Turtuk

Opened to travellers only in 2010, Turtuk is a green surprise in the cold desert — apricot orchards, stone Balti homes and a culture closer to Baltistan than Tibet. Ladakh’s most offbeat corner.

Key facts

Region
The far north of Nubra Valley on the Shyok river, close to the Line of Control, with a Balti Muslim culture
Altitude
About 3,000 m, lower than Leh, so the air is easier here than at Pangong
From Nubra
About 80 km and two to three hours each way on our itineraries
Good months
Roughly June to September; the apricot orchards are especially pretty in late summer
Limited or closed
A permit is needed, winters are cold, and access beyond the main village is controlled
How long people stay
A day trip from Nubra is the minimum; a night in the village gives more time
How we plan it
As a day trip from Nubra on the Leh, Nubra, Turtuk and Pangong loop, with an overnight stay as an option

Let us plan your trip

What makes Turtuk different from the rest of Ladakh?

Turtuk feels like another country within the same region. The people are Balti, with their own language, food and dress, and most are Muslim, so the monasteries, prayer flags and Tibetan culture of Leh and Nubra give way to mosques, flat-roofed stone houses and terraced fields. Our itinerary notes that families here are divided by the border, and that the village has been under Indian control since 1971. It opened to Indian visitors in 2010, which is recent, so it still feels less visited than the rest of Nubra.

Green is the first surprise. After the dry hills and sand dunes of Nubra, Turtuk has irrigation channels, apricot trees, barley and walnut. Our package page says the village is known for its apricots and for a sword dance performed on important occasions and at weddings.

How do you get to Turtuk?

StretchWhat it is likeOur advice
Leh to Nubra ValleyAbout 135 km and five hours over Khardung La, on our itinerariesSee our Nubra Valley page; Turtuk is not a Leh day trip
Nubra to TurtukAbout 80 km and two to three hours each way along the Shyok river, through army-regulated stretchesStart after an early breakfast and expect checkposts
Turtuk back to NubraThe same road in the afternoon, with light for photographsLeave in time to be back before dark

Our Amazing Ladakh with Turtuk package treats the village as a day trip from Nubra, returning in the evening. Roads are narrow in places and conditions change, so we check them on the morning of each drive.

What is there to do in Turtuk?

  • Walk through the lanes, past stone houses, irrigation channels and fields. Go slowly; the village is a place to live in, not a set.
  • Look at the orchards and, in season, buy dried apricots and other local products.
  • Try Balti food. Our package page says Baltis are known for their cooking, so ask your host what is made at home.
  • Climb to a viewpoint above the village to look across the Shyok valley toward the border. Follow local instructions about what you may photograph.
  • Greet people and ask before you take their picture. Dress modestly, and enter a mosque only if you are invited.

Day trip or overnight in Turtuk?

ChoiceWhat you getWhat to weigh
Day trip from NubraSeveral hours in the village, back in Nubra by eveningAbout five to six hours of driving and a rushed lunch
One night in TurtukAn evening and morning in the village, with softer light and time to talk to your hostsSimple stays, shared bathrooms and a longer schedule

Our package FAQ says you can ask for an overnight stay in Turtuk instead of a day trip. We prefer the night when the group is acclimatised and has a spare day. Homestays and guesthouses are simple, meals are home-cooked, and signal can be weak. Book early in midsummer.

What are the permit and conduct rules?

  • Turtuk lies in a border zone, and permission is arranged before the trip. Our package pages list inner line permit fees as included, and we confirm what your group needs once you send names and ID details. See our permits and ID guide.
  • Carry original photo ID, because checkposts ask for it.
  • Do not photograph military sites or personnel, and do not fly a drone.
  • Respect local custom: dress modestly, avoid public displays of affection and ask before photographing people.
  • Stay within the areas you are permitted to visit and follow instructions at checkposts.

Questions travellers ask

What makes Turtuk different from the rest of Ladakh?

Turtuk is a Balti village with its own language, food and dress, and a Muslim culture, unlike the Tibetan Buddhist east of Ladakh. It also has terraced fields and apricot orchards, and it opened to Indian visitors only in 2010. Stone houses and a quiet pace complete the contrast.

How far is Turtuk from Nubra Valley?

About 80 km each way, and two to three hours on our itineraries. The road follows the Shyok river and passes army-regulated stretches. Nubra itself is about 135 km and five hours from Leh, so Turtuk is always planned as part of a Nubra stay, not a Leh day trip.

Do I need a permit to visit Turtuk?

Yes. Turtuk is in a border zone, and permission is arranged before the trip. Our packages list inner line permit fees as included. Rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change, so we confirm what your group needs once you send names and ID details.

When is the best time to visit Turtuk?

Roughly June to September, when Khardung La and the valley road are open. Late summer is especially pretty because the orchards are in fruit. Winters are cold and the high passes can close. We confirm what is open for your dates before you pay.

Can I stay overnight in Turtuk?

Yes. Our packages treat it as a day trip, but an overnight stay is possible, in simple homestays or guesthouses. It gives you an evening and morning in the village. Tell us if you want it, and we check availability for your dates.

Is Turtuk suitable for families and older travellers?

Many families go, but the 80 km each way on narrow roads is a long day, and the village involves walking on uneven lanes. Turtuk is lower than Leh, which helps with the altitude. Tell us your group's health and pace, and we advise.
