Let us plan your trip

Why does the Srinagar to Manali road trip end here?

After days of bare mountains, passes above 4,000 m and nights in tented camps, Manali is a relief: forest, orchards, running water and thick air. It is the end of our one-way Discover Ladakh package, which runs nine nights from Srinagar through Kargil, Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong and Sarchu, then down to Manali. The package page lists it from ₹51,800 per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar. Because the route is one-way, you finish in Himachal instead of returning to Kashmir.

Manali is a busy hill town with old wooden temples, riverside cafes and many visitors in season, so we treat it as the place to rest, eat well and wash off the dust before you travel home.

How do you get to Manali?

RouteWhat it is likeOur advice
Sarchu to Manali on our packageAbout 220 km on our itinerary, over Baralacha La (4,890 m), through Keylong (3,350 m) and the Atal Tunnel, in one long dayStart early; the road is the whole day
Delhi or Chandigarh by roadA long day or an overnight run that follows the Beas river for the last stretchCommon for travellers who want Manali on its own
By airThe nearest airport is Bhuntar, near Kullu, about 50 km away; schedules changeCheck flights before you fix other plans
Manali to Leh over the highwayThe Sarchu route in reverse, usually two days with a night on the wayOpen only in the warmer months; we confirm the road for your dates

We do not plan a direct Srinagar to Manali transfer. The practical link between the two runs through Ladakh, which is why we sell it as one long trip. Snow and clearing work decide when the high passes are open, so we check conditions on the morning of each drive and tell you at once if the plan changes.

What is there to see and do in Manali?

  • Walk through Old Manali, a hill village across the river with narrow lanes, wooden houses and small cafes.
  • Visit the Hadimba Devi Temple, a wooden temple among tall cedars at the edge of town.
  • Go to Vashisht, a village above the Beas known for its temple and hot springs.
  • Stroll the Mall Road and the Tibetan market for shawls, woollens, caps and snacks. Compare before you buy.
  • Drive up to Solang Valley, an open slope used for snow play in winter and for adventure activities in the warmer months.
  • Rohtang Pass lies above the town. Vehicle access there is regulated and the rules change, so ask us before you plan it. The Atal Tunnel now carries the highway under the mountain, which is why our road trip no longer needs the pass itself.

Where do you stay in Manali?

Our Discover Ladakh page lists named Manali stays for each of its four tiers, Standard, Deluxe, Super Deluxe and Premium, so you can see how the choice changes the night. If you extend your stay or travel separately, we ask for options for your dates and confirm them before you pay.

When should you go to Manali?

MonthsWhat to expectWhat to weigh
December to FebruaryCold, with snow in the upper valley and sometimes in town; the Leh highway is shutLadakh is a summer trip, so we do not plan the road trip now
March to JuneBlossom and cool days, busy from April; the highway to Leh usually opens in early summerOpening dates change each year, so ask us first
July to AugustMonsoon rain and green slopesLandslides can block mountain roads; keep a spare day
September to OctoberClear days and the apple harvest; the usual finish for the road tripClosing dates for the high road depend on snow
NovemberCold and quiet, with early snow possibleFew services on the high road

How long should you spend in Manali, and what does a day look like?

On our package you spend one night, enough to rest and move on. If Manali is a destination in its own right, allow two or three nights. A relaxed day might run like this.

  1. Morning: the Hadimba Devi Temple while the forest is quiet, then breakfast in Old Manali.
  2. Midday: the Mall Road and the Tibetan market.
  3. Afternoon: Solang Valley, or a drive to Naggar, an old village across the Beas with a castle and an art gallery.
  4. Next morning: the transfer to the bus stand that the package itinerary describes.

What should you know about safety and onward travel?

  • Book onward travel from Manali, not Srinagar. The itinerary ends in Manali with a transfer to the bus stand for a Volvo bus, and the nearest airport is at Bhuntar.
  • Paragliding, river rafting and other adventure activities run seasonally and are not in the package price. Use licensed operators, follow the guides and ask us what suits your group.
  • Mountain roads can close after heavy rain or snow. Keep a spare day before any flight or train.
  • Carry original photo ID. Our permits and ID guide explains what the Ladakh part of the trip needs.

What is the next step?

Compare the circuit with our other Ladakh tour packages, read the Ladakh guide and look at the stops on the way: Kargil, Leh, Pangong and Sarchu. Our Srinagar to Leh road trip guide covers the first half. Send your dates and group size through our contact page, and we confirm roads and permits before you pay.

Questions travellers ask

Is Manali in Kashmir?

No. Manali is in the Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh. We include it because our Discover Ladakh package is a one-way road trip that starts in Srinagar and ends in Manali, so the two meet through Ladakh rather than directly.

How do I get from Srinagar to Manali?

By the Ladakh route on our Discover Ladakh package: nine nights through Kargil, Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong and Sarchu, then down to Manali. We do not plan a direct transfer. Road status on the passes depends on snow, so we confirm it for your dates before you pay.

How far is Manali from Sarchu?

About 220 km on our itinerary, a long day over Baralacha La, through Keylong and the Atal Tunnel. The road is the main event of the day, so we leave early and keep time for stops. We check conditions on the morning of the drive.

Do I need a permit to visit Manali?

As a general rule, Manali town is visited on photo ID. Some high passes near it have vehicle rules that change, and Ladakh has its own permit steps, which our packages list as included. Rules differ by nationality and change, so we confirm yours.

How many days do I need in Manali?

One night is enough to rest at the end of the Srinagar to Manali trip. If you want to see the temples, Old Manali, Solang Valley and a day trip to Naggar, allow two or three nights. Tell us what you enjoy and we shape the plan.

When is the Leh to Manali highway open?

Generally in the warmer months, roughly June to September, but the opening and closing dates change every year with snow and clearing work. We do not quote dates. We confirm the road for your travel dates and tell you early if a change affects the plan.
