Getting from Delhi to Srinagar
Delhi has the busiest air link to Srinagar of any city, with several flights a day from the capital's main airport, and the flight itself takes about an hour and a half. That makes a Friday-night departure and a Monday-morning return realistic if you want a short break. A road trip via Jammu is possible, about 850 km, and is best treated as a one-way adventure combined with a flight home, since the mountain road is long. Trains and rail links to Katra, then onward by road or rail, also exist, and timetables change, so check the current schedule. In winter, Delhi's fog can delay or cancel flights, so avoid tight onward connections and consider flying a day early.
When Delhi travellers go
Delhi's heat makes May and June the classic escape, with green meadows and mild days in the hills, and it is also the busiest and most expensive period. October to December is the other favourite, with chinar colour in autumn and the first snow in Gulmarg by December. January and February suit snow lovers who can accept cold and some disruption. July and August bring rain and yatra traffic, which many Delhi families skip. School holidays and long weekends fill hotels, so book two to three months ahead for those dates.
What travellers from Delhi usually ask for
Delhi travellers tend to be short on time and long on expectations, so they ask for a clear, compact plan: what to see first, what to skip and where to stay for the best views. Many are couples and families on their second or third visit who want a quieter place than the main resorts; others come with groups of friends for a weekend. Food is rarely an issue, since North Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are easy to find and hotels cater to them. Honeymooners from Delhi often ask for a houseboat night and a private shikara.
A plan that fits a Delhi schedule
For a long weekend, fly in on Friday, spend Saturday in Srinagar with the gardens and a sunset shikara, drive to Gulmarg on Sunday and fly back on Monday morning. With four or five nights, add Pahalgam and a spare day. Because flights are short, you arrive fresh, so start the first day with an activity. Keep Sunday evening or Monday morning flexible in case weather delays the road to Gulmarg. Our Kashmir 4-day itinerary and 5-day itinerary show how days fit together.
Packages that suit this trip
Most Delhi travellers pick one of three lengths: a short break, a classic first trip or a fuller circuit with an extra day for each place.
| Package | Nights | From, per person (two travellers) |
|---|---|---|
| 3N/4D Kashmir Quick Getaway | 3N/4D | ₹11,950 |
| 4N/5D Kashmir Classic | 4N/5D | ₹13,800 |
| 5N/6D Kashmir Explorer | 5N/6D | ₹15,900 |
Prices are the lowest cell in each package's own price table, per person for two travellers sharing, from Srinagar, as printed on the package page; they change with group size, season and hotel tier, and we confirm the final amount in writing before you pay. Flights are not included.
Practical notes for travellers from Delhi
Delhi winters are cold but dry, and Kashmir winters are colder and often snowy, so pack thermals and waterproof boots from December to February. In May and June, Srinagar is warm at midday and cool at night, so carry a light jacket. Carry ID for every traveller, keep your phone postpaid or ask your operator about coverage, and leave plenty of time at the airport, since security checks can be slow. Plan to land in Srinagar in daylight where you can.
Which places to see first
If it is your first trip from Delhi, start with Srinagar's lake and gardens, add Gulmarg for the gondola and meadows and finish with Pahalgam for the river valleys. On a second visit, look at quieter places such as Doodhpathri, Yousmarg and Aharbal, which are an easy day from Srinagar and rarely crowded. Our hidden gems guide lists them, and our Kashmir in winter guide helps if you are going when snow is down.
Making a short trip work
A long weekend rewards preparation. Book the first-night hotel and the airport pickup, decide the one big activity for each day and keep a spare hour for lunch. Pick a hotel on the side of the city that suits your flight, since Srinagar traffic can be slow. If you are planning a very short trip, say so, and we suggest what to leave out rather than packing everything in.
How booking works
Send us your dates, the number of travellers and your hotel preferences. We suggest a plan, confirm the stays and the vehicle in writing and tell you what is included and what you pay separately, such as flights, lunches and gondola tickets. Many Delhi travellers book flights first and the land plan after; tell us your flight times and we fit the plan to them.
