Doodhpathri is the green bowl in the hills that Srinagar people drive to when they want trees, a stream and a picnic without the Gulmarg queues. For a visitor it is a half-day to full-day outing from the city, and a private taxi is the simplest way to do it. This page, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, covers the route, the time it takes, the vehicles that suit, what the fare depends on, and the practical points that decide whether the day is easy: the weather, the last stretch of road, and what to bring.
Roughly 40 km each way. We say roughly because published distances differ by a few kilometres depending on the starting point and the route, and a measured figure depends on where in Srinagar you start. What matters more is the time: plan on about one and a half to two and a half hours each way. The first half is on flat roads through Budgam district, the second is a climb through villages and forest, and the last stretch is the slowest.
| Stretch | What it is like | What slows it down |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar to Budgam and Chadoora | Flat roads through busy towns and farmland | Morning traffic, school hours, market days |
| Chadoora to Khag | A quieter road through villages and orchards, starting to climb | Slow vehicles, cattle, narrow stretches |
| Khag to the meadow | A hill road through forest to the valley floor | Rain, mud, snow patches, oncoming traffic on a narrow road |
| Return | The same road, downhill | Evening traffic into Srinagar, early dusk in cooler months |
The route usually runs through Budgam, Chadoora and Khag, though a driver may choose differently on the day. Leave Srinagar by about 8 or 9 am so you arrive in the late morning, have a few hours at the meadow, and drive back before the light goes.
Our Doodhpathri destination page describes a sprawling emerald meadow where the stream runs milky-white over limestone, in the Pir Panjal. The name means the valley of milk. In practice it is a wide grassy bowl ringed by pine and fir, with a stream running through it, pony and walking trails, and room to sit. It is quiet, cool and green, and it suits a family picnic, a slow couple's day, or a photographer after early light. It is less suited to travellers who want an itinerary full of attractions, as the point of the place is to do very little.
Compare it with the other valley outings from Srinagar. Gulmarg has the gondola and the snow; Pahalgam has the river and the valleys; Sonmarg has the glacier and the high road. Doodhpathri has the quiet. For a second meadow, see our Yusmarg destination page and our Srinagar to Yusmarg taxi page.
Doodhpathri is a seasonal place. It is at its easiest from late spring to autumn, and the hill road can be difficult in snow or heavy rain. We do not give opening dates, because conditions change by year, and a closure or road notice can appear at short notice. We check the conditions for your date before you set out.
| Months | What to expect | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| April to June | Fresh green meadow, cool air, flowers beginning | A jacket for the morning; showers possible |
| July to September | The greenest and busiest weeks; picnic season | Rain can make the last stretch muddy; weekends are crowded |
| October to November | Cold, clear days and autumn colour in the trees | Short days, so start early and be back by dusk |
| December to March | Snow, often with the hill road affected | We do not plan this as a day trip unless the road is confirmed that morning |
Our month-by-month guide puts these months next to the rest of the valley, and our summer guide is a good companion if you travel between June and August.
We do not print a fixed fare on this page, because it is set by the vehicle, the season, the hours you want the driver to wait and whether you return the same day, and these change. We quote on WhatsApp and confirm the fare before you pay. When you compare quotes from different operators, compare what each one includes. Our taxi packages include a dedicated vehicle with an experienced driver, fuel, toll tax and driver allowance, so ask any other operator whether the same is true, plus the hours of waiting, any parking or entry charge at the meadow, and what happens if the road is closed.
One question to ask any operator, including us: can the cab drive all the way to the meadow, or does the last stretch go by a local vehicle or on ponies? At several Kashmir meadows, the last leg is controlled by local operators. We tell you before you pay if that applies here. Our Kashmir taxi service page covers the fleet, and our taxi packages page covers multi-day plans.
| Group | Vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two or three travellers | Swift Dzire sedan | Economical and comfortable on the plains; the hill road is slower, so ask about ground clearance if rain is forecast |
| Four to six travellers | Innova or Innova Crysta | Space for luggage, picnic gear and a family, with more comfort on the climb |
| Seven to twelve travellers | 8-seater or 14-seater tempo traveller | One vehicle for a larger group; confirm the hill road suits the size |
| A rough-weather day | An SUV such as the Scorpio or Fortuner | Better clearance where the road is wet or muddy |
Is it better as a day trip or a night? Most visitors do it as a day trip. Our 6N/7D Kashmir with Doodhpathri package takes the same view, placing Doodhpathri as a day out from Srinagar between the Sonmarg trip and Gulmarg, at ₹18,200 per person for two. Its listing carries a July to September 2026 validity note, so ask for the rate on your dates. A night near the meadow is possible in some seasons, but only if the road is confirmed; ask us before planning on it.
Please take your rubbish back with you, keep out of the stream where signs ask it, and agree pony prices before you mount. Our packing list has the longer version for a Kashmir trip.
Send your hotel, your date, the number of travellers and the vehicle you prefer through our contact page. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. The same cab can cover other trips on a multi-day plan; see our road pages for Yusmarg, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, and our Srinagar airport taxi page for the airport run. If you would rather have the whole trip planned, start with our Kashmir tour packages.

Roughly 40 km each way, though published figures differ by a few kilometres depending on the starting point and the route. The time matters more than the distance: plan on about one and a half to two and a half hours each way, and longer on busy days or after rain. We confirm the route with the driver on the day.
About one and a half to two and a half hours each way. The plains section through Budgam is quick, and the climb through Khag and the forest is slow. Traffic, rain, mud or snow can add time. We suggest leaving Srinagar by 8 or 9 am so you have a few hours at the meadow.
The fare depends on the vehicle, the season, how long the driver waits and whether you return the same day, so we do not print one figure. We quote on WhatsApp and confirm before you pay. Ask what the price includes: fuel, toll, driver allowance, waiting hours and any parking or entry charge at the meadow.
We do not usually advise it. Both are in Budgam district, but each is a half to a full day with a slow hill road, and the day would be mostly driving. Pick one for a day trip, or give each its own day. Our Yusmarg destination page describes the second meadow.
Late spring to autumn is the easy season, with April to June fresh and green, July to September greenest and busiest, and October to November cold and clear. Winter brings snow, and the hill road can be affected. We check the road for your date before you travel, and we do not promise access.
For children, yes: it is a meadow with a stream, and they enjoy it. For older travellers, the drive is long and the last stretch is rough, though the meadow itself is gentle. Bring warm layers, avoid wet days, and tell us if anyone has mobility or health needs, so we shape the day.
It depends on the vehicle, the weather and the local arrangements. At several Kashmir meadows, the last leg is run by local operators or ponies. We tell you before you pay whether that applies here, and what it adds. If the road is wet, an SUV is the safer choice.
Facilities are basic, with simple stalls and short menus, and they can be crowded on summer weekends. We suggest carrying water and snacks, and a picnic if you like. Our packages exclude lunches, which is why we keep that time free in the plan.
