Questions about this trip

What makes Hanle special for stargazing?

Hanle sits at over 4,300m with minimal light pollution and exceptionally clear, dry air, making it one of the best sites in India for astronomy — home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, one of the highest-altitude optical/infrared observatories in the world.

Can I actually visit the observatory itself?

Public access to the observatory facility is limited since it’s an active research site, but the surrounding area — part of the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve — offers exceptional naked-eye and telescope star-gazing, which is the core experience on this package.

What is the best time for this trip?

Ladakh, including Hanle, is accessible roughly June through September. Clearer, drier autumn nights (late August–September) often give the best stargazing conditions, though summer nights are also good.

How is altitude sickness managed, given Hanle’s elevation?

Leh sits at approximately 3,500m and Hanle even higher, so acclimatization on Day 1 is essential and non-negotiable. We recommend staying hydrated and informing your guide of any symptoms — our team is experienced in managing high-altitude travel across this entire route.

Can I customise this itinerary?

Yes. You can add an extra night in Hanle for more stargazing time, adjust the Pangong or Nubra stops, or upgrade your accommodation category — share your preferences via WhatsApp and we’ll tailor a quote within 30 minutes.
