If you ask us for one plan for a first visit, this is usually the one. Five days gives each of the valley's four big places its own day, and it still leaves the first evening and the last morning easy. This guide, from the TDI Holiday Ventures planning desk in Srinagar, follows our 4N/5D Kashmir Classic day by day, shows how much effort each day asks of you, and lists the upgrades we suggest when you want more time in the hills.
What does a 5-day Kashmir itinerary cover?
Srinagar, Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, with Dal Lake as the home base. Because you sleep in Srinagar every night, you unpack once. Each excursion is a long drive out and back, and that is the trade-off for the simplicity.
| Day | Route | Drive from Srinagar | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport pickup, Dal Lake houseboat, Mughal gardens, Shankaracharya temple, shikara ride | City only | Houseboat |
| 2 | Sonmarg: the Sindh river road and Thajiwas Glacier | About 3 hours each way | Houseboat |
| 3 | Gulmarg: the gondola and the meadows | About 1.5 hours each way | Houseboat |
| 4 | Pahalgam: the Lidder valley, with optional Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari | About 2 hours each way | Houseboat |
| 5 | Check out and airport drop | City only | Fly out |
For the kilometres and the drive times beyond these, see our Kashmir distance chart.
Day 1: arrival, the lake and the gardens
You are met at the airport and taken to a Dal Lake houseboat. After check-in come the Mughal gardens: Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, with Pari Mahal and Chashme Shahi as shorter stops, then the Shankaracharya temple. A one-hour shikara ride ends the day, and dinner is on the boat. If your flight is late, shorten this to the lake and the boat. Our Dal Lake guide and houseboat guide explain what the stay is like.
Day 2: Sonmarg and Thajiwas Glacier
You drive to Sonmarg, the Meadow of Gold, following the Sindh river through pine forest and alpine scenery. From the base you can ride a pony or walk to Thajiwas Glacier, where snow stays year-round, with the pony fee paid directly. You return to Srinagar by evening. This is the longest drive of the trip, so leave early, carry a layer, and do not plan a hard evening. Our Sonmarg guide and Srinagar to Sonmarg taxi page say more.
Sonmarg is also where the road to Ladakh begins. If that road catches your imagination, our Srinagar to Leh road guide shows the next step.
Day 3: Gulmarg and the gondola
Gulmarg is the shortest drive of the three, about an hour and a half. You ride the gondola's first phase up to Kongdoori for the Pir Panjal views, with tickets bought on site or online, then walk the meadows before heading back. In winter the slopes are white. In summer they are green and open. Our gondola ticket page explains how tickets work and when the lift is closed.
Day 4: Pahalgam and the Lidder valley
You drive to Pahalgam through orchards and saffron fields. The Lidder river runs through the town, and the surrounding valleys are the draw: Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, with ponies to the Baisaran meadow. These trips are paid directly. We suggest choosing two and enjoying them instead of ticking off all of them. See our Pahalgam guide and Pahalgam itinerary.
Day 5: departure
After breakfast you check out and transfer to the airport. Keep the morning free of plans and build in a margin for traffic and airport checks.
How hard is each day?
| Day | Time in the car | Time on foot | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Short city hops | Gentle gardens and a temple climb | Easy |
| 2 | The longest drive of the trip | A short walk or a pony ride | Moderate, mostly from sitting |
| 3 | About 3 hours in all | Meadow walking, some altitude | Easy to moderate |
| 4 | About 4 hours in all | Valley walks, optional ponies | Easy to moderate |
| 5 | Short | None | Easy |
If someone in your party gets car sick, put the Sonmarg and Pahalgam days a day apart, keep the middle day for Gulmarg, and carry water and light snacks.
What does the 4N/5D Classic cost, and what is extra?
| Travellers | Per person, twin sharing, ex-Srinagar | Vehicle on the package |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | ₹13,800 | Etios |
| 4 | ₹10,650 | Rumion |
| 6 | ₹9,490 | Rumion |
| Extra bed | ₹6,370 |
These figures come from the price table at 4N/5D Kashmir Classic. The package includes deluxe rooms as per the hotel list, daily breakfast and dinner, a one-hour shikara ride, airport pickup and drop, a private vehicle for transfers and sightseeing, and all taxes. It excludes airfare, lunch, the gondola tickets, the Betaab, Aru, Chandanwari, Baisaran and Thajiwas trips, guide charges, entrance fees and personal expenses. Costs caused by natural calamities are not covered either. The package lists three hotel tiers but prints one price per group size, so ask which tier a price assumes.
Which upgrades make the five days better?
| Upgrade | What changes | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| A night in Pahalgam | Less driving on the Lidder day, a river evening | 5N/6D Explorer, ₹15,900 per person for two |
| A night in Gulmarg | A relaxed evening on the meadows, a gondola ride without time pressure | 5N/6D Gulmarg Stay, ₹16,300 per person for two |
| A rest day in Srinagar | A morning for the old city or the houseboat | Ask us to re-price an extra night |
| Doodhpathri or Yusmarg | A quiet meadow instead of a crowded one | See Doodhpathri and Yusmarg |
How should different travellers adjust the plan?
- Couples: keep the houseboat and add a candlelit dinner or a private shikara hour. See our honeymoon packages.
- Families with children: put the longest drive early, in the morning, and keep an evening free. See our family packages.
- Older parents: choose the hotel tier with heating and consider dropping the pony rides. See our senior citizen packages.
- Photographers: swap the Mughal gardens for sunrise on the lake and the old city.
When should you go?
Our package page says the Classic suits April to October for the valleys, and December to March when you want snow in Gulmarg and Sonmarg. In winter the Sonmarg day can depend on the road and the snow, so keep a spare day. Snow cannot be promised for any date. Our month-by-month guide and winter guide cover the details.
What is the next step?
Send your dates, the number of travellers, your flights and any upgrades you want through our contact page. Our site says a Srinagar planner replies within 30 minutes. If you have more or fewer days, see our four-day and seven-day itineraries. We confirm the rate for your dates and tell you what is included before you pay.
Questions travellers ask
Is five days enough for Kashmir?
It is enough for the four classics: Srinagar, Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. It does not allow a night in the hills or an offbeat valley such as Doodhpathri or Gurez. For those, plan six or seven days. Five days is a good first visit, not a complete one.
How much does the 5-day Kashmir package cost?
From ₹13,800 per person for two travellers on twin sharing, ex-Srinagar, according to the 4N/5D Classic's price table. For four travellers it is ₹10,650 per person, and for six ₹9,490. An extra bed is ₹6,370. Airfare, lunch and gondola tickets are extra.
Which day should be the Sonmarg day?
Put it on day 2, when you are fresh and the weather is least likely to have changed. Sonmarg is the longest drive and the one most affected by road and weather. If it cannot run, we swap it with another day or a spare day.
Can we stay a night in Pahalgam or Gulmarg on this itinerary?
Yes, but it is a different package. The Explorer includes a night in Pahalgam and the Gulmarg Stay includes a night in Gulmarg. We can also re-price the Classic with an extra night. Ask for the rate on your dates.
Is the 5-day itinerary good for a honeymoon?
It works well. You get a houseboat night, the Mughal gardens and three scenic days. Many couples prefer a night in Pahalgam or Gulmarg, so ask about the Explorer or Gulmarg Stay. We can add special touches such as candlelit dinners; ask for each as a separate line.
What if I want only four days or can stay a week?
For four days, see our 4-day itinerary, which drops Sonmarg. For a week, see our 7-day itinerary, which adds nights in the hills. We can also lengthen the Classic by a night or two and re-price it for you.
