Katra to Srinagar Taxi: Fare, Time and Train Compared
Most people who search for a Katra to Srinagar taxi have just finished the Vaishno Devi yatra and want to carry on into Kashmir. There are two good ways to do it: a private taxi on the highway, or the Vande Bharat train. This page, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, compares them honestly, explains what a taxi fare depends on, and shows what the day on the road looks like. We do not print a fare, because it changes, and we would rather confirm one for your date than quote a number that is out of date.

How long is the drive from Katra to Srinagar?
Plan on a full day. The distance is roughly 250 to 280 km, and it varies with the route and the pickup point. The time is the better guide: commonly six to nine hours including stops. Our Jammu to Srinagar taxi page gives that stretch of NH-44 as about 270 km and six to seven hours, and Katra sits off the highway at the start of the climb, so it is a longer day.
| Stretch | What it is like | What slows it down |
|---|---|---|
| Katra to Udhampur | A hill road down from the shrine town, about an hour | Pilgrim traffic, buses, a slow start |
| Udhampur to Chenani and Patnitop | NH-44 through the Chenani–Nashri tunnel, then the hill station of Patnitop | Trucks, fog, roadworks |
| Patnitop to Ramban and Banihal | A steep stretch beside the Chenab river, the one most prone to landslides | Rain, rockfalls, vehicle queues, snow in winter |
| Banihal to Qazigund | The Banihal–Qazigund tunnel into the Kashmir Valley | Queues and weather at the tunnel mouths |
| Qazigund to Srinagar | Flat valley road through Anantnag and Awantipora, with orchards and, in autumn, saffron fields near Pampore | City traffic into Srinagar, especially in the evening |
We aim to be through the hills and the tunnels in daylight, which usually means leaving Katra in the morning. If you come down from the shrine late, we suggest a night in Katra and an early start, not a night drive.
Taxi or Vande Bharat: which should you take?
| Taxi on NH-44 | Vande Bharat train | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | A full day: commonly six to nine hours with stops | About three hours |
| Cost | Quoted per vehicle, so it works out well for four or more with luggage | A fare per seat, set by class; read it on IRCTC |
| Door to door | Yes: from your Katra hotel to your Srinagar hotel, houseboat or airport | No: you reach the station at Katra and leave from Srinagar station, on the edge of the city, then need a pickup |
| Luggage | Easy, and the vehicle is yours | Limited to what you can carry; porter help at stations |
| Stops | At your pace, for tunnels, Patnitop or a meal | None |
| Comfort | Hairpins on the hill stretches can upset a sensitive stomach | Smooth, with no road bends |
| Disruption | Landslides, snow and queues can close or slow the highway | Weather or track issues can also delay a train; check the day before |
| Best for | Groups, families with luggage, older travellers who want a vehicle to the door | Travellers who want speed and a calm ride, and who are comfortable with a station pickup |
Our honest view: for one or two people with light bags, the train is the easier day. For a family of four to six with luggage, or a group, a private taxi is comfortable and often better value, because you pay per vehicle, not per seat. Timetable, days of running and fares for the train change, so read them on IRCTC for your date. Our Kashmir tour package from Katra guide sets out the train in more detail, and our how to reach Kashmir guide covers the other ways in.
What does the fare depend on?
We do not print a fixed fare here. The same route can price very differently depending on a handful of things, so compare quotes by these, not by the headline number.
- The vehicle. A sedan costs less than an Innova, and a tempo traveller costs more again.
- One way or return. A one-way trip is priced differently from a return, and the driver's journey back matters to the price.
- The season. Peak weeks, Navratri and school holidays push demand up, and winter conditions add risk.
- The stops. A planned stop at Patnitop or a long meal changes the hours.
- The drop point. A hotel in the city, a houseboat on Dal Lake, the airport and Srinagar station are different drops.
- What is included. Our taxi packages include a dedicated vehicle with an experienced driver, fuel, toll tax and driver allowance, so ask any other operator whether theirs does, plus parking and night charges.
Ask too which taxi will actually pick you up in Katra. In some towns, local taxi unions restrict pickups by outside vehicles, and we tell you before you pay who sends the car and where it meets you. Send us the details and we quote on WhatsApp within the time our site states.
Which vehicle suits your group?
| Group and luggage | Vehicle | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Two or three travellers, light bags | Swift Dzire or Etios sedan | Count the bags; a sedan boot holds fewer than people expect |
| Four to six travellers, normal luggage | Innova or Innova Crysta | More legroom and boot space for a long day |
| Seven to twelve travellers | 8-seater or 14-seater tempo traveller | One vehicle for a family group; push-back seats for the long day |
| Larger groups | 17-seater tempo traveller | Confirm luggage space |
What is worth stopping for on the way?
Our Jammu to Srinagar page lists the Chenani–Nashri tunnel viewpoint, the hill station of Patnitop and roadside eateries serving local food as popular stops. A tea stop at Patnitop is a good way to break the day. After Qazigund, the valley opens out into orchards. In autumn, the saffron fields near Pampore are in flower, and we can stop if the timing is right. Stops add time, so tell your driver early how long you want to spend.
When can the road change your plan?
NH-44 is a major highway and generally well kept, but the Ramban stretch is prone to landslides, and heavy rain or snow, mostly between November and March, can close the road or hold traffic for hours. Nobody can promise the road on a given day. We check the highway on the morning of your trip, and if it is closed, we hold the departure, not push through. Keep a spare day in your plan and do not book a flight on the day you arrive in Srinagar. Our safety guide explains how advisories and road notices work.
How does the taxi fit into a Vaishno Devi and Kashmir trip?
Most pilgrims do Katra first, add a buffer day, and then take the train or taxi to Srinagar to begin a Kashmir package. Our Vaishno Devi and Kashmir package page sets out the whole sequence, our Katra rooms page covers the nights, and our Vaishno Devi helicopter guide explains how the helicopter option works. The Kashmir packages begin with a pickup in Srinagar, so the road leg is a separate line on your quote. Our site's starting price for the Kashmir part is ₹8,550 per person.
What is the next step?
Send your Katra pickup point and date, the number of travellers and bags, your Srinagar drop, and whether you want one-way or return through our contact page. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. We quote the taxi as a separate line, and if you want the full plan, we add the Kashmir package. See our Kashmir taxi service page for the fleet.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a taxi from Katra to Srinagar take?
Plan for a full day: commonly six to nine hours including stops, over roughly 250 to 280 km on NH-44. Landslides, snow, queues at the tunnels or heavy traffic can add hours. We aim to be through the hills and tunnels in daylight, so we usually leave in the morning.
How much is a taxi from Katra to Srinagar?
The fare depends on the vehicle, whether you go one way or return, the season, your stops and the drop point, so we do not print one figure. We quote on WhatsApp and confirm before you pay. Compare quotes by what they include: fuel, toll, driver allowance, parking and night charges.
Is it better to take the Vande Bharat or a taxi?
The train takes about three hours and suits one or two travellers with light bags. A taxi takes a full day but goes door to door, carries luggage easily, lets you stop, and is priced per vehicle, which suits four or more. Read the train timetable and fare on IRCTC for your date.
Can I book a one-way taxi from Katra to Srinagar?
Yes. Our Jammu to Srinagar taxi service offers one-way and round-trip options, and we quote Katra in the same way. A one-way fare is priced differently from a return. Tell us the pickup point, date, group size and where you want to be dropped in Srinagar.
Does the taxi stop at Patnitop?
It can. Patnitop is one of the popular stops our Jammu to Srinagar page lists, along with the Chenani–Nashri tunnel viewpoint and roadside eateries. Tell your driver early how long you want to stop, because stops add to a day that is already long.
Is the Katra to Srinagar road open in winter?
Usually, but not always. Snow and landslides, mostly between November and March, can close or slow the highway, and nobody can promise it on a given day. We check the road on the morning of your trip, and if it is shut we hold the departure. Keep a spare day in your plan.
How much luggage fits in the taxi?
A sedan boot holds fewer bags than most people expect, so tell us how many bags you carry. For four to six travellers, an Innova has more room. For large groups, a tempo traveller has push-back seats and a luggage area. We choose the vehicle once we know your bags.
Where will the taxi drop us in Srinagar?
At your hotel, your Dal Lake houseboat, the airport or the railway station, as you choose. If you stay on a houseboat, give us the ghat number, so the driver can find you. Our Kashmir packages begin with a pickup in Srinagar, so the road leg is quoted as its own line.
