Pangong

Let us plan your trip

How do you get to Pangong Lake?

Pangong is reached from Leh, never directly from Srinagar. Most itineraries make a loop: Leh to Nubra Valley over Khardung La, from Nubra to the lake by the Shyok road, then back to Leh over Chang La, which is above 5,000 m. Our Short Trip to Ladakh treats Pangong as a day trip via Shyok and Chang La, and the Ladakh Expedition with Nubra & Pangong gives you a night at the lake.

RouteWhat it is likeOur advice
Leh to Pangong over Chang LaAbout 155 km one way, a climb to a very high pass and a long descent to the lakeLeave early, and expect a full day on the road
Nubra to Pangong by the Shyok roadA remote road along the Shyok river that links the two valleysThe usual way to make the loop. If it is closed, we use another route and tell you of any change in cost
Pangong to HanleA long route over Tsaga La, used by our Hanle packagesFor travellers going on to the east of Ladakh; see Hanle

Why does the lake change colour?

The water is clear, cold and very salty, and it sits in a high, dry basin with bare mountains on every side. As the sun moves and clouds pass, the lake runs from pale turquoise to deep blue, and at the ends of the day it can look grey, green or almost purple. In summer the shores attract birds. In winter the lake freezes.

What is there to do at Pangong?

  • Watch the light at sunset and again at sunrise. This is the main reason to sleep at the lake.
  • Walk slowly along the shore, as far as the authorities allow, and take photographs.
  • Look at the sky after dark. On a clear night the stars are sharp, and cold is part of the experience.
  • Have tea in camp and talk to the hosts about village life near the lake.
  • Do not plan on swimming or boating. The water is cold, the altitude is high and help is far away.

Day trip or overnight stay?

ChoiceWhat you getWhat to weigh
Day trip from Leh or the Nubra roadA few hours at the lake in the middle of the dayLong hours of driving and light that is flat at midday
One night beside the lakeSunset, a clear night sky and sunrise, with time to sit and lookBasic camp comfort, cold nights and a high sleeping altitude

We prefer the overnight stay when the group is acclimatised. Do not sleep at Pangong on your first or second night in Ladakh.

Where do you stay near Pangong?

Stays are limited and simple: lakeside camps, cottages and guesthouses. Expect meals in camp, basic bathrooms, heaters rather than central heating, and little or no mobile signal. Book early in midsummer. Our Hotels in Pangong page lets you ask for options and rates for your dates, and every Ladakh package lists its Pangong stay in Standard to Premium tiers.

When should you go to Pangong?

MonthsWhat to expectWhat to weigh
November to AprilFrozen lake, deep cold and shut camps; Chang La carries heavy snowWe do not plan trips to Pangong in these months
May to JuneThe roads and camps open as the snow retreats, with cold nightsOpening dates change every year, so ask us first
July to SeptemberThe usual window, with the clearest access and the busiest weeksBook early, and keep a spare day
OctoberCrisp air and fewer visitors, but camps start to close and snow can come earlyAsk which camps are still open

What are the permit and safety rules?

  • Pangong lies on the border, so permission is arranged before the trip and original photo ID is checked at checkposts. Our permits and ID guide explains why, and our package pages list inner line permit fees as included.
  • Follow instructions at checkposts and do not photograph military sites or personnel. Do not fly a drone.
  • Altitude is the main risk. Tell your driver at once about a headache, nausea or drowsiness, and be ready to come down.
  • Wind and cold are strong even in summer. Bring layers, a hat, gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses; see our packing list.

What does a day at the lake look like?

  1. Leave the Nubra valley or Leh after an early breakfast and reach the lake by the afternoon.
  2. Settle into camp, rest and have tea, then walk to the shore for sunset.
  3. Eat early, wrap up warm and look at the sky.
  4. Rise for sunrise, then return to Leh over Chang La, with Hemis, Thiksey and Shey Palace on the way.

To compare circuits, see our Ladakh tour packages, the wider Ladakh guide and Nubra Valley. Send your dates and group size through our contact page, and we confirm routes and permits before you pay.

Questions travellers ask

How high is Pangong Lake?

About 4,350 m, or 14,270 ft, which is higher than Leh. That is why we put Pangong after your nights in Leh and Nubra. Tell your driver at once if you get a headache, nausea or drowsiness, and see a doctor first if you have a heart or lung condition.

How far is Pangong from Leh?

About 155 km on our package pages, usually a full day of driving over Chang La, with stops. Conditions on the road change, so we check them on the morning of the drive and tell you the likely timing. The Nubra to Pangong road adds its own long day.

Can I stay overnight at Pangong Lake?

Yes, in camps, cottages and guesthouses, which are simple and limited. An overnight stay gives you sunset, a clear night sky and sunrise, which a day trip cannot. Book early in midsummer, and ask us how your group should be acclimatised first.

Do I need a permit for Pangong?

Yes. Pangong is a border area, and permission is arranged before the trip. The rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change. Our Ladakh packages list inner line permit fees as included, and we confirm what your group needs once you send names and ID details.

Why is the water so blue, and can I swim in it?

The clear, salty water and the bare mountains around it make the colours shift with the light. We do not recommend swimming, because the water is very cold, the altitude is high and help is far away. Enjoy the shore and the view instead.

Can I visit Pangong in winter?

We do not plan trips there in winter. The lake freezes, camps close, the temperature drops far below freezing and Chang La carries heavy snow. Roughly June to September is the usual window. Ask us about your dates and we say honestly what is open.
