Kashmir Pilgrimage Journal
Notes on the sacred journeys to Vaishno Devi, Amarnath and the valley's ancient shrines — what to expect on the climb and how to prepare.
The Amarnath Yatra
The yatra runs for a few weeks in summer on dates announced each year by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. Read our Amarnath yatra guide for how it works and our Amarnath yatra package for what we arrange. Our helicopter booking page explains where tickets come from.
Vaishno Devi
The shrine in the Trikuta hills near Katra is reached by a long trek or by helicopter, with registration through the shrine board. Read our Vaishno Devi destination page and our Katra rooms guide for planning, and our Srinagar to Jammu Tempo Traveller page for the journey from the valley.
Planning with care
Pilgrimage trips depend on official dates, quotas and weather, so keep dates flexible, carry copies of your registration and ID and follow the board's instructions. Check fitness and take medical advice if needed. We help with hotels, transfers and spare days, and we tell you early if a pause or closure affects your plan.
Stays, transfers and rest days
The parts of a pilgrimage trip that we plan are the practical ones: hotels in Srinagar, Pahalgam and Katra before and after, private transfers to the base points and spare days for rest, weather and delays. Rooms and vehicles are limited in the yatra weeks, so contact us a few months ahead and keep your dates flexible. Our Srinagar to Jammu Tempo Traveller page explains the road to Katra for groups.
Fitness, altitude and care
Both pilgrimages involve long walks, thin air and cold, and the Amarnath route climbs to high altitude. Prepare in the weeks before, take medical advice if you have heart or breathing problems, carry medicines and warm layers and go slowly. If you feel unwell, rest and descend. Older pilgrims should choose the slower route or the helicopter, booked only through the shrine board, and plan extra days. We help you think through the plan and say plainly when it is too much.
Respect and etiquette
Pilgrimage sites are places of worship. Dress modestly, follow the instructions of the shrine staff, do not litter and keep noise low. Carry only what you need, and keep your registration and ID with you at all times. Local helpers, ponies and porters are available along the routes, and should be hired through registered channels with a clear price.
Questions travellers ask
Who issues Amarnath registration and helicopter tickets?
The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, through its official channels only. We do not issue them, but we guide you through the steps.
Do you arrange Vaishno Devi trips?
We plan the journey, stays and transfers around the pilgrimage. Registration and helicopter tickets come only from the shrine board.
When is the Amarnath Yatra?
The Board announces the dates each year, usually in summer. Check the official notice before you plan.
Is the yatra suitable for older pilgrims?
It can be, with preparation, medical advice and the helicopter or a slower route. Plan rest days and keep dates flexible.
