This is the December briefing we would want before booking, written by the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar. Temperatures come from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Every road and sight below carries the date it was reported, and where sources disagree we give the range. We last checked on 25 October 2026, so read the road and gondola rows as the pattern of recent winters. We check the latest MeT outlook, road advisories and gondola status when you book and again in the week you travel; we cannot promise them for dates further out.

How cold is Kashmir in December, place by place?

IMD's 1991–2020 normals are thirty-year averages, so any single day can sit several degrees either side. The table shows the mean daytime high, the mean night low, the average rainfall and the average number of rainy days for December. IMD's table gives total rainfall in millimetres and a count of rainy days. It does not report snow depth, and IMD does not say whether the millimetres include melted snow, so read them as a guide to how wet a month is, not how deep the snow lies.

PlaceMean highMean lowRainfallRainy days
Srinagar9.9 °C−1.6 °C27 mm2.6
Pahalgam7.9 °C−4.2 °C60 mm3.9
Gulmarg4.6 °C−4.8 °C74 mm4.7
Jammu, for comparison21.1 °C8.7 °C22 mm1.5

IMD's table has no Sonmarg station, so we do not quote a normal for it. Press readings show it is colder than Srinagar: Sonmarg touched −7.3 °C in the last week of December 2025, against −2.2 °C in Srinagar on the same night. Averages also hide the swing between a clear night and a cloudy one. These are the minimums we found reported:

NightReadingsSource
4 Dec 2025Srinagar −4.0 °C, Pahalgam −4.8 °C, Gulmarg −1.0 °C; Zojila Pass −17.0 °CETV Bharat, 4 Dec 2025
21 Dec 2025Srinagar +4.0 °C under cloud and rain, about 6 °C above normal; Gulmarg −1.5 °CGreater Kashmir, 21 Dec 2025
24–25 Dec 2025Gulmarg −5.4 °C, Pahalgam −4.4 °C, Srinagar −2.2 °C, Sonmarg −7.3 °C (all for the night of 24–25 Dec, reported on 25 Dec)Kashmir Observer, 25 Dec 2025
Reported 24 Dec 2024Srinagar −6.6 °C; Shopian −8.8 °CAll India Radio, 24 Dec 2024

For packing, that means nights of roughly −1 °C to −7 °C in Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam, and a Srinagar that swings between about −7 °C and +4 °C with the cloud. Our older winter pages say Gulmarg nights can reach −10 °C. That is plausible later in the season, since IMD's January mean low at Gulmarg is −7.7 °C, but the December readings we found were milder.

Will it snow in Kashmir in December?

Sometimes, and not on a timetable. Snow reaches the valley with western disturbances, and December has few of them: IMD's averages are 2.6 rainy days in Srinagar, 3.9 in Pahalgam and 4.7 in Gulmarg. January is wetter by more than a factor of two (Gulmarg 161 mm against 74 mm, Pahalgam 136 mm against 60 mm, Srinagar 64 mm against 27 mm). If snow on the ground is the whole point of your trip, December is the early edge of the season, not the middle of it.

The last three winters show how uneven the start can be:

WinterWhat the start of winter looked likeSource
2023–24A dry start. The MeT office put the rainfall deficit at about 75 per cent for December and early January (WION, 9 Jan 2024). By 19 January Gulmarg had received only about 15 cm of snow, where The National says it typically gets more than a metre from November. An environmental-science professor quoted there said half of Chillai Kalan had passed with no rain or snow and put the precipitation shortfall at 20 to 30 per cent, a different measure from MeT's.The National, 19 Jan 2024; WION, 9 Jan 2024
2024–25Snow came at the end of the month. Fresh snow was reported at Sonmarg by 24 December, and Srinagar had its first snow of the winter on 27 December (2 inches), with 10 to 12 inches at Peer Ki Gali, Sinthan Top and Baltal. Six flights from Srinagar were cancelled that day.All India Radio, 24 and 27 Dec 2024; ETV Bharat, 27 Dec 2024
2025–26A cold, low-precipitation start: Kashmir's rainfall from 1 October to 25 December ran 43.9 per cent below normal (57.9 mm against 103.2 mm). On 21 December Gulmarg got up to 5 inches of snow and Sonmarg 4 inches while Srinagar had rain. Srinagar's heaviest snow of that winter so far came on 23 January 2026.Greater Kashmir, 21 Dec 2025; Kashmir Observer, 25 Dec 2025; Skymet, 23 Jan 2026

Our reading: Gulmarg and Sonmarg are the realistic places for December snow, and snow in Srinagar before the last days of the month is the exception, not the plan. We found no data that ranks one December week above another, so we will not name a lucky week. Our Gulmarg snowfall guide covers the wider season and our Kashmir in winter guide covers the months after December. Where to look first:

  • Gulmarg is both the wettest (74 mm, against Pahalgam 60 mm and Srinagar 27 mm) and the coldest (mean high 4.6 °C) of the three Kashmir stations in IMD's table, so it is the likeliest of the three to see snow, although IMD's table does not measure snow. See our Gulmarg destination guide.
  • Sonmarg has no IMD normal, so we cannot rank it against the other three. It had snow in the reports we found for 21 December 2025 (4 inches) and 1 January 2026 (4 to 8 inches on the Sonmarg and Zojila axis) (Greater Kashmir; ETV Bharat). See our Sonmarg guide.
  • Pahalgam averages 60 mm of rainfall in December, about four rainy days. See our Pahalgam guide.
  • Srinagar is the driest of the three IMD stations here (27 mm, against Pahalgam 60 mm and Gulmarg 74 mm). On 21 December 2025 it had rain while Gulmarg had snow. See our Srinagar guide.

Is December a good time to visit Kashmir?

It is a good time if you come for cold, clear air, a quieter lake and the chance of snow in Gulmarg and Sonmarg. It is a poor time if you come for gardens in bloom, tulips, long daylight or road trips to Gurez and Ladakh. The places to visit in December, in the order we would plan them:

PlaceWorth it in December?Why
GulmargYes, the main reason to comeThe wettest of the three IMD stations we quote (74 mm), with the gondola, sledging and, per our skiing guide, a ski season that starts in mid-December if there is enough snow. Snow is possible, not certain.
SrinagarYes, as your baseDays average 9.9 °C. The lake, the Mughal Gardens, the old town and the food do not depend on snow.
SonmargYes, as a day tripSnow was reported on 21 December 2025 and 1 January 2026. The tunnel keeps it reachable, but the road can close on a heavy-snow day.
PahalgamYes, between Gulmarg and SrinagarIMD averages 60 mm of rainfall in December. Aru and Betaab depend on snow and road conditions on the day.
Gurez, the Mughal Road, the Srinagar–Leh roadNoEach closed after snow in December 2024 or 2025 (see the table below).
Tulip gardenNoIt opens in March.

Early December or the last week of December: what changes?

Less than brochures suggest. Daylight is nearly the same all month: Srinagar's sunrise moves from 7:18 am on 1 December to 7:36 am on 31 December, sunset from 5:21 pm to 5:31 pm, and the shortest day is 22 December with about 9 hours 53 minutes of light. Chillai Kalan, the traditional 40-day cold spell, starts on 21 December. Greater Kashmir (21 Dec 2025) gives 29 January as the end, which is day 40 if 21 December is day one. ETV Bharat (24 Dec 2024) gives 30 January and Kashmir Life (20 Dec 2023) gives 31 January, so the sources differ by up to two days.

What does change is the crowd. Our Gulmarg skiing guide puts the ski season at mid-December to mid-March, snow permitting, and says late December and early January bring the heaviest tourist traffic, and our Gulmarg gondola guide warns of peak-season queues of more than two hours. If you want shorter queues and an easier choice of rooms, the first half of December should be calmer. If you want the festive atmosphere, plan for 24 December to 2 January and book early.

What is open and what is closed in December?

The status of the places travellers ask about, with the dated report behind each. Recent winters are the most useful guide we have, and roads can open or close within hours of snow.

Sight or roadWhat December usually looks likeEvidence and date
Gulmarg gondolaRuns through winter, weather permitting. Phase 1 to Kongdoori usually runs more often than Phase 2 to Apharwat, which is weather-dependent and often stops in high wind (our gondola guide). It was shut from 25 May 2026 after a technical fault and reopened on 25 June 2026, when the Chief Minister rode Phase 1. The reports we found do not say whether Phase 2 reopened the same day. It was busy through the first five days of January 2026.Kashmir Life, 9 Jun 2026; Kashmir Observer, 25 Jun 2026; Kashmir Convener, 5 Jan 2026
Sonmarg and the Srinagar–Sonmarg roadReachable in winter. The Sonamarg Tunnel (the main tunnel is 6.4 km and the whole project about 12 km, per the Press Information Bureau), opened on 13 January 2025, bypasses the avalanche-prone stretch that residents told The Tribune used to cut Sonmarg off for three to four months a year. The Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri road was still closed temporarily after snow on 22 December 2025 and 1 January 2026, so a heavy-snow day can still cancel the trip.PIB, 13 Jan 2025; The Tribune, 14 Jan 2025; Kashmir Observer, 22 Dec 2025; ETV Bharat, 1 Jan 2026
Zojila Pass and the Srinagar–Leh roadNot a December plan. The pass was closed to vehicles on 21 December 2025, and the highway shut again for four days before reopening on 2 January 2026 to passenger vehicles from Minamarg towards Sonmarg only, while traffic from Sonmarg towards Kargil stayed suspended. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared snow each time. In March 2026 it closed for four days and reopened on 23 March to light vehicles only.Greater Kashmir, 21 Dec 2025 and 23 Mar 2026; The Right News, 3 Jan 2026
Gurez road (Razdan Pass)Closes with each snowfall at Razdan Top: the Bandipora–Gurez road was shut on 27 December 2024 and on 22 December 2025. How long Gurez stays cut off is disputed. The J&K government's reply to an MLA's question, reported on 28 October 2025, put the closure at no more than 58 days in 2022–23 and said this contradicts claims of about six months. We do not plan Gurez in December. All India Radio, 27 Dec 2024; Kashmir Observer, 22 Dec 2025; Kashmir Convener, 28 Oct 2025
Mughal RoadClosed repeatedly by snow in winter. In 2024–25 it shut after the December snowfall and reopened on 15 April 2025 for one-way light vehicles; it was closed temporarily by snow on 22 December 2025 and 1 January 2026, and shut again for part of the last week of February 2026 after fresh snow, reopening to light vehicles on Friday 27 February. It was open on 23 October 2026, after the season's first light snow at Pir Ki Gali. All India Radio, 27 Dec 2024; Kashmir Ahead, 2025; Kashmir Observer, 22 Dec 2025 and 23 Oct 2026; ETV Bharat, 1 Jan 2026; The Right News, 28 Feb 2026
Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip GardenClosed. It opens only in spring: on 16 March 2026, about ten days earlier than the usual last week of March.Kashmir Observer, 16 Mar 2026
Dal Lake and shikarasOpen, but ice can form at the edges in cold spells. Portions of the lake froze on 2 January 2024 with Srinagar at −4.8 °C, and a frozen surface was reported at about −7 °C in December 2024. A dawn shikara transfer may need a later start on an icy morning.WION, 2 Jan 2024; Business Today, Dec 2024
Srinagar airport and the Jammu–Srinagar highwayOperating, with weather days. Two flights were cancelled for low visibility on 22 December 2025, six on 27 December 2024, and every flight on 23 January 2026, when the highway also shut near the Navyug Tunnel. The highway was open on 1 January 2026. IMD's 1991–2020 normal for Srinagar is 1.5 days with fog in December.Kashmir Observer, 22 Dec 2025; ETV Bharat, 27 Dec 2024 and 1 Jan 2026; Skymet, 23 Jan 2026; IMD

Flights, roads and the spare day

Snow and fog interrupt travel more often than they stop a trip, and the sensible response is slack in the plan rather than a different destination.

  • Keep a spare day at both ends. Do not book a same-day onward flight or a fixed-date event after you leave Srinagar.
  • Put Gulmarg early, not last. It is the day a shut road or a stopped Phase 2 spoils most, so give yourself a later day to swap into.
  • Expect police rules on snow days. On 27 December 2024 only light vehicles with anti-skid chains were allowed on hilly routes, and tourist vehicles could run from 8 am to 6 pm (ETV Bharat).
  • Allow the longer drive. Published distances from Srinagar to Gulmarg run from about 54 to 60 km depending on the source, and the drive takes around 1.5 to 2 hours normally. Our snowfall guide puts it at 2 to 3 hours in snow.
  • Be indoors by dusk. Sunset is near 5:25 pm. Our Srinagar airport taxi desk tracks your flight and moves the pickup time if it is delayed.

Places to visit and things to do in Kashmir in cold weather

  • Gulmarg: gondola, sledging and snow walks. Our gondola guide explains the two phases. Non-skiers can sledge, snow-tube or take short guided snowshoe walks near the base, as our skiing guide notes. Skiers should read our Gulmarg ski packages page. Around New Year 2026 the Tourism Department and the Gulmarg Development Authority launched a seven-day Winter Carnival (Kashmir Horizon, 1 January 2026); we have seen no dates announced for 2026–27.
  • Srinagar: lake light, gardens and the old town. A one-hour shikara ride is part of every package below, and an early-afternoon slot gives the low winter sun. Do not expect flowers or autumn colour at the Mughal Gardens; go for the terraces and the quiet. The Old Srinagar heritage walk suits the middle of the day, and the shikara booking page lists ride types.
  • Food that belongs to the cold. Harissa, a slow-cooked lamb and rice porridge, is served at dawn in winter, and kahwa suits every hour; see our Kashmiri food guide. The short afternoons are good for indoor shopping: our handicrafts guide covers pashmina, carpets and papier-mâché.
  • Sonmarg: a snow day trip. The packages allow about three hours each way from Srinagar. Take avalanche warnings seriously: a minor avalanche was reported in Kashmir on the night of 27 January 2026 (the report does not say where), with no loss of life, and police warned tourists to avoid avalanche-prone areas (Greater Kashmir, 28 January 2026). Pony rides to Thajiwas Glacier are paid directly and are not in package prices.
  • Pahalgam: the river valley. The Lidder River walk is part of the packages. Aru and Betaab depend on snow and road conditions on the day, so treat them as optional; our Aru Valley guide has the detail.
  • For couples. December suits couples who want snow in the photographs and fireside evenings, a point our Kashmir honeymoon guide makes too. See also our Kashmir tour for couples.

Where to stay: heating, hotel or houseboat?

Hotels are the safer default in December. A night on a houseboat is still one of the reasons people come, but heating differs from boat to boat and we confirm it for the specific boat before you book. Our Dal Lake houseboat page says most deluxe and luxury boats have power backup while standard boats may have limited electricity during load-shedding, and the same question applies to hotels.

Power is the question people forget. In December 2024 the power distributor KPDCL's scheduled cuts ran from three to six hours in metered Srinagar to eight hours in non-metered areas (ETV Bharat, 10 December 2024), and unscheduled cuts were reported at Sonmarg in late January 2026 (Greater Kashmir, 28 January 2026). Our skiing guide also tells guests to confirm heating and hot water in Gulmarg because of occasional power fluctuations. Ask these before you book:

AskWhy it matters in December
What heats the room: a wood-burning bukhari stove, an electric heater, an electric blanket or central heating? They feel very different at −2 °C, and anything that runs on electricity stops in a power cut.
Is heating included in the rate or billed separately?Properties differ. Settle it before you arrive, not at the front desk.
Is there generator or inverter backup, and does it run the heating?Scheduled cuts ran three to eight hours in parts of the valley in December 2024.
Is hot water available in the morning?Mornings are the coldest hours and the ones you most need it.
On a houseboat, how do you reach the shore if the lake edge is icy?Ice formed at the edge of the Dal on 2 January 2024; a transfer may need a later start.

Our default for December is hotel nights in Srinagar and Gulmarg and one houseboat night once the heating is confirmed for that boat. The published packages put a houseboat night first and last; tell us if you prefer hotels throughout and we will re-price. Our Gulmarg hotel guide and Srinagar hotel guide list options.

What to pack for Kashmir in December

The readings above set the list: nights down to about −7 °C, a short day and strong snow glare. Our Kashmir packing list has the four-season version. For December bring:

  • Thermal base layers, top and bottom, and a fleece or wool mid-layer. Skip cotton, which holds damp and leaves you colder.
  • A down jacket rated for sub-zero temperatures. For Gulmarg and Sonmarg, where the coldest December nights we found reported were −5.4 °C in Gulmarg and −7.3 °C in Sonmarg, we would choose one with a comfort rating of about −10 °C.
  • Waterproof snow boots with good grip, and at least three pairs of wool socks.
  • Waterproof gloves with a thin liner, and a woollen cap that covers the ears.
  • Sunglasses or snow goggles, because snow glare is strong even on overcast days.
  • Lip balm with SPF and a thick moisturiser, since the cold air is drying.
  • A power bank and a small torch: houseboats and homestays can have few sockets, and the power cuts above are real.
  • Some cash for small shops, ponies and taxis, because we would not rely on card machines in Pahalgam or Sonmarg, and a photocopy of your ID for hotel check-ins.

A 5-night December outline

This is our published 5 nights / 6 days Kashmir package with a Gulmarg stay, re-ordered for winter: the weather-dependent night comes early and the Sonmarg trip doubles as the spare day. The package page shows the standard order, hotel tiers and prices. Drive times are the package's own, for dry roads.

  1. Day 1, Srinagar. Airport pickup, then the Mughal Gardens and a one-hour shikara ride as far as your arrival time and the light allow (sunset is near 5:20 pm). Night in a Srinagar hotel, or on a houseboat whose heating we have confirmed.
  2. Day 2, Srinagar to Gulmarg. About 1.5 hours on dry roads, 2 to 3 hours in snow. Meadow walk and Phase 1 of the gondola in the afternoon if it is running, Phase 2 the next morning if the wind allows. Night in Gulmarg.
  3. Day 3, Gulmarg to Pahalgam. An early gondola ride, then about three hours' drive to Pahalgam and the Lidder River at dusk. Night in Pahalgam.
  4. Day 4, Pahalgam to Srinagar. Aru or Betaab only if snow and road allow (paid directly), then the old town and shopping. Night in Srinagar.
  5. Day 5, Sonmarg day trip. About three hours each way on the road through the Sonamarg Tunnel, and a pony to Thajiwas Glacier if conditions allow (paid directly). If Gulmarg was snowed out on Day 2, swap the two days. Last night in Srinagar, on a houseboat if the heating is confirmed.
  6. Day 6, departure. Airport drop. A same-day connection after a Srinagar departure is the first thing weather breaks, so leave slack.

Two notes. The package's basic hotel tier lists a property in Tangmarg, the town below Gulmarg, for the Gulmarg night, while the premium and 4-star tiers list Gulmarg hotels; tell us if waking up in Gulmarg matters to you. For shorter trips see the 3 nights / 4 days quick getaway and the 4 nights / 5 days Kashmir classic.

What does a December trip cost?

These are the published starting-from prices per person from the package tables, on twin sharing. Each package page lists three hotel tiers but publishes one starting price per group size; ask us for the price of the tier you want. The prices step down with group size, and the final price also depends on your dates.

Package2 travellers4 travellers6 travellersExtra bed
3N/4D Quick Getaway (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam)₹11,950₹9,120₹8,100₹4,330
4N/5D Kashmir Classic (adds Sonmarg)₹13,800₹10,650₹9,490₹6,370
5N/6D Gulmarg Stay (one night in Gulmarg or, at the basic tier, Tangmarg)₹16,300₹12,890₹11,810₹6,820

Prices include deluxe rooms as per the hotel list, daily breakfast and dinner, a one-hour shikara ride, Srinagar airport pickup and drop, a private vehicle and all taxes. They exclude airfare, lunches, Gulmarg gondola tickets, trips to Betaab, Aru or Chandanwari (paid directly), pony rides (paid directly), entry fees, guide charges, personal expenses and any cost due to natural calamities such as landslides or strikes. We leave gondola fares off this page because the figures published by booking sites differ. The gondola is run by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, whose site links to its online ticket booking; check the fare there. Tell us your dates and we can help you book a slot, but nobody can guarantee a slot in a peak week.

The tables do not split December from other months, so ask us to confirm the fare for your exact dates, especially 24 December to 2 January.

Christmas and New Year week

Gulmarg fills first. Its hotels were fully booked by 23 December 2023 (The Tribune) and at nearly full occupancy for the 2025–26 New Year week (All India Radio, 2 January 2026; Kashmir Horizon, 1 January 2026). The gondola stayed busy through the first five days of January 2026, according to the Director of Tourism Kashmir (Kashmir Convener, 5 January 2026).

New Year's Day 2026 brought fresh snow to the upper reaches while the plains, Srinagar included, missed it. The Mughal Road, the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri road and Sinthan road were closed temporarily, and the Jammu–Srinagar highway stayed open (ETV Bharat, 1 January 2026). A festive week can deliver snow where you came for it and closures on roads you did not plan to use. To plan it:

  • Lock the Gulmarg night first, then flights on a changeable fare. Rooms there go first.
  • Keep the first two days flexible so a snow day can be swapped.
  • Expect gondola queues. Our gondola guide advises booking a slot before 11 am so Phase 2 is reachable before afternoon weather changes.
  • Ask us whether a Winter Carnival or similar event is planned for your dates; we have seen no announcement for 2026–27.
  • If you are searching for a Kashmir New Year package, the three itineraries in the cost table are where we would start. Send your dates and group size and we will price the festive dates.

What not to plan in December

  • One snow date for the whole trip. The three winters above started in three different ways.
  • Gulmarg on the last day. A shut road or a stopped Phase 2 then leaves no day to swap.
  • Snow in Srinagar. Plan for cold and clear, and count Srinagar snow as a bonus.
  • Gurez, the Mughal Road or the Leh road. All three closed after snow in December 2024 or 2025. For Ladakh, see our Kashmir vs Ladakh comparison.
  • Tulips or autumn colour. The tulip garden opens in March, and autumn colour belongs to October and November; see our month-by-month guide and our autumn guide.
  • A room without heating and power questions. Ask the five questions in the table above.

Next step

Send us your dates, group size and what matters most (snow, a houseboat night, a honeymoon, skiing) through our contact page. We will tell you what the Srinagar MeT office is forecasting, which roads are running, and give you a priced plan. MeT outlooks look only a week or two ahead (the one issued on 30 November 2025 ran to 12 December), so the answer for your dates only exists in the week you travel. Plan with a spare day and decide the snow-dependent days last.

Questions travellers ask

Is Kashmir open for tourists in December?

Yes. Hotels, Srinagar airport and the Jammu–Srinagar highway normally operate through December, with weather delays and short closures after heavy snow or fog, and Gulmarg's hotels were nearly full for the 2025–26 New Year week (All India Radio, 2 January 2026). What changes is access: Gurez, the Mughal Road and the Leh road close with snow, and the tulip garden is shut until spring. Advisories can change within hours, so we check them when you book and again in the week you travel.

Does it snow in Srinagar in December?

Sometimes late in the month, and often not at all. IMD's December normal for Srinagar is 27 mm of rainfall over about 2.6 rainy days. The city's first snow of winter 2024–25 fell on 27 December (2 inches). On 21 December 2025 it rained, and the heaviest snowfall of that winter up to then came on 23 January 2026. Gulmarg and Sonmarg are the realistic places for snow.

Is the Gulmarg gondola open in December?

Yes, weather permitting. It was busy through the first five days of January 2026. Phase 1 to Kongdoori usually runs more often than Phase 2 to Apharwat, which stops in high wind or heavy snow, so keep a spare day. The gondola was shut from 25 May to 25 June 2026 after a technical fault, so we check the gondola status when you book and again in the week you travel.

Is the Srinagar–Leh road open in December?

Not reliably. Zojila Pass was closed to vehicles on 21 December 2025, and the highway shut for four days before reopening on 2 January 2026 to passenger vehicles from Minamarg towards Sonmarg only, with traffic from Sonmarg towards Kargil still suspended. The Border Roads Organisation cleared snow each time. It reopens between falls, but nobody can promise a crossing on a given date, so we do not plan or recommend a December road trip to Ladakh.

What is the best week for snow in December?

We found no data that ranks one December week above another, so we will not name one. The record shows that IMD's rainfall figures more than double from December to January (Gulmarg 74 mm to 161 mm), that Chillai Kalan starts on 21 December, and that snow arrived on 21 December 2025 and 27 December 2024. If snow is the point, choose late December or January and keep your dates flexible.

Are houseboats warm in December?

It depends on the boat. Rooms may be warmed by a wood-burning bukhari stove, electric heaters or electric blankets, and what is on offer differs by boat. Scheduled power cuts of three to eight hours were reported in parts of the valley in December 2024. We confirm heating, hot water and power backup for the specific boat, and our default for December is one houseboat night with hotels for the rest.

Is December a good month for a honeymoon in Kashmir?

Yes for couples who want snow in the photographs and quiet evenings by a fire, and no for couples who want gardens in bloom or long outdoor days. Daylight runs from about 7:30 am to 5:25 pm, nights fall below freezing and snow in Gulmarg is possible but not certain. A Gulmarg night with a spare day, plus a heated stay in Srinagar, suits a December honeymoon.

How cold are the nights in Kashmir in December?

IMD's December mean night low is −1.6 °C in Srinagar, −4.2 °C in Pahalgam and −4.8 °C in Gulmarg. Colder nights were reported: Srinagar −6.6 °C, reported on 24 December 2024, and Sonmarg −7.3 °C on the night of 24–25 December 2025. Cloud can lift Srinagar to +4 °C, as it did on 21 December 2025, so pack for the cold end.
