stretch is a narrow hill road, so we plan for a relaxed pace.
The stream that runs through the valley flows milky-white over limestone and pale rock, which gives the place its name: doodh means milk and pathri means a valley or meadow.
April to November is the usual window. April to June is fresh and cool, July to September is the greenest and busiest, and October to November is cold and clear. From December to March, snow often affects the hill road.
Accommodation at the meadow is very limited, and there is little to do there after dark, so most visitors return to Srinagar the same evening. We suggest a houseboat or hotel in Srinagar and a day trip. Ask us if you want to explore other options.
Yes, with planning. The meadow is gentle and ponies are usually offered in season. The road is long and winding, so travellers who get car sick should sit at the front and start early. Facilities are basic, so carry food, water and a jacket.
Very little: a handful of stalls and no restaurants to plan around. Carry a packed lunch, water and snacks, and ask your hotel to prepare them the evening before. Tell us about dietary needs early so the packed lunch matches.
No special permit is needed, but carry government photo ID, since checkposts are routine on Kashmir roads. Rules for border areas differ. Our permits and ID guide explains them, and we confirm anything that applies to your passport and dates.
