What do camps and cottages usually offer?

Our page lists meals, hot water and heating as the basics, and attached bathrooms and better bedding in the luxury camps. Everything here arrives by road over high passes, so supplies are limited and amenities are plainer than in a Leh hotel.

How do you prepare for the altitude and the cold?

Pangong is higher than Leh, at about 4,350 m, so it comes after your Leh nights, never before. Our hotels in Leh page explains how we plan those first days.

• Pack warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, a hat and good sunglasses: the sun is strong and the wind is cold.
• Walk slowly, drink water, and skip alcohol on arrival.
• Carry a torch and a power bank, because power at the camp can be limited.
• Tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book, and ask a doctor.

Do you need a permit for Pangong?

Yes. Pangong lies near the border, so Inner Line Permits are required for visitors, and the places you may visit are set by the authorities. When do the camps open?

Camps open roughly from June to September, when the passes are clear and the weather allows. They close in the cold months, and the lake freezes in winter. Early and late season nights can drop well below freezing, so ask about heating whatever the month.
