June is the month that most travellers imagine when they imagine Kashmir in summer: blue skies over Dal Lake, wildflowers on the meadows, ponies on the trails and a cool breeze when the plains are baking. It is also the month the valley is at its busiest. This guide, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, describes a usual June, not a forecast. It covers the weather, what is in bloom, which places and roads are open, how the Amarnath Yatra changes things, how to avoid the worst of the crowds and what to pack. We confirm dates and conditions for your week before you pay.
What is Kashmir like in June?
Warm and bright by day, cool by night, with long daylight hours. Srinagar can feel hot at noon, while Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg stay noticeably cooler, and the evenings drop quickly everywhere. Showers and afternoon storms are possible, but the heavy rains of the plains' monsoon have usually not reached the valley yet. The snow sits on the highest slopes, the rivers run full and the meadows are at their most colourful.
How warm is it in June?
| Place | What to expect | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Srinagar | Roughly 14 to 29 °C; hot in the midday sun | Sightsee in the morning and late afternoon; carry water and a hat |
| Pahalgam | Cooler and fresh by the Lidder | Evenings need a jacket |
| Gulmarg | Cool and breezy, with meadows in flower | A warm layer, even on a sunny day |
| Sonmarg | Cold near the glacier, mild in the valley | Snow on the glacier trail; shoes with grip |
| Doodhpathri and Yusmarg | Cool, green and breezy | Rain can make tracks muddy |
These are rough ranges, not a forecast. Dress in layers and keep a rain layer within reach.
What is at its best in June?
- The meadows, which are in flower at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri. This is the month for wide, colourful views.
- Long days: sunrise comes early and light lasts into the evening, which makes a relaxed schedule possible.
- Early-morning shikara rides on Dal Lake, when the water is calm and the air is cool. See our shikara booking page.
- The Mughal gardens in full leaf; see our Mughal gardens guide.
- Cherries, which usually ripen in Kashmir around June, so look out for them at roadside stalls and orchards.
- River rafting on the Lidder at Pahalgam. Our rafting page says May and June are exciting but powerful, with the river high with snowmelt, and that operators judge the day.

How does the Amarnath Yatra change a June trip?
The Amarnath Yatra typically begins in late June and runs into August, with exact dates announced each year by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. It does not close the valley, but it changes the roads and the rooms around Pahalgam and Sonmarg: traffic can be held or routed at set hours, convoys and checkpoints can slow a drive, and rooms near the base camps fill with pilgrims. If you are travelling for the valley, not the yatra, plan Pahalgam and Sonmarg early in the month or ask us for a plan that avoids the busiest road hours. If you are travelling for the yatra, our Amarnath Yatra package page explains what we arrange and what the Board handles, and our yatra guide covers the route.
How crowded is June, and how do you avoid the worst of it?
June is peak season, with school holidays, honeymoon trips and Indian families escaping the heat. The busiest points are Dal Lake in the evening, the Gulmarg gondola mid-morning, Pahalgam's pony stands and the roads on weekends.
- Book your flights and your main hotel nights as early as you can; the better rooms go first.
- Start early: the gondola, the gardens and the old city are calmer in the first hours.
- Use weekdays for Gulmarg and the busiest stops, and weekends for the quieter day trips such as Doodhpathri.
- Keep one spare day in the plan for weather and for a rest.
- Ask which nights are on a hotel and which on a houseboat, and confirm what the rate covers.
Can you combine Kashmir and Ladakh in June?
June is when the Ladakh season gets going, so a combined trip becomes practical. The road from Srinagar to Leh opens on dates the authorities set, and the high passes can be tricky after rain or snow. Our Kashmir and Ladakh combo package page shows how the two halves fit together, and our Kashmir vs Ladakh comparison helps you decide whether to do both. Allow time to acclimatise in Leh, and do not leave the combo to the last minute: permits and rooms need lead time.
What should you pack for June?
- Light cotton or linen for Srinagar and a fleece or light jacket for evenings and the hills.
- A compact rain jacket or umbrella.
- A hat, sunglasses and sun cream, because the sun is strong, especially at height.
- Shoes with grip for meadows, ponies and glacier trails, and sandals for the hotel.
- Water bottle, power bank and a copy of your ID. Our packing list covers the rest.
