About
Where the Shyok and Nubra rivers meet, sand dunes rise beneath snow peaks and double-humped Bactrian camels graze like a mirage. Diskit’s cliffside monastery watches over it all.

Nubra Valley
Let us plan your trip
The road leaves Leh, climbs to Khardung La, a pass above 5,000 m, and drops into the Shyok valley. Our itineraries give about 135 km and five hours for the drive, with a short stop at the top. Do not linger at the pass, because the air is very thin there. From Nubra you can return to Leh the same way or go on to Pangong by the Shyok road, as our Ladakh Expedition with Nubra & Pangong does.
| Leg | What it is like | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Leh to Nubra | A long climb, a high pass and a steep descent on a road that can be rough | Start early and cross the pass in daylight |
| Within the valley | Short drives between Hunder, Diskit and nearby villages | Keep the drives short and the afternoons slow |
| Nubra to Pangong | A remote road beside the Shyok river | Allow a full day; if the road is shut we use an alternative and tell you of any change in cost |
| Nubra to Turtuk | The road runs on beside the river towards the border | A full-day round trip; see Turtuk |
Stays are mostly tented camps and small cottages near Hunder and Diskit, with meals in camp. Expect warm bedding, simple bathrooms and a heater, and expect nights to be cold. Mobile signal depends on your network. Camps open in summer and close for the cold months, so book early for midsummer. Every Ladakh package lists its Nubra stays in four tiers, from Standard to Premium; see our Ladakh tour packages page.
| Months | What to expect | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| November to April | Cold, with snow on Khardung La and most camps shut | We do not plan trips here in these months |
| May to June | The pass and camps reopen, the days are warm and the nights are cold | Opening dates change each year, so ask us first |
| July to September | The usual window, with green fields and open roads | Busy; book early and keep a spare day |
| October | Clear, cold and quiet, with golden poplars in the villages | Snow can close the pass at short notice |
Two nights is the sensible plan: arrive in time for the dunes at the end of day one, see Diskit on day two, then move on. Add a night if you want to go to Turtuk without rushing. Our shorter circuits, such as the Short Trip to Ladakh, fit Nubra into a four-night trip, while Amazing Ladakh with Turtuk adds the border village. For the wider picture, read our Ladakh guide and Leh guide.
Send your dates and group size through our contact page, and we confirm the pass, camps and permits before you pay.
About 135 km and five hours on our itineraries, over Khardung La, with a short stop at the top. Road and weather conditions change, and a rough or slow patch can add time, so we check on the morning of the drive and tell you when to be ready.
Two nights is the sensible plan. One night means a five-hour drive each way for a short stay, and two lets you see the dunes at the end of the day and Diskit the next morning. Add a night if you want to visit Turtuk.
Yes. It is a border region, and permission is arranged before you go. Rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change. Our Ladakh packages list inner line permit fees as included, and we confirm what your group needs when you send names and ID details.
Yes, short camel rides are offered near Hunder, and our packages include a camel ride at the dunes. Ride late in the day when it is cooler, wear sunscreen and warm layers, and treat the animals gently. Availability depends on the season.
It is very high, above 5,000 m, so we keep the stop at the top short and cross only after you have spent nights in Leh. Tell your driver at once about a headache, nausea or breathlessness. See a doctor first if you have a heart or lung condition.
We do not plan trips here in winter. Snow can close Khardung La, camps shut and temperatures fall far below freezing. Roughly June to September is the usual window. Tell us your dates and we say honestly what is open.
