About
Wide open pastures ringed by rock and glacier mark Rangdum, the last stop before the road drops into the Zanskar valley. An ancient monastery watches over one of Ladakh’s most isolated, least-visited corners.

Rangdum
Let us plan your trip
Rangdum is a broad, open bowl of pasture and streams under steep rock and hanging glaciers. A handful of houses sit on the valley floor, and the monastery stands on a hill above them. There is little here to tick off. People come for the space, the light on the slopes in the evening and the quiet, and because the road beyond it leads into one of the most isolated inhabited valleys in the Himalaya.
Our Ladakh with Zanskar package uses Rangdum as the night between Kargil and Padum, which makes the long road into Zanskar two shorter days.
| Stretch | What it is like | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Kargil to Rangdum | 127 km up the Suru valley, past villages and fields, with the Nun-Kun massif and its glaciers in view along the way | Leave after breakfast; lunch is taken on the road |
| The rock statue at Kartse Khar | A large rock-cut Buddha beside the road, which our itinerary describes as seventh-century | A short stop for photographs |
| Rangdum onward to Padum | Over Pensi La and past the Drang Drung Glacier, on rougher dirt in places | A long day; see our Padum page |
| Rangdum back to Kargil | The same valley in reverse, part of the long return from Padum | Allow most of a day |
Rangdum is reached only by road, from Kargil. If you are coming from Srinagar, the first leg is the highway over Zoji La to Kargil, which we cover on our Kargil page and in our Srinagar to Leh road trip guide. Road conditions change, so we check them on the morning of every drive.
Ask before you photograph people, and dress modestly at the monastery. Take your rubbish with you; there is no collection here.
Our package page lists a homestay at Rangdum for all four tiers, Standard to Premium. Expect shared or basic bathrooms, solar power that may be limited in the evening, warm blankets, simple home-cooked meals and weak or no mobile signal. It is part of the experience, but it is not a hotel, and we say so before you book. Bring warm layers, a torch and snacks for the road.
| Stop | The feel | Why people go |
|---|---|---|
| Rangdum | Open pasture, glaciers and a monastery in a quiet valley | The Suru valley scenery and the doorway to Zanskar |
| Pangong | A long lake that changes colour through the day | Water, light and a camp night |
| Hanle | A remote plateau with a very dark sky | Stargazing |
| Sarchu | A plateau camp on the Leh to Manali highway | A night between two high passes |
| Months | What to expect | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| November to May | Snow on the pass road, deep cold and shut stays | We do not plan trips here in these months |
| June | The road opens as snow is cleared; cold nights | Opening dates change each year, so ask us first |
| July to August | The steadiest road conditions and the greenest pasture | The busiest weeks; book early |
| September to October | Clear, crisp days and very cold nights | Short days; ask which homestays are still open |
Rangdum is higher than Leh, and you sleep there after the climb from Kargil, so we place it after nights in Leh. Drink water, eat lightly and rest on arrival. Tell your driver at once about a headache, nausea or breathlessness, and be ready to come down. Talk to your doctor before booking if you have a heart, lung or blood pressure condition. Nights are cold even in midsummer, so bring thermals, a down jacket, a hat and gloves.

Rangdum is a high valley at the head of the Suru valley in Ladakh, about 127 km from Kargil on our itinerary. People stop because it splits the long road to Zanskar into two days, and because the pasture, glaciers and monastery are worth the night.
About 3,657 m on our itinerary, which is higher than Leh. That is why we place it after nights in Leh. Drink water, rest on arrival, and tell your driver at once about a headache, nausea or breathlessness.
We do not plan it that way. The road from Kargil is about 127 km each way, so a day trip leaves little time at the valley. A night in Rangdum lets you see the monastery at sunset and start the Zanskar leg fresh.
Simple. Our package page lists a homestay for every tier. Expect basic bathrooms, limited evening power, warm blankets, home-cooked meals and little or no mobile signal. It is not a hotel, and we describe what your homestay offers before you book.
Roughly June to September, when the Suru valley road and the pass are open. Snow closes the road for much of the rest of the year, and the homestays shut. Opening dates change every year, so we confirm the road and the stay for your dates.
Yes. Rangdum is the usual overnight between Kargil and Padum. From there the road climbs over Pensi La, passes the Drang Drung Glacier and drops into Zanskar. It is a long day, so we leave early and arrive in Padum in the evening.
