Key facts
- Region
- Katra, the base for Vaishno Devi in Jammu, joined to Srinagar and the Kashmir Valley by the Vande Bharat rail link and by NH-44
- Best for
- Pilgrims who want to continue to Kashmir after the yatra, and families doing Vaishno Devi and a valley holiday in one journey
- How long people stay
- About eight to ten days for the yatra, a buffer day and a four-night Kashmir package
- How we plan it
- Katra first, a buffer day after the yatra, then the train to Srinagar and a Kashmir package, ending with a flight home from Srinagar
- Train versus road
- The train takes about three hours; the road is a full day, commonly six to nine hours with stops, depending on traffic and weather
- Price basis
- Kashmir packages are priced from their own tables. The Katra nights, the train and the road leg are separate lines
Katra is where the Vaishno Devi yatra begins, and many pilgrims ask the same question on the way down: could we see Kashmir while we are this far north? You can. The two halves of the trip are joined by a train that now runs from Katra to Srinagar, and by the highway. This page is for travellers who start from Katra. We are the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, and our packages start in Srinagar, so the Katra leg is planned and quoted separately. If you want the pilgrimage and the valley in one plan, read this alongside our Vaishno Devi and Kashmir package guide.
How do you get from Katra to Srinagar?
| Way | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Vande Bharat train | About three hours | Katra is a stop on the line. It runs on set days at set times, and both change, so read the timetable and book on IRCTC for your date. The train ends at Srinagar railway station, on the edge of the city at Nowgam, a few kilometres from the centre |
| Private taxi or car | A full day; commonly six to nine hours with stops | The route follows NH-44 through the Chenani–Nashri tunnel, past Ramban and Banihal, and through the Banihal–Qazigund tunnel. Landslides or snow can close stretches, and stops are at your pace |
| Fly via Jammu | Adds a taxi and a flight | Katra has no airport. Jammu airport is about 50 km away, so this suits travellers with a flight already booked, not a quick onward route |
For most people the train is the easier choice: a few hours instead of a day, with no hairpin bends. The road suits large groups with luggage, anyone who wants to stop at Patnitop or the tunnel viewpoint that our Jammu to Srinagar taxi page lists, and travellers who cannot get a train seat. Our Katra to Srinagar taxi page sets the road beside the train in more detail, and our how to reach Kashmir guide covers the other routes.
Should you do Katra first or Kashmir first?
We suggest Katra first. The yatra is the half most likely to run late, because queues, weather and your own pace decide when you come down. Kashmir packages then start after a train or taxi to Srinagar, and each ends with an airport drop, so you fly home from Srinagar. If you go Kashmir first, you must arrange the journey to Katra yourself, and the package ends at the airport, not at the station. Whichever order you pick, keep a buffer day, and never book a train for the day you come down from the shrine.
Which Kashmir package suits a traveller from Katra, and what does it cost?
Every figure is copied from the package's own price table, per person on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar. Each package lists daily breakfast and dinner, a private vehicle, a one-hour shikara ride, Srinagar airport pickup and drop, and all taxes. Flights, lunches, the Gulmarg gondola tickets and entry fees are extra.
| Package | Nights | 2 travellers | 4 travellers | 6 travellers | Why it suits the Katra traveller |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3N/4D Quick Getaway | 3 | ₹11,950 | ₹9,120 | ₹8,100 | The shortest add-on after the yatra, with Gulmarg and Pahalgam as day trips |
| 4N/5D Kashmir Classic | 4 | ₹13,800 | ₹10,650 | ₹9,490 | Adds Sonmarg, with every night based in Srinagar |
| 5N/6D Explorer | 5 | ₹15,900 | ₹12,400 | ₹11,320 | A relaxed circuit with a Pahalgam night and a houseboat finale |
The package pages print airport pickup and drop, so for a train arrival, send us the train and the day and we quote a pickup from the station. If you prefer the road, we quote the Katra to Srinagar taxi on request. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. For a family trip, start from our family packages; for older parents, our senior citizen packages.
What does an eight-day Katra and Kashmir plan look like?
- Day 1, Katra. Arrive, check in, rest. For rooms, see our Katra Vaishno Devi rooms page.
- Day 2, the yatra. Registration, the climb or a helicopter option, and darshan, on the Shrine Board's arrangements.
- Day 3, buffer. Rest, laundry and slack. This is the day that saves the plan if the yatra ran late.
- Day 4, train to Srinagar. An afternoon in Srinagar: the Mughal gardens and a shikara ride, as in the package's first day.
- Day 5, Sonmarg. A day trip of about three hours each way, with the pony ride to Thajiwas Glacier optional.
- Day 6, Gulmarg. About 1.5 hours from Srinagar, with the gondola if it is running.
- Day 7, Pahalgam. About two hours from Srinagar, with the Lidder River and valley.
- Day 8, departure. Airport drop in Srinagar.
What does the Katra leg cost?
We do not print a figure here, because the train fare, the taxi fare and the Katra room rate change with the date, the class and the season. Read the live train fare on IRCTC. For the taxi and the rooms, send us your dates and group size, and we quote them as separate lines next to the package. Yatra registration and any helicopter ticket are made through the Shrine Board's own channels, not through us; see our Vaishno Devi helicopter guide for how that works.
How do the seasons change the plan?
Katra and Kashmir are opposites in weather. In summer, Katra is hot and Srinagar is pleasant. In winter, Katra is mild and Srinagar is cold, with snow possible in Gulmarg and Sonmarg. Pack for both, or leave warm clothes in Katra and collect them, if the plan returns there. The highway can be hit by landslides or snow, mostly in winter, and nobody can promise a road or a train on a given day. The Katra rush peaks at Navratri and in school holidays, so book rooms early. Our month-by-month guide covers the Kashmir half.
What should you ask before you book?
- Which train, which day, and who meets you at Srinagar station.
- How many people and how much luggage, so we pick the right vehicle.
- Whether a buffer night is in the plan after the yatra.
- What heating and hot water the Srinagar hotel or houseboat has, if you travel outside summer.
- What changes if the highway or the train is disrupted on your day.
What is the next step?
Send your dates, the number of travellers, where you start and whether you prefer the train or the road through our contact page. We plan the Katra nights, the transfer and a Kashmir package around your yatra day, and send a written quote. Coming from Jammu rather than Katra? See our Kashmir tour package from Jammu guide.
Questions travellers ask
Is there a train from Katra to Srinagar?
Yes. The Vande Bharat links Katra with Srinagar in about three hours. It runs on set days at set times, and both can change, so check IRCTC for your date and book early in busy weeks. The train ends at Srinagar railway station, on the edge of the city; tell us the train and we quote a pickup.
How long does it take to drive from Katra to Srinagar?
Plan for a full day, commonly six to nine hours with stops, depending on traffic, weather and where you pause. The road runs along NH-44 through two long tunnels. Landslides or snow can close stretches, mostly in winter. We quote a private taxi on request.
Can I do Vaishno Devi and Kashmir in one trip?
Yes. Katra first, then the train or road to Srinagar and a Kashmir package, works well, with a buffer day after the yatra. The yatra runs on the Shrine Board's arrangements, and the Kashmir part on ours. Our Vaishno Devi and Kashmir page sets out the whole sequence.
Does TDI pick up from Katra?
Our Jammu to Srinagar taxi page says we offer plans that include a Katra stop for pilgrims on the way to Srinagar. Send us your dates and group size, and we quote a Katra pickup. The Kashmir packages themselves begin with a pickup in Srinagar, so the Katra leg is a separate line.
How much does a Kashmir tour package from Katra cost?
The Kashmir part is priced from our package tables, from ₹11,950 per person for two on the 3N/4D, with lower per-person prices for four and six. The train or taxi from Katra, the Katra rooms and flights are extra. We send a written quote for your dates before you pay.
Which month is good for Katra and Kashmir together?
May to October is gentler for Kashmir, but Katra is hot in summer and busy at Navratri. March and October sit between the extremes. Winter suits snow lovers who accept cold and possible road closures. Pick by what matters most to your group, and we advise on your dates.
What if the yatra takes longer than planned?
That is why we add a buffer day. The queues, the weather and your pace decide when you come down, and a train booked for the same day can be lost. Keep the buffer, and tell us early if the plan slips. We re-time the Srinagar pickup and the package start.
