The Amarnath Yatra is the pilgrimage to a cave shrine high in the Kashmir Himalaya, and it is run by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB). We are the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, and our part is the ground: where you sleep before and after, how you get to the base camp, and a calm plan around the days that the Board's registration gives you. We do not register pilgrims and we do not sell helicopter seats. This page says exactly where our work starts and stops, so you can plan with confidence.

How does the yatra work, in plain terms?

Our Amarnath Yatra guide describes the shrine as a sacred ice lingam inside a Himalayan cave at about 3,888 m. The yatra typically runs from late June to late August, timed to the Shravan month, though the Board announces the exact dates each year. You register, you carry a compulsory health certificate, and you travel on the day and by the route your registration allows. There are two routes to the cave.

RouteLength and time, per our guideSuits
Pahalgam routeAbout 46 km over three to five days, via Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni; more scenic and physically longerPilgrims who want a gradual climb with overnight camps
Baltal routeA steeper but shorter 14 km, usually one strenuous day or split across twoPilgrims who are short on time and comfortable with a harder push

Neither is easy. You are walking at altitudes between about 2,900 m and 3,900 m, and altitude sickness is a real risk regardless of age.

Which route and which base should you choose?

Choose the route by your fitness and your time, not by the scenery, and take the doctor's view first. The base then follows the route. For the Baltal route, Sonmarg is the closest town; our valley itineraries put Sonmarg about three hours from Srinagar. For the Pahalgam route, Pahalgam is the base; our itineraries put it about two hours from Srinagar. Srinagar is where most pilgrims land and settle in.

What should you know about helicopters before you book anything?

Our Amarnath helicopter page describes helicopter flights from Neelgrath near Baltal and from Pahalgam to the Panjtarni helipad, close to the cave, with a short walk after landing. It says bookings depend on weather and on the Shrine Board's regulations, that valid yatra registration is required, and that seats fill quickly in the yatra period. Whether a helicopter service runs in a particular year, which helipads it uses, what it costs and how tickets are sold are decided each year, and the details change from one season to the next. So we do not print a fare, and we do not hold seats. Book only through the Shrine Board's official channels, and be wary of anyone offering a seat outside them.

What does a sample ground plan look like?

The yatra days are set by your registration, not by us, so this is the plan around them. It is a pattern, not a priced itinerary.

  1. Arrive in Srinagar. Airport pickup, a hotel, and a quiet evening.
  2. Settle and acclimatise. Our yatra guide advises arriving in Srinagar at least two days early. Keep this day gentle: a slow shikara ride or a short garden visit, nothing strenuous.
  3. Transfer to the base. A private vehicle to Pahalgam or Sonmarg, depending on your route, and an early night.
  4. Yatra days. On the Board's schedule, with the gear and papers listed below.
  5. Rest and recovery. A night at a hotel in Pahalgam or Srinagar, with a full day to rest before travel.
  6. Optional Kashmir days, or departure. Many pilgrims add a few days in the valley; see the packages below.

How fit do you need to be, and what do you carry?

Our guide asks for the compulsory health certificate, which involves a basic fitness check, an ECG and blood tests, and is valid only for a limited window before the yatra, so time it with your registration. It recommends two to three weeks of walking or light cardio training before you travel. Speak to your own doctor before you book, especially if you have a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition. We are a travel desk, and we do not give medical advice.

  • Waterproof trekking shoes with ankle support, and a rain poncho, since mountain weather turns without warning.
  • Thermal layers even in July, trekking poles, a headlamp and a personal water bottle.
  • High-energy snacks, and copies of your yatra permit and health certificate. Checkpoints along the route verify both.
  • A small first-aid kit and any regular medicines in your hand luggage.

Never trek alone; travel in a group or with your camp's organised batch. The Board and the local administration pause movement during heavy rain or landslide risk, and those pauses exist for good reason. Our pilgrimage journal has more on travelling to Kashmir's shrines.

How do the roads and the weather change your plan?

During the yatra, traffic arrangements on the roads to Baltal and Pahalgam change: vehicles may be held, routed or restricted at set hours, and the rules differ from year to year. Rain can trigger landslides, and a trek can be paused. So we keep a buffer day, we do not plan a flight on the day you come down, and we confirm the day's road rules before every transfer. Our road pages for Pahalgam and Sonmarg give the valley routes in more detail. For the wider picture of travel in Kashmir, read Is Kashmir safe to visit?.

Which Kashmir packages pair with the yatra?

These are Kashmir sightseeing plans for the days around the yatra. The yatra itself, the registration and any helicopter ticket are not in any of these prices. Every figure is copied from the package's own price table, per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar.

Our Kashmir pages say that you can extend nights or adjust the plan, so tell us if you want a rest day inserted rather than a fixed sightseeing day. The tables do not split seasons, so we confirm the rate for your dates before you pay.

What is the next step?

Contact us a few months before the yatra, because the Board's registration and the hotel rooms near the base camps move fast. Send your travel dates, the number of pilgrims and their ages, the route you are thinking of, and any medical needs through our contact page. We reply on WhatsApp, and our site says within 30 minutes. For the road leg from the airport, see our Srinagar airport taxi page.

Questions travellers ask

Can TDI register me for the Amarnath Yatra?

No. Registration is made through the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and its authorised channels, and its own website is jksasb.nic.in. We can walk you through the steps and the documents, such as the compulsory health certificate, but we do not issue registrations or yatra cards, and we do not hold slots.

Do you sell Amarnath helicopter tickets?

No. Helicopter tickets come only through the Shrine Board's official channels. Whether helicopters run in a given year, from which helipads and at what fare is decided each year, and the details change from one season to the next. We cover the hotels, the vehicle and the plan around your flight.

When does the Amarnath Yatra run?

It typically runs from late June to late August, timed to the Shravan month, but the Shrine Board announces the dates each year. Check its notification for the current year rather than relying on last year's calendar. We plan your hotel nights once your registration slot is known.

How many days do I need around the yatra?

It depends on the route. Our guide gives the Pahalgam route as about 46 km over three to five days and the Baltal route as a steeper 14 km, one or two days. Add two days in Srinagar before to settle, and one or two days after to rest. We plan a buffer for the weather.

Which route is easier, Pahalgam or Baltal?

Neither is easy. The Pahalgam route is longer and more gradual, with overnight camps. The Baltal route is shorter but steeper. Choose by your fitness, your time and your doctor's advice, and remember that altitude affects people regardless of age. Ask your doctor before you decide, and tell us your choice so we can plan the base.

Is the Amarnath Yatra safe?

We cannot promise safety. The route is high, the weather turns quickly, and movement is paused during heavy rain or landslide risk. Travel in a group or with your camp's organised batch, follow the Shrine Board's instructions, and carry your permit and health certificate. Our safety guide covers travel in Kashmir more broadly.

Can older pilgrims go?

Some do, but it depends on health and fitness. Speak to your doctor first, and note that the Board requires the health certificate. Ponies and porters are available on both routes through registered camps, and helicopters are an option when they run. We plan slower days, rest nights and a private vehicle to the base.

What does your Amarnath Yatra package cost?

We do not publish a fixed yatra price. We quote the ground services, meaning hotels and the private vehicle, for your dates and group, as separate lines. The Kashmir packages above show our table prices for the sightseeing days around the yatra. The registration and any helicopter ticket are paid to the Board's channels, not to us.
