What is the Vaishno Devi yatra?
Vaishno Devi is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. Pilgrims climb through the Trikuta hills to a cave where the Mother Goddess is worshipped in the form of three natural stone formations. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board manages the shrine, the track, registration and the facilities along the way. Katra, at the foot of the hills, is the base.
The track passes Banganga, Charan Paduka, Ardh Kuwari and Sanjichhat before it reaches the Bhawan, the shrine complex. Many pilgrims go on to the Bhairon temple above it after darshan. For most people the yatra is a day or a night of effort, and the memory of it lasts.

How does the yatra work?
- Register with the Shrine Board before you start. Registration is free, and each pilgrim needs a yatra card; follow the Shrine Board's official site or app for the current process.
- Start from the Banganga check post, where the cards are checked.
- Walk, or choose a pony, palki, battery car or the helicopter for part of the way.
- Reach the Bhawan for darshan. Waiting times depend on the day and can be long in peak periods.
- Go on to the Bhairon temple if you wish, then come down at your own pace and rest.

Where should you stay in Katra?
Katra has hotels, guesthouses and dharamshalas for every budget, and many stand within a short ride of the registration counter. Hotels usually offer early breakfast, packed food for the walk and luggage storage while you climb. Our Katra Vaishno Devi rooms page lets you ask for options and current rates for your dates. Peak weeks fill fast, so book early. Shrine Board accommodation along the track is booked with the board.
What should you wear and carry?
- Comfortable, broken-in shoes with flat soles. Light woollens for most of the year and heavy ones in winter.
- A light rain cover, a water bottle, a small torch and any regular medicines.
- Original photo ID for every pilgrim, because registration and checkpoints ask for it.
- Light luggage. Leave valuables at the hotel, and expect cloakrooms near the shrine for items that cannot go inside; check the Shrine Board's current rules on bags, phones and leather items.
- See a doctor first if you have a heart, lung or knee problem, and take rest stops without hurry.
What should you know about safety and booking?
- Book helicopter tickets, registration and Shrine Board rooms only through the Shrine Board's official channels. Be careful of unofficial sites and agents.
- TDI does not issue yatra registration or helicopter tickets. We plan the stay, the transfers and the rest of your trip.
- Follow weather and landslide alerts, and be ready to reschedule. Keep a spare night between the yatra and any train or flight you cannot change.
- Keep your group together on crowded days, agree on a meeting point, and carry a phone number for your hotel.
How do you add Kashmir to the yatra?
Many pilgrims continue to Srinagar after the shrine. We suggest the yatra first, a buffer night, then the train or road to Srinagar and a Kashmir package. How long is the walk from Katra to Vaishno Devi?
About 12 to 13 km, depending on whether you count from Katra or from the Banganga check post. Most pilgrims take several hours and rest on the way. Your pace, the weather and the crowd decide how long you need, so keep a spare day in the plan.
Do I need to register for the Vaishno Devi yatra?
Yes. The Shrine Board requires every pilgrim to register, and registration is free. Follow its official site or app for the current process and carry original photo ID. TDI does not issue registration, but we can plan the rest of the trip around your date.
Can I book the Vaishno Devi helicopter through TDI?
No. Helicopter tickets are sold by the Shrine Board, and TDI does not issue, hold or resell them. Our helicopter guide explains where the official portal is and how to spot fake sites. We can plan your Katra room and transfers around your flight.
How many days do I need for Vaishno Devi?
Plan two nights in Katra: one to arrive and rest, one after the yatra. Add a buffer day if you have a train or flight to catch, and more days if you continue to Kashmir. The yatra itself takes most of a day, and queues can make it longer.
Is Vaishno Devi suitable for older people?
Many older pilgrims go, using a pony, palki, battery car or the helicopter for part of the way. Talk to your doctor first, travel with someone, and avoid peak days and the hot weeks. We can plan a slower schedule with rest stops and a quieter room.
Is the Vaishno Devi yatra open all year?
Yes, the yatra runs through the year, but weather, landslide alerts and heavy crowds can pause or slow it. March to October is the comfortable window, with Navratri and the holiday weeks the busiest. Check the Shrine Board's notices close to your date.
