About
Further from the road than Pangong and quieter for it, Tsomoriri is ringed by Changpa nomad camps and grazing kiang at 15,000ft — Ladakh’s high-altitude lake at its most remote and pristine.

Let us plan your trip
Tsomoriri lies in a high, dry basin, with bare brown hills on every side and the water changing from deep blue to pale grey as the weather moves. The village of Korzok sits on the western shore, with a monastery and a few houses, and Changpa herders move through the area with their animals. Wild asses called kiang graze on the plains, and the shallow water and marshes draw geese, ducks, grebes and gulls. Our package page describes it as a protected wetland and a breeding ground for several species.
Few places in Ladakh feel as open or as quiet. The attraction is not a list of sights but the stillness, the light on the hills and the sense of distance from everywhere else.
| Tsomoriri | Pangong | |
|---|---|---|
| The feel | Remote, quiet, with nomad camps, birds and open plains | A long lake famous for its changing colours, with more camps |
| From Leh | A long day via Tsokar and Taglang La | About 155 km via Chang La, a full day |
| Visitors | Fewer, with limited stays | More, especially in midsummer |
| Stays | Simple camps and guesthouses around Korzok | Camps and cottages along the shore |
| Good for | Birdwatchers, photographers and travellers who want solitude | First-time visitors who want the classic lake |
Many travellers see both. See our Pangong page for the other lake. If you only have time for one lake and it is your first trip, we usually suggest Pangong.
| Route | What it is like | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Pangong to Tsomoriri | A long crossing of the Changthang plateau, past a small lake and a high pass on our itinerary | A full day; start early |
| Hanle to Tsomoriri | About 130 km over Nurpa Pass at 16,100 ft and across the Mahe bridge; four to five hours | Used on our Hanle and Tsomoriri package |
| Tsomoriri to Leh | About 220 to 240 km via Tso Kar and Taglang La, seven to eight hours | Allow the whole day and keep a spare day |
Roads are rough in places and fuel and cash are scarce, so you should not drive alone. Conditions change with weather, so we check them on the morning of each drive. Hanle is covered on our Hanle page.
Stays are simple. Our Tsomoriri package pages list four tiers: Ibex Guest House for Standard, Hotel Lake View for Deluxe, Tsomoriri Camps & Resorts for Super Deluxe and Korzok Lounge for Premium. Expect basic bathrooms, heaters rather than central heating, limited evening power and weak or no mobile signal. Book early in midsummer, because places are few.

| November to April | Deep cold, snow on the passes and shut camps | We do not plan trips here in these months |
| May to June | Roads and camps open as the snow retreats; birds arrive | Opening dates change every year, so ask us first |
| July to September | The usual window; long days and the clearest roads | Book early and keep a spare day |
| October | Cold, clear and quiet, with early snow possible | Ask which camps are still open |
Tsomoriri is higher than Leh and Pangong, and you sleep there after a long drive, so we place it late in the trip, after several nights at height. Drink water, eat lightly and tell your driver about a headache, nausea or breathlessness at once. Talk to your doctor before booking if you have a heart, lung or blood pressure condition. The area is close to the border, so a permit is needed. Our package pages list inner line permit fees as included, and we confirm what your group needs once you send names and ID details. See our permits and ID guide.
Compare the options on our Ladakh tour packages page, read the wider Ladakh guide, and send your dates and group size through our contact page. We confirm roads, stays and permits before you pay.
About 4,500 m, or roughly 15,000 ft, which is higher than Leh and Pangong. That is why we put it late in the trip, after several nights at height. Tell your driver at once about a headache, nausea or breathlessness.
About 220 to 240 km, a day of seven to eight hours via Tso Kar and Taglang La on our itinerary. From Hanle it is about 130 km and four to five hours. Road conditions change, so we check them on the morning of each drive.
Tsomoriri is quieter and further from Leh, with nomad camps, wild asses and water birds rather than the famous colour changes and larger crowds of Pangong. Stays are fewer and simpler. Many travellers see both, but first-time visitors often start with Pangong.
Yes, in simple camps and guesthouses near Korzok. Our package pages list a stay for each tier. An overnight stay gives you sunset, a clear night sky and sunrise, which a day trip cannot. Book early in midsummer.
Yes. It is a border area, and permission is arranged before the trip. The rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change. Our Ladakh package pages list inner line permit fees as included, and we confirm what your group needs.
Roughly June to September, when the passes are clear of snow. Birds are often best in early summer. The lake region is extremely cold in winter and the camps close, so we do not plan trips there then. We confirm what is open for your dates.
