Let us plan your trip

Why do people go to Hanle?

Hanle is a village of low stone houses on a vast, empty plateau, with a small monastery on a hill above it. Few lights and very dry, thin air make the night sky unusually clear. The Indian Astronomical Observatory stands on a ridge nearby, and the area is now treated as a dark sky reserve. Most visitors come for one thing, the sky after dark, and stay for the silence.

How do you get to Hanle?

RouteWhat it is likeOur advice
Pangong to HanleAbout 175 km and six to seven hours on our itinerary, past Chushul village and over Tsaga La at 15,200 ftThe way our Delightful Ladakh with Hanle package goes; start early
Hanle to LehA long drive along the Indus valley, past Loma, Mahe and the small town of ChumathangAllow a full day and keep a spare day in the plan
Leh to Hanle directMost of a day's drivePossible, but we put Hanle later in the trip, after your body has adjusted

Roads are rough in places and conditions change with weather, so we check them on the morning of each drive. Fuel and cash are scarce, and you should not plan to drive alone. See Pangong for the lake leg.

What is the stargazing like?

  • Go in the days around the new moon if you can. Moonlight washes out the faint stars and the Milky Way.
  • Clear skies are common in the season, but cloud can come, so a second night gives you a spare chance.
  • The cold is sharp even in summer. Wear thermals, a down jacket, a hat, gloves and warm socks, and bring a flask.
  • Bring a torch with a red light so you keep your night vision, and use a phone sparingly.
  • Take a tripod if you want to photograph the sky. A phone on a steady surface can catch the Milky Way.
  • The observatory is a working scientific facility, and access is controlled. We describe what is possible for your dates rather than promise a visit.

What else is there to do at Hanle?

  • Walk up to the monastery for a view over the village and the plateau.
  • Drive across the plateau, where you may see wild asses and other high-altitude animals in open country.
  • Meet the host family and see how people live at this height; ask before you take pictures of people.
  • Watch the sunrise light spread over the rocks, a gentle change after the cold night.
  • Stop at Chumathang on the way back, a small town on the Indus road known for its hot springs.

Where do you stay in Hanle?

Choices are limited: village homestays and a few small guesthouses. Rooms are simple, with shared or basic bathrooms, solar power that may be limited in the evening, warm blankets and weak or no mobile signal. A homestay is part of the experience, and meals are home-cooked. Every package that includes Hanle lists its stay in the Standard to Premium tiers; see our Ladakh tour packages page. Book early in midsummer, because rooms are few.

When should you go to Hanle?

MonthsWhat to expectWhat to weigh
November to AprilExtremely cold, with road snow and most stays shutWe do not plan trips here in these months
May to JuneThe roads and homestays open, with clear skies and cold nightsOpening dates change each year, so ask us first
July to SeptemberThe usual window; some cloud in midsummer, long drives in good weatherPick the week around the new moon if you can
OctoberClear, cold and quiet, with early snow possibleAsk which homestays are still open

How should you handle the altitude?

Hanle is higher than Leh and Pangong, and you sleep there after several nights at height, which is why we place it late in the circuit. Drink water, eat lightly in the evening and tell your driver at once about a headache, nausea or breathlessness. Talk to your doctor before booking if you have a heart, lung or blood pressure condition, if you are pregnant, or if you travel with a young child or an older parent. The nearest hospital is far away.

What are the permit and access rules?

Hanle is a border area, and permission is arranged before the trip. Rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change. Our permits and ID guide explains the pattern, and our package pages list inner line permit fees as included. Carry original photo ID, follow instructions at checkposts, and do not photograph military sites or personnel.

What does a night at Hanle look like?

  1. Arrive in the afternoon after the long drive, settle into the homestay and have tea.
  2. Walk to the monastery before dusk.
  3. Eat early, then wrap up and go outside when the sky has darkened.
  4. Sleep, then rise for the sunrise, a late breakfast and the drive onwards.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Hanle from Leh?

It is most of a day's drive from Leh up the Indus valley, and our package route comes in from Pangong instead, about 175 km and six to seven hours. Roads can be rough and weather changes, so we check conditions on the morning of the drive and keep a spare day.

Do I need a permit for Hanle?

Yes. Hanle is a border area, and permission is arranged before the trip. The rules differ for Indian and foreign nationals and can change. Our packages list inner line permit fees as included, and we confirm what your group needs once you send names and ID details.

Can I visit the Indian Astronomical Observatory?

Access to the observatory is controlled because it is a working scientific facility, and we cannot promise a visit. We tell you what is possible for your dates, and the main draw is the dark sky from the village, which needs no special access.

When is the sky darkest at Hanle?

In the days around the new moon, when moonlight does not wash out the faint stars. Clear nights are common in the season, but cloud can come, so a second night gives you a spare chance. Ask us to plan around the moon for your dates.

Can I do Hanle as a day trip from Leh?

We do not advise it. The drive takes most of a day each way, the altitude is high and the point of going is the night sky. Plan at least one night, and place Hanle later in the circuit, after Leh and Pangong.

Can I visit Hanle in winter?

We do not plan trips to Hanle in winter. It is extremely cold, snow affects the roads and many stays shut. Roughly June to September is the usual window. Tell us your dates and we say honestly what is open.
